En este filme el renombrado director utiliza algunos elementos fantasiosos, de los cuales se vale para transmitir sus más oscuras obsesiones. Está presente la narración engañosa y perspicaz que genera la falsa sensación de tener todo comprendido e indudablemente que apenas nos imaginamos los conceptos que hay de fondo. Estos mismos giran alrededor del romance, la intriga, la fatídica muerte, la decepción, el engaño, la presentación de una imagen de la realidad distorsionada y el infaltable crimen. Esta obra fue considerada por muchos como la obra maestra del director, pero sin embargo muchos la ignoraron por completo por tener demasiados elementos vinculados a la fantasía. En mi caso particular me ubicaría en un término medio entre estas dos posturas, por encontrarla atractiva la primera hora del filme desde la propuesta en sí, intrigante sería la palabra adecuada como para definir el comienzo y gran parte del desarrollo del filme, no obstante estoy convencido que luego la magia y el misterio decae. Quien sabe por qué motivos Hitchcock transforma su filme en una suerte de monótona redundancia de recursos que hacen que le sobren minutos según mi punto de vista.
La narración aborda temáticas diversas y que a simple vista nada tienen que ver: la acrofobia, el crimen y la obsesión. Sobre estos tres pilares se construye y se sostiene la trama de la película.
Hay que reconocerle a la cinta su enigmática presentación que al menos nos mantiene atentos sobre los posibles desenlaces que se pueden dar. Desde este aspecto los detalles están muy bien cuidados, tanto la narración muy elaborada por el director donde cada aspecto está muy bien pensado y adquiere vital sentido, algunos toques visuales sorprendentes para la época de realización, la compleja trama que va cargándose de emotividad con altibajos pero que en ningún momento se torna aburrida, la excepcional actuación de James Stewart quien logra un papel sumamente convincente que le valiera ganar la Zulueta Prize en el "San Sebastián International Film Festival" de 1958 en la categoría "mejor actor".
Uno haciendo investigaciones toma datos relevantes acerca que mucho de lo que se narra en este filme viene de la mano de la propia vida del director, de sus pensamientos y sentimientos más caros. Y como vemos, dentro del filme hay una temática primordial que es la fijación ya a extremos obsesivos sobre el amor hacia una mujer, combinada con lo morbosidad que aporta la idea de la muerte siempre vigente en las obras del director. Otros estudios admiten que este filme es una suerte de relato autobiográfico del director por su frustrado amor con Grace Kelly, actriz que ha dirigido en varios filmes. Por ello podríamos considerar como que esta obra es una alternativa que Hitchcock utilizó para canalizar la angustia de no ser correspondido en sus sentimientos.
