Bravo New World: Seidl Returns with Desolate Portrait of Fallen Hustler
There’s always a healthy thread of humor lurking under the despair of Ulrich Seidl’s films, both documentary and otherwise, and this is most certainly the case in his long awaited return to narrative filmmaking with Rimini, a cross-cultural portrait of a hustler hit with a karma bullet. It’s been nearly a decade since Seidl unleashed his perversely enjoyable Paradise trilogy, though his documentary features have continued to unspool, as with the surprisingly sweet In the Basement (2014) and the disturbing Safari (2016). The groundwork of his latest feature is basically the story of a failed playboy gone to seed reuniting with his daughter, though undercurrents of cultural trauma bubble up sporadically.…...

San Francisco, Aug 11 (Ians) Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is capable of tracking its users’ actions, text choices and even text input, such as passwords and confidential credit card information, if they visit a link inside the app, says a new report.
The analysis conducted by Felix Krause found that both Instagram and Facebook on iOS use their own in-app browser rather than the one offered by Apple for third-party apps.
Most apps use Apple’s Safari for loading websites, but Instagram and Facebook have been using their own in-app browser to load websites within the app, reports MacRumors.
With their custom-built browser, still based on WebKit, Instagram and Facebook inject a tracking JavaScript code-named “Meta Pixel” into all links and websites shown. With that code, Meta has total freedom to track users’ interactions without their explicit consent, Krause found.
This allows Instagram to monitor everything happening on external websites without the user’s consent,...

San Francisco, Feb 1 (Ians) Apple has released a Chrome extension for Windows users, called iCloud Passwords, that allows them to use the same strong Safari passwords they create on iPhones, iPads or Macs when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC.
For those who uses Chrome as their browser and iCloud Keychain instead of a dedicated password manager, this could ease their life between Windows and Mac computers.
"iCloud Passwords allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your Apple device, with Chrome on Windows," Apple said in an updade.
The new extension is now available in the Chrome Web Store.
The passwords created in Chrome for Windows will sync back to iCloud so they'll be available on Apple devices as well.
"iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that it is also available on your Apple devices,...

It’s 007 in the saddle! Sean Connery didn’t become a career cowboy but his one stint as a Louis L’Amour hero is a diverting change of pace. And we couldn’t resist the pairing of two of moviedom’s most attractive actors — Connery and Brigitte Bardot.

As James Bond prepares for his 23rd official outing in Skyfall and to mark next year’s 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time I have been tasked to take a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic fictional characters in film history.
Back in 1961 nobody could have foreseen the success and longevity that James Bond would go on to enjoy in the years that followed. At the time, film producer Albert R. Broccoli, who was reeling from being declared bankrupt after the box-office failure of his most recent picture The Trails of Oscar Wilde, was on the lookout for an idea for his next project. When asked by his wife Dana what he really wanted to do, he replied “I have always wanted to film the Ian Fleming James Bond...

Alexa here dropping in from Pop Elegantiarum again. I recently found this great publicity photo of Janet Leigh in a thrift store. Apparently the film it was shot for, Safari, was a bit of a dud, but I had to have it. I mean, check out those legs, so famously shot by Orson Welles in Touch of Evil! Then I was up all night the other night and I caught John Carpenter's The Fog, and while it was the perfect thing to watch at 3 a.m., I realized that this woman's career ran the gamut from classic to crap. I started wondering what my favorite Janet Leigh performance might be. While not the best of films, I think Holiday Affair might top my list because of the thick sexual tension between her an Robert Mitchum, plopped in the middle a saintly Christmas story. What are your favorites?...
