Keefe Brasselle is newspaper editor who gets an interesting late night phone call. The call is from a cop killer who is on the run. The killer, James Best, says he wants to give himself up, but is afraid the police will kill him on sight. Brasselle agrees to meet with the man later that night. He then phones his police contact, J.C. Flippen, to let him know about the call. Flippen, a detective, tells Brasselle that Best should be left to the police to handle. Best had just gotten out of prison and was a "true killer" according to Flippen. Brasselle digs around and finds Best's mother, Jeanette Nolan. She tells him the same thing. "Don't trust him, he is just plain bad". Brasselle knows a good story when he sees it and decides to meet Best when he calls again. Best soon calls and gives Brasselle the address of an apartment. Brasselle is to meet him there in an hour. The newsman hotfoots it to the address where he finds Best's wife, Virginia Grey. "Who the hell are you and what do you want?" Asks Grey. She turns several shades paler when her husband's name is mentioned. The door bursts open and in pops Best with a rather large automatic in his hand. A couple of swift belts crumple Grey to the floor. Brasselle says "I thought you wanted to give yourself up?" "Only after I kill my wife!" Responds Best. Best is somewhat annoyed with his dear wife. It seems Grey had put the police onto him years earlier. "I did a 7 year bit because of her!" Brasselle jumps Best and several solid punches are needed before Best is subdued. The police are called and Best is sent off for his just deserts.
