Serviceable Musical Melodrama From Veteran German Master
lchadbou-326-2659215 October 2018
Rosen fuer Bettina is a disappointment for those expecting something on the level of classic Pabst, but the somewhat predictable romantic triangle set in the world of ballet features lengthy segments of music on stage which should please fans of dance and classical music. From a Cinematic point of view, the film is of interest also for the way the director and his cameraman set up a number of scenes in long shot with the characters seen in perspective, instead of the typical close shots and cross cutting.Pabst uses a similar technique of staging in depth in several scenes of his earlier It Happened on July 2oth.
