Ralph Carmichael, composer and Emmy Award-winning arranger-conductor for Nat King Cole, Jack Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Roger Williams, died Oct. 18 in Camarillo, Calif. He was 94.
Carmichael got his big break when Capitol Records producer Lee Gillette was introduced to his arrangement in the 1950s. This led to the prolific collaboration between Carmichael and Cole, starting with Cole arranging the 1960 Christmas album “The Magic of Christmas” which was re-packaged in 1962 as “The Christmas Song.” Carmichael and Cole produced nine full studio projects together including Nat’s final sessions in 1964 for the album “L.O.V.E,” more collaborations with Nat than any other arranger. He was also a primary arranger/conductor for pianist Roger Williams, creating 20 albums together including the 1965 hit “Born Free.”
Carmichael also wrote charts for TV shows such as “My Mother the Car” and “I Love Lucy” as well as movie scores, including “The Blob,” “4D Man” and “The Cross and the Switchblade.

TV producer and writer Cy Chermak, who produced notable series including “CHiPs,” “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” and “Ironside,” died Friday of natural causes in Oahu, Hawaii. He was 91.
Chermak was born in 1929 in Bayonne, New Jersey as Seymour Albert Chermak. He began his career in Hollywood at the age of 17, going on to become a successful television producer on series like “Conway,” “The Virginian” and “The Bold Ones: The New Doctors.”
Chermak served as an executive producer on the drama series “Ironside” from 1967-1974, where he received three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series. Some of his other producing credits include “Amy Prentiss,” “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” “Barbary Coast” and “Murder at the World Series.” Most notably, he produced 125 episodes of the buddy crime action series “CHiPs,” which starred Robert Pine and Erik Estrada as two motorcycle officers of the California Highway Patrol (Chp).

Topping my most anticipated home entertainment releases of the year were several titles from Kino Films, most making their long-overdue Blu-ray debut and getting dynamite special features. The following all come highly recommended for those who like weird little movies that have fallen through the cracks. 4D Man (1959) won my heart when I was about eight years old and my old Image DVD was pretty barebones. The movie was Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.'s followup to The Blob (1958) and told the story of two brothers, both scientists, who wind up in love with the same woman. The love triangle is complicated by the fact that the screwup younger brother accidentally develops a method for objects to pass through one another. When the older brother...

Were movie folk blind in 1960? We kids were so dino- crazy, Any movie about dinosaurs would have cleaned up at the box office. We’re told that Jack H. Harris didn’t do badly with his third turn at the wickets, despite thunder lizards with a complexion of Jurassic Pla-Doh. The Romper Room dramatics didn’t offend my eight-year-old sensibilities, either. The movie had a caveman for comic relief and a klutzy villain that all but eliminates himself, so kid-safe it is even if people are being devoured alive. And hardly any kissing scenes, Ma.

It was never his intention to be remembered as the Alfred Hitchcock of the Chester-Delaware Counties of Eastern Pennsylvania. Director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. was a devout Christian whose real passion was turning out religious-themed short films that would bring the Gospel to the masses. But such proselytizing was cost prohibitive. So, at the suggestion of - and in partnership with - Philadelphia-based distributor/producer Jack H. Harris, Yeaworth signed on to direct a handful of low-budget teenage dramas and science-fiction films. Harris had convinced Yeaworth that there was a cash-grab market for such indie films, and these productions would bring in enough revenue to fund projects with loftier aspirations.
Yeaworth’s first feature film (as co-producer), The Flaming Teenage (1956), was not really his at all. It was instead a cobble of pre-existing footage from a drug-abuse morality fable now disguised and sold to distributors as an exploitation film.

An old monster formula props up this fantastic film, but at its heart is a brilliant central idea that excites the imagination. Jack H. Harris’s sophomore picture after The Blob is on the awkward side, but the good stuff is much better than we expect it to be. Ambitious performances by Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether and James Congdon come through with something unique, with graces we just don’t find in independent Sci-Fi from the late 1950s. And the new Blu-ray rejuvenates the film’s special effects — all it took was a good 4K restoration.

What if you were taxed with the task of filming every moment of your life? Even weirder... what if your life took an unexpected turn toward evil? Would you still film everything? The folks behind Hungerford obviously will.
Hungerford is directed by Drew Casson from a script he wrote with Jesse Cleverly. Drew Casson, Tom Scarlett, Sam Carter, Georgia Bradley, and Kitty Speed star.
Synopsis
Cowen Rosewell lives with a small group of old friends in a scruffy flat in a small English town. Like many teens leaving school in 2014, there are few prospects or opportunities for people like Cowen, and he has enrolled on a Btec media course as a way of passing the time. His first assignment is to record everything in a week of his life.
At first Cowen dismisses the random acts of violence he witnesses as the business as usual in a small English town.

Chicago – I wish I loved Fede Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” remake. Don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot to like here — mostly thanks to the committed performance from the talented Jane Levy and the director and producer’s refusal to cave to CGI, doing all their notable effects practically. There’s also a crap script, filled with bad dialogue performed by a weak supporting cast. When the movie focuses on the pure chaos that clearly inspires Alvarez and his team, it works. And it works even more in HD.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The Blu-ray for “Evil Dead” is nice but feels like a placeholder for an inevitable special edition (probably unrated) that will hit stores in time for the in-production sequel. I’m more excited for that sequel as I feel Alvarez will be allowed to play further afield from what fans have come to expect from an “Evil Dead...

