Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's fierce, real-life chemistry fueled their roles as the bickering but loving couple on their trailblazing sitcom "I Love Lucy." No matter how aggravating Lucy's goofy schemes became, at the end of the day Ricky always forgave her and couldn't help but be charmed by her wild antics. But behind the scenes, Lucy and Desi's actual marriage was far from the cookie-cutter image they presented in their beloved television series.
There was a tension between Lucy and Desi that would impact the "I Love Lucy" production even from the very start. Amy Poehler's fantastic documentary "Lucy and Desi," assembles private audio tapes recorded by the couple with home movies and photographs, giving a unique insight into their own personal thoughts and feelings — especially regarding the fractured state of their marriage and how working on "I Love Lucy" exacerbated many of their pre-existing conflicts. One of the earliest success stories in the history of TV is “I Love Lucy,” which enjoyed six seasons atop the ratings. When the cast was ready to slow down a bit, audiences weren’t ready to see their favorite zany redhead leave altogether, so the 30-minute sitcom was retooled as 13 one-hour specials broadcast sporadically over three seasons, under a new name: “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
In the 70 years since, many TV shows have seen name changes before airing their first episodes. One of the most notorious is ABC’s attempt to soften the title of “You Can’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” which was shortened to the less-offensive “Apartment 23.” However, apparently that wasn’t quite as catchy, so they compromised with “You Can’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” ahead of its April 2012 premiere.

Only a few series have changed titles midstream, as this can be confusing for viewers.

History repeated itself last week when actors went on strike at the same time as writers, who have been picketing for more than two months. This is only the second time in the history of the industry that both guilds have halted work simultaneously, with advancements in technology at the root of their cause, and it’s been 63 year since that event shook Hollywood. Today, writers and performers are fighting for their fair share of residuals in a world that has now largely turned to streaming services, and to protect their work from being taken over by AI, whereas in 1960, they were fighting for residuals from reruns and theatrical films being shown on a relatively new medium — television. Let’s turn back time and flashback to life during that history-making time of the 1960 strikes.
The WGA began their strike on January 16, 1960, followed by the actors strike on March 7. Future United...

In 1952, the second season of CBS sitcom I Love Lucy set viewing records that, 70 years later, have yet to be beaten. The star was Lucille Ball, a lovable klutz from New York, and her husband Ricky was played by her real-life spouse—Cuban refugee Desi Arnaz. Together they founded Desilu Productions, soon to be the No. 1 independent TV company in America. In 1957, however, a scandal surfaced that threatened to tear it all down: Lucy was a registered Communist. Or was she? That fraught time is brought to life by Aaron Sorkin in his Amazon Studios release Being the Ricardos, starring Nicole Kidman as Lucy and Javier Bardem as Desi. Damon Wise sits down with all three to discuss the forgotten legacy of a most unlikely power couple.

“I Love Lucy” writers Madelyn Pugh Davis and Bob Carroll Jr. thought the seminal CBS comedy series starring Lucille Ball, her husband Desi Arnaz, William Frawley and Vivian Vance would last three months. When I chatted with the duo, who wrote 181 episodes of the classic, in 2001 for the L.A. Times, Davis recalled watching the premiere Oct. 15, 1951 at the home of series director Marc Daniels. “Emily, his wife, was the camera coordinator. She was a good cook. She had dinner and watched the show.” Ball, Davis noted, “was terribly funny and wonderful. We had hopes for the show. We hoped it would be on for 13 weeks.
How about 71 years and counting?
The series ended in 1957 never below No. 3 in the ratings. It was followed by “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” specials from 1957-60, “I Love Lucy” continued in reruns on CBS on primetime for two more years and ran on the...

Like everyone else, we love Lucy and celebrate the anniversary of Lucille Ball‘s landmark laffer “I Love Lucy,” which debuted on CBS exactly 70 years ago today on Oct. 15, 1951. The show won the Emmy for Best Situation Comedy twice and Ball claimed two trophies as well.
Ball went on to win two more Emmys for the last two seasons of her second series, “The Lucy Show”. In 1967, she edged out “Bewitched” stars Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead and “That Girl’s” Marlo Thomas. By the way, Montgomery never won an Emmy, despite nine nods, including five for her work as that witch with a twitch. The following year, in what was to be her final Emmy race, Ball prevailed yet again. Her competition: Montgomery and Thomas, as well as Barbara Feldon (“Get Smart”) and Paula Prentiss (“He and She”).

