The role of Virgil Renchler was originally supposed to be played by Robert Middleton. The William Morris Agency instead suggested Orson Welles, who badly needed money to pay income taxes he owned to the Internal Revenue Service.
Orson Welles offered script re-writes to producer Albert Zugsmith. Together the two of them would retire to Zugsmith's bungalow at the end of each day's shooting to make the necessary script changes for upcoming scenes. The collaboration was a good one.
Very hairy-chested Jeff Chandler once again had to subject to a torso waxing for the brief scenes in which his chest is exposed while being patched up by the local physician.
Although Orson Welles' character claims that his ranch is bigger than five European countries, producer Albert Zugsmith's low budget didn't allow for a single cow to be shown.