We sat down with director Fede Alvarez at the Movies on Demand Lounge at the Hard Rock during the San Diego Comic-Con to get you cats the scoop on the film's inevitable sequel and more. Read on for details and info.
First on our agenda we wanted to know the scoop on if and when there will be an extended cut of the film released as an alternate extended version was referenced in the Blu-ray commentary several times. "People are always asking me about the director's cut of the film," Alvarez tells us. "Honestly though, the version out right now Is the director's cut. I feel it is the best cut of the movie and it's also my favorite. We really didn't cut much as the MPAA had us make only minimal trims, like when Jane cut her tongue in half, we could only show that for two seconds instead of three.

With his version of Evil Dead finally available on Blu-ray and DVD, director Fede Alvarez has been a bit more chatty regarding its sequel, whether it be Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness 2. Check it out!
Collider caught up with Alvarez. who had the following to say about what's next:
"We’re discussing. We’re still talking with Sam [Raimi] about it and trying to figure out what we should do.Maybe because I’m a child of the 80′s, but for me a sequel is a story that follows the previous one, and sometimes if you haven’t seen the original, then you don’t understand the second one. So that’s kind of my ideal sequel – a movie that continues the story, takes one character and moves on, and moves forward with that character that survived with the first one.”
Given that we adored Jane Levy, yes, bring more on with her!

With the release of Evil Dead on Blu-ray and DVD looming we got a chance to catch up with franchise icon Bruce Campbell who spoke about the home video release as well as potential sequels to the remake. Read on for the whole enchilada straight from the chin himself!
J. Blake: I’m curious to know what you think a young Bruce Campbell, circa 1978/79, would’ve thought if he was told that 35 years later he’d be producing a remake of Evil Dead and Sam (Raimi) would be directing an epic prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
Bruce Campbell: I think that guy would say, “Fuckin’ eh!” (we laugh) It was our first movie. It took us four years to finish it and it didn’t take off right away. So we didn’t know if this was a one shot deal. You know making a movie; if...

Evil Dead, the remake of Sam Raimi’s classic horror film, did quite well for itself when it was released back in April. Finding success with critics, fans and at the box office, director Fede Alvarez proved his talents and showed us that horror remakes can indeed be worth watching.

Mumbai, April 20: TV actress Riddhi Dogra, who essays the title role in "Savitri", hopes the fantasy adventure stories in the TV show, make their way to become bedtime stories for children someday.
"Our story is such that we can show fantasy and actually tell stories to the audience. Maybe if our show becomes a hit and people love it, they will tell our stories to their kids during their bedtime," Riddhi said here on the sets of the show.
"Savitri" is a supernatural thriller which talks about the love of Savitri and Satyavan. The evil force Rahu Kaal stands as a hurdle in their love story and Savitri has to now fight him to get back.

The evil force that is Silas has already appeared on The Vampire Diaries, but fans have yet to see the warlock’s true face. That, my friends, is about to change. He can take any form, but his true form will be brought to life by actor Scott Parks.
Today’s casting news came from EW. I, personally, would never hope to meet Silas face to face, but I suppose for our favorite characters, such a thing was inevitable.
The CW picked Parks to play Silas. The actor’s most recent TV role was on the acclaimed Showtime series, Homeland, where he played an agent. Remember that in the March 21 episode of Vampire Diaries, titled “Because the Night,” Damon whisked Elena away for some R&R in New York City. This followed even more bad behavior in the “Bring It On” episode, in which our girl threw a crazy party...

Christmas at Briarcliff was definitely an "Unholy Night" thanks to the evil-possessed soul of Sister Mary Eunice.
Instead of focusing on the scary, the story has shifted into a battle between good and evil with the sides becoming more clearly developed. Sister Mary Eunice versus Sister Jude. And, Dr. Thredson/Bloody Face versus Lana and Kit. Which side will the aliens end up on?
The evil force within Sister Mary Eunice is no longer operating in the shadows of Briarcliff, she is now acting out in the open and has gained Dr. Arden as an ally of sorts. When he went to see Sister Jude and sought her assistance to free the innocent Sister Mary Eunice, I bought into his changed man act. He had always been drawn to the young nun's pure and innocent soul and repudiated the new evil, ruby-loving nun.
What a shock to find out he...

After venturing into Stephen King's nightmares for the adaptation of 1408, John Cusack is heading to the horror genre with the Master of Terror again as Screen Daily has learned that he will star in an adaptation of Cell, the best-selling novel about a father desperately trying to find his wife and son after some sort of catastrophe begins spreading via cellular telephones. In this day and age of cell phones being in everyone's possession nearly every minute of everyday, this could be quite the thriller. King also co-write the screenplay himself with The Last House on the Left wrter Adam Alleca, but no director is attached just yet. In addition, a press release from Synchronicity Entertainment has Cusack attached to Due Process, a new thriller from One Perfect Day director Paul Currie. The film is slated to begin shooting in January and follows two big city bankers who head...