Last year’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (affectionately known as the Pandemmys because it took place during the Covid-19 pandemic), rewarded a total of 23 contenders with trophies. Shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Succession” and actors like Billy Crudup and Zendaya all claimed victory from the safety of their own homes. But of those 23 winners, shockingly only two are eligible to repeat at the 2021 Emmys: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for Best Competition Program and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” for Best Variety Talk Series. And they’ll both probably win again.
So, what gives? Why are there so many ineligible shows this time around? It’s a mixture of some programs having ended last year and the coronavirus pandemic halting production on others. “Schitt’s Creek” accounted for all seven of the primetime comedy categories, so that means all of those are up for grabs this year. You can already hear the...

“Mank,” “Tenet,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “Soul” have won the feature-film awards at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, which were handed out in a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
“Mank” won in the period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Production Design. “Tenet” won in the fantasy category, “Da 5 Bloods” in the contemporary category and “Soul” in the animated category.
In the 14 years since the current Adg categories were established, the winner in the period category has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Production Design six times, the fantasy winner has taken the Oscar four times, and the contemporary winner has won the Oscar once. In all but three of those years, the Oscar has gone to one of the Adg winners.
“Mank” and “Tenet” are both nominated for the Best Production Design Oscar; “Da 5 Bloods” and “Soul” are not.

If you ask James Burrows why he chose to direct all 246 episodes of NBC’s “Will and Grace,” the 10-time Emmy-winning director has a very simple answer: “It made me laugh, really hard!” The legendary director and member of the TV Academy Hall of Fame has credits including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Taxi,” “Cheers” and “Friends.” This year, Burrows earned his 43rd career Emmy nomination for directing “We Love Lucy,” the NBC sitcom’s tribute to the classic Lucille Ball show. The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 185 episodes (from 104 series), so there will seven nominees under the new rules. The six nominees last year were:
“Barry” season 2: “The Audition” (Alec Berg) “Barry” season 2: “ronny/lily” (Bill Hader) “The Big Bang Theory” season 12: “The Stockholm Syndrome” (Mark Cendrowski) Winner — “Fleabag” season 1: “Episode 1” (Harry Bradbeer) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” season 2: “All Alone” (Amy Sherman-Palladino) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” season 2: “We’re Going to the Catskills!” (Daniel Palladino)
Only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is back in contention. It won two years ago over “Silicon Valley,” which was nominated for its fifth (consecutive) season. If only one good thing came from being quarantined for months, it’s Leslie Jordan. This Tennessee native spent much of his time at home entertaining the masses with his hilarious and always-viral Instagram account, which is nearing a gobsmacking five million followers. Jordan’s newfound popularity could end up having another unintended consequence as well … at the 2020 Emmys. He already has one Emmy Award on his mantel as Best Comedy Guest Actor for “Will & Grace” in 2006, but he could now win a bookend trophy for returning to play Beverley Leslie one last time in the final season.
Jordan popped up in April’s “We Love Lucy” episode that paid tribute to the iconic sitcom “I Love Lucy.” In his single scene, Jordan played opposite Megan Mullally‘s Karen, Beverley’s longtime rival, as they recreated the classic grape-stomping scene together (watch below). Before long, the stomping turned to...

With only three episodes left until Will & Grace bows out for a second time, the NBC revival on Thursday paid tribute to another iconic comedy when it transported its foursome to re-created sets from I Love Lucy.
In the episode, titled "We Love Lucy," Grace (Debra Messing), Karen (Megan Mullally) and Jack (Sean Hayes) each claim that they could best portray Lucille Ball's Lucy Ricardo, and they ask Will (Eric McCormack) — who plays Desi Arnaz's Ricky Ricardo in all the reimagined scenes — to be the judge.

“I Love Lucy” is the subject of a heartfelt tribute from “Will & Grace” on April 9. In “We Love Lucy,” Grace (Debra Messing), Jack (Sean Hayes) and Karen (Megan Mullally) each imagine themselves as Lucy Ricardo opposite Will (Eric McCormack) as her hubby Ricky. Part of the fun is seeing this trio of talent also play Fred and Ethel in various combinations.
“Will & Grace” and “I Love Lucy” both won Best Comedy Series at the Emmys. The former did it in 2000; Hayes and Mullally won that year as well. McCormack prevailed in 2001 and Messing in 2003. “Will and Grace” is only the third TV series in Emmy history in which all four of the main cast won awards, following “All in the Family” and “The Golden Girls.”
Of the quartet of talent on “I Love Lucy,” it was only the women — Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance — who won over the TV academy voters.

