Decent Spanish/USA co-production about Christ Passion with acceptable production design and spectacular scenarios
ma-cortes7 February 2022
Nice version of the extraordinary , sad and bloody Christ Passion The film centers about the Passion of Christ for the previous days that changed the world until his resurrection . The movie, behind the greatest event in the history of the world. Dealing with one man who changed the world forever . It begins with Jesus Christ along with his disciples (Antonio Vilar as Peter , Antonio Casas , Manuel Monroy, José Marco Davó) . Later on , in the garden of Getsemani where he's betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Manuel Monroy) in exchange of thirty coins . Continuing his arrest and trial . He's led to governor Poncio Pilatos (Antonio Vilar) , but he washes his hand s. Jesus Christ is condemned to die . Then the suffering goes on : knocks, punches , lashes, the blood drills along his skin. The experience of Christ suffering is overblown . He must carry the cross over his shoulders , when Veronica appears with her famous veil , likewise he's helped by Simon of Cyrene to transport the cross . He's crucified in the Golgota hill along with two thieves and there suffers new tortures, but water is given by a good legionnaire (Manuel Zarzo) . By his wounds, we were healed and Jesus gave his life for us .

The picture is very well played by great Spanish actors such as : Antonio Vilar in double role as Pontius Pilate /Saint Peter , Maruchi Fresno as Virgin Mary , Manuel Zarzo as a legionnarie , Carlos Casaravilla as Herodes , Antonio Casas , José Marco Davó , Xan das Bolas, Felix De Pomes , Angel Ter , Jacinto San Emeterio , Luchy Soto , Virgilio Teixeira , among others .This ¨The redeeemer¨ or ¨El redentor¨(1959) depicts the same holy events as ¨The Passion of The Christ¨(2004) by Mel Gibson with Jamez Cazievel . Viewers expecting to see Jesús in this epic will be disapappointed , as he never appears on the screen , (similar to Mohammed in The Message 1976) , as his face is never seen , he is only seen from behind . It packs a colorful and evocative cinematography by Edwin B. DuPar , though a perfect rematering being really necessary , as well as adequate set and art design by Enrique Alarcón , being shot in Madrid , surroundings and Sevilla studios . The movie was decently diected by Joseph Breen and Fernando Palacios . Rating : 7/10 . Well worth watching . Essential and indispensable seeing for religious cinema fans .

Jesus life has been adapted several times , such as : ¨King of Kings¨ (released in 1927) , it is the yardstick by which all Jesus movies are to be measure , being first silent version by Cecil B. DeMille with H. B. Wagner Christ . Other pictures dealing with his divine presence are the following ones :¨King of Kings¨(1961) by Nicholas Ray with Jeffrey Hunter , Robert Ryan , Ron Randel , Hurd Hatfield , Rip Torn , Frank Thring , Carmen Sevilla ; ¨The Greatest Story Ever Told¨(1965) by George Stevens with Max Von Sidow , Michael Anderson Jr , Carroll Baker, Ina Balin, Pat Boone, Jose Ferrer , Angela Lansbury , Victor Buono, Richard Conte ; ¨Gospel according to Matthew¨ by Pier Paolo Pasolini with Enrique Irazoqui as Jesus ; ¨Jesus Christ Superstar¨(1977) by Norman Jewison with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson ; ¨Jesus de Nazareth¨(1977) by Franco Zeffirelli with Robert Powell , Olivia Hussey , James Mason , Laurence Olivier , Anne Brancfort , Fernando Rey ; ¨Jesus¨ (1976) by Peter Sykes , John Krish with Brian Deacon ; ¨Last temptation of Christ¨ by Martin Scorsese with Willem Dafoe , David Bowie , Harvey Keitel , Ian Holm , Harry Dean Staton , among others .

This is one of the largest and better versions done already about the Life, the Passion, the Death, Resurrection and the Ascension of Ours Mr. Jesus Christ!!!

I live here in Brazil, I am now 32 years of age old and I remember that I attended this version that was exhibited in extinct TV Tupi in the Week Saint 1980, when I was with about 8 for 9 years of age. And from, then this version never again of my head, and I only attended her again when 17 years later in 1997. This film follows the Gospel faithfully, everything this perfect one in him!!! The actors' characterizations and of the figurants, the sceneries that you/they reproduce the houses, the streets, the palaces are excellent. A true super-production. A grandiose one epic biblical. All the actors' speeches, the scenes, follow the text of the four Gospel faithfully.

Jesus Christ (that is interpreted by Luis Álvarez), unlike the other versions ("King of Kings" with Jeffrey Hunter, "Jesus of Nazareth" of Franco Zeffirelli, with Robert Powell, for instance) he never has his face shown in scene. He is just shown of backs, giving prominence to the long brown hair. But nor for this detail this film loses his beauty. Luis Álvarez is great in Jesus' paper, and also all the rest of the cast. The fact of Jesus' face not to be shown in any scene it is so that the person to who is attending east films, imagine inside of itself which would be the true of the Master!!! This film is beautiful, wonderful!!!! It is worthwhile to attend!!! This is without a doubt, in my opinion, one of the largest and better versions already done on the birth, the passion, crucifixion, death, resurrection and ascension of Ours Mr. Jesus Christ, except the largest and the best of all!!!

the honesty
Kirpianuscus26 April 2020
The detail who defines this version of life - in its last part - and the sacrifice of the Savior is its high honesty to the public. From the first scenes to clothes and atmosphere, small details, dialogues and tension. The face of Christ remains obscure for the viewer. But this is one of the most beautiful things because each of us knows the Lord out of images proposed by cinema, and, in this case, the voice is enough for remind, discover , again, His words, His advices, His powerful answers to the provocative or innocent questions. Few scenes are real splendid. The film is faithful to the Gospels testimony. The performances are more than decent and, in many scenes , you feel the story in special way, more than you know. It is not the greatest and , obvious, it has not this ambition. But its clear and precise honesty to be a coherent and fair testimony about the Messiah is the basic virtue. And it is the admirable thing that !
