- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: His only fault is going too far. But his anxiety about the bomb is something we all share. Mr. Araki, Mr. Hori, Miss Tamiya -- you all know the feeling. Isn't that true? We just don't feel it quite as strongly. We don't build underground shelters or plan to move to Brazil. But can we claim that the feeling is beyond comprehension? The Japanese all share it, to greater or lesser degrees. We can't dispense with it so easily by just saying he went too far.
- Kiichi Nakajima: Please, I beg of you. Go to Brazil, I beg of you. All of you, as one family. You say I'm deluded. Maybe I am. But H-bombs really exist. War can break out any time. If it does, it will be too late; you can go nowhere then. We can still make it, let's flee why we can.
- [He points to the baby]
- Kiichi Nakajima: I must spare him. I can't let an H-bomb get him.
- [He starts sniffling]
- Kiichi Nakajima: I gave up hope once. I thought I wouldn't care about you. If I could save this baby at least, that's what I thought. But all of you are my flesh and blood. I can't leave you here! Please come with me!
- [He gets out a letter]
- Kiichi Nakajima: Look, he's written from Brazil. He kindly writes to me, "Come at once. I'll arrange your citizenship. Come to me, and leave this hell. Everything will be fine." Even a stranger is kind to us. I beseech you, come with me to Brazil. Please, I beg of you, on my hands and knees!
- Toyo Nakajima: Please go with him. Father is begging you.
- [She starts crying]
- Toyo Nakajima: I'm begging you, too. Please go with him. You know, he's always been right. Father's always been a good planner, planning for all of you. Let's go, Ichiro. Jiro, let's go. Let's go, Yoshiko. Say something! Why are you so silent?
- [Kiichi starts to get up. Sue stands up suddenly and clings to her father]
- Sue Nakajima: I'll go with you, Father!
- [She sobs into Kiichi's clothes. Kiichi collapses. Sue kneels down and shakes him]
- Sue Nakajima: Father! Father! Father! Father! Father!
- Kiichi Nakajima: I'm very glad you came. You're safe here. Have no fear. By the way, what happened to the Earth? Are many people still left behind there? Are there still many people there? That's not good. Not good at all. They better escape soon or they'll be sorry! Why don't they understand? They better hurry and come to this planet! They better hurry!
- [seeing the sun from his window]
- Kiichi Nakajima: Is it burning? Oh! The Earth is burning! Oh, the Earth is burning! Oh, it's burning! It's burning! Oh! Oh! Oh! It's burning. The Earth has finally gone up in flames. Oh! Oh!
- Jiro Nakajima: [to Kiichi] You see, I obtained a Court Order forbidding disposal of our assets. Until the case is decided, we can't spend a yen. Yet you did this. And what you did was illegal. Your objection will be overruled.
- Toyo Nakajima: But Father brought back the money.
- Jiro Nakajima: Don't accept it.
- [Sue throws a paper at Jiro. Jiro throws the paper back. Kiichi gets up and beats Jiro]
- Jiro Nakajima: Wait! Wait, Father!
- Sue Nakajima: Good old Father. In only two days.
- [Jiro beats Sue and chases her around the courtyard]
- Jiro Nakajima: My father's scheme is simply a castle in the air. He wants to buy a farm there, but he has no dollars at all. Emigration is being encouraged if it is constructive, but he's running away from Japan because he is afraid. Will he get any dollars? No. I went to the Finance Ministry and verified it. In short, this plan is bound to end up like his underground house.
- Asako Kuribayashi: What's wrong?
- Kiichi Nakajima: I sent him to cash a promissory note for 200,000 yen.
- Asako Kuribayashi: That's like trusting a cat with milk.
- Kiichi Nakajima: I must tell you one thing, you and the others who ruled against me. I told you then I wasn't afraid of the bomb. But just look at me now! Can't you see? I'm out of my mind with fear! And it's you who made me like this! Thanks to you, there's nothing I can do. Nothing! I keep thinking about the H-bomb, but all I can do is think! And the more I think, the more restless I become. But there's nothing I can do! It's a living hell!
- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: What do you think about the A-bomb and the H-bomb?
- Susumu: What's that about?
- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: Never mind that. What do you think? Are you afraid?
- Susumu: Of course I am.
- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: You're really afraid?
- Susumu: Yes, really. Everyone's afraid of them.
- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: Then how can you be so calm?
- Susumu: Well, because, there's nothing we can do, is there?
- Domestic Court Counselor Dr. Harada: We can't look at him and remain unmoved. That's because his fear of the bomb is palpable and real in a way that neither we nor his family can grasp. But why does he feel it so strongly? What triggered it?
- Toyo Nakajima: We had such a lovely time that day. It was really wonderful. But you know, it was so much fun that I knew some misfortune would come along. I was so afraid, and I was right.
- Mr. Kuribayashi father: This spooky weather doesn't let up, does it? The newspapers say it's from an H-bomb test. You probably know better than anyone, but they say that even if a bomb is dropped on China, or America, or Russia, the fallout will eventually drift over Japan. I don't really understand it. Something to do with atmospheric currents. Japan's a sort of valley that all radioactivity flows into. But what about those of us living in that valley? What will happen to us? First our hair will fall out. In the end our bones will crumble and rot.
- [chuckles]
- Mr. Kuribayashi father: Not something to look forward to, eh?
- Psychologist: Whenever I see this patient, I become terribly depressed. This is the first time that's happened to me. Of course the insane are depressing to be around. That said, whenever I see him, I somehow feel - oddly anxious, even though I'm the one who's supposed to be sane. Is he crazy? Or, are we, who can remain unperturbed in an insane world, the crazy ones?