Lucille Ball: The glamour look. Cate Blanchett to play Lucille Ball: Actress won Oscar for incarnating Ball's fellow Rko contract player Katharine Hepburn Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is reportedly slated to star in a biopic of former Rko and MGM actress and big-time television comedienne Lucille Ball. Aaron Sorkin, Oscar winner for David Fincher's The Social Network, will be responsible for the screenplay. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Lucille Ball film biopic will focus on Ball's two-decade marriage to her I Love Lucy costar Desi Arnaz. In 1960, the couple had an acrimonious divorce that supposedly “shocked” clueless fans unable to tell the difference between TV reality and real-life reality. Their children, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Lucie Arnaz, had modest acting careers in film and on TV in the '70s and '80s. As per the EW.com report, they're both producing the planned Lucille Ball biopic.

Here’s an enticing prospect: Cate Blanchett starring as Lucille Ball? It could happen, as production company Escape Artists is looking to put together a biopic package that includes Blanchett starring as the entertainment icon and a script that has Aaron Sorkin’s brand of wordplay. The Hollywood Reporter’s story mentions that Sorkin hasn’t definitely signed on yet, but Ball’s story is surely a tempting draw for the writer, particularly since he could use an outlet to demonstrate he can write great female characters after criticisms on projects such as The Social Network and The Newsroom. The actress and producer was a driving force alongside then husband Desi Arnaz for shows such as I Love Lucy, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy and Life With Lucy. Before her TV stardom, she worked extensively in film and is still regarded as a comedy legend.

Read More: 2015 Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Series Ever since Lucille Ball thrust her first name into iconic status on "I Love Lucy" (and later basically had it trademarked via "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour," "The Lucy Show," "Here's Lucy" and "Life With Lucy"), actors have used their public image to earn laughs on TV. Sometimes they create a whole new persona to go along with the character they play (who just so happens to share their name). Other times they glean jokes from real-life events, using the audience's knowledge of their actual actions to poke fun at themselves "in character." The concept is even older than that of the mockumentary, a parody of documentaries made popular in the '80s in films like "This Is Spinal Tap," "Zelig" and, later, "Man Bites Dog." Both genres have gone through a revitalization period during the so-called golden age of television. Mockumentaries were...

Resembling the spawn of Han Solo's carbon shell and a child's drawing of Tilda Swinton, a hideous statue of I Love Lucy's Lucille Ball has been the bane of the town of Celoron, New York, for the past six years.Erected in 2009 to (in theory) honor the woman who transformed television in the 1950s by stealing it from the clutches of New York intellectuals and delivering it to Hollywood, the off-brown sculpture has been met with understandable horror by pretty much everyone. According to the Post-Journal, Celoron's mayor wants to replace the statue's monstrous head, which would cost around $10,000. However, it seems that simply decapitating Lucy and installing a new dome won't satisfy the community, which is demanding an entirely new monument with a well-named Facebook group called "We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue." Keep fighting the good fight, guys.

Comedienne Lucille Ball was a trailblazer in the world of television and comedy, treading a path for generations of women in the entertainment industry to follow. Saturday (Aug. 6) marks what would have been her 100th birthday and to celebrate, Life has released a series of never-before-published photos of Lucy.
The above photo is captioned: In 1958, on the set of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour -- a collection of occasional lavish specials that followed the adventures of the Ricardos and the Mertzes after I Love Lucy -- Ball does a comedy bit as a wisecracking clerk. As in real life, the fictional Lucy seemed to have tried every job in the want ads in the hope of eventually becoming famous and successful. Watching her fail spectacularly every week (even as the actress who played her showed off her unparalleled comic skills) made Lucy Ricardo a success -- at becoming one of TV's most unforgettable characters.

I Love Lucy is one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. Thanks to Desi Arnaz, the show was shot on film and the episodes look much better than other black and white shows from that era. But, have you ever wished that you could see Lucy and Ricky in color?
I Love Lucy follows Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ricky (Desi Arnaz) Ricardo. They're a middle-class couple who live in an NYC apartment, owned by friends Fred (William Frawley) and Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance). Ricky's a bandleader at a local nightclub and Lucy will do anything to get into show business. Eventually, Lucy gives birth to a son, little Ricky (Richard Keith).
The series ran for six seasons on CBS. Despite still being a top-rated show, Arnaz and Ball tired of the weekly grind. All of the characters transitioned to The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour which ran for three seasons as hour-long specials.
