Plot: An exiled anxiety-ridden homebody must battle an alien who’s found its way into her home.
Review: If there’s any subgenre that desperately needs a resurgence, it’s the alien invasion film. Vampires and Zombies got their time and we desperately need Aliens to get theirs. I mean, heck, have you seen the news lately? So if anything, No One Will Save You feels very timely. Hell, just two weeks before release, the Mexican government practically put out a promotional video for the film. So in a world where actors can’t promote their movies, it feels oddly kismet. But if you’re expecting anything more than cool alien designs and a great Kaitlyn Dever performance, then you may be disappointed.
No One Will Save You follows Brynn (Dever) as she navigates her life as a homebody. She seems to have a ton of social anxiety. There’s...

‘The Madigan Chronicles’ Optioned By Particle6
Mystical book series The Madigan Chronicles is to be turned into a TV series by UK indie Particle6 Productions. Particle6 has acquired the rights to Marieke Lexmond’s six-book series, which includes the likes of The Dagger, The Magical Tarot Deck and The Wand. The books tell the story of three generations of headstrong witches and their struggle to work together to keep a centuries-old promise and stop a dark witch from claiming a powerful elemental object. While a pilot is being penned for The Dagger, Particle6 is taking a unique approach to the deal by seeking to drive further demand for the IP by creating viral TikTok videos and by developing Magical Spell necklaces, which will be promoted via social media. “Particle6 is big on testing and analytics, and we always work hard to identify the right audience for every project,” said Eline van der Velden,...

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner “Spirited Away” is getting the stage play treatment, courtesy of Toho Co., Ltd and award-winning theater director John Caird. The play is eyeing a world premiere run February-March 2022 in Tokyo, followed by a tour through Japan in cities such as Osaka (April 2022), Fukuoka (May 2022), Sapporo (June 2022), and Nagoya (June and July). Caird is also known for being the Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
“Spirited Away” is often considered one of Miyazaki’s best films and, up until last year, was the highest grossing film in Japan. The story centers on Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl moving with her parents to their new home. The family loses itself in a mysterious world of fantastic spirits, ruled over by the sorceress Yubaba, who turns Chihiro’s parents into pigs. After a series of bizarre and dangerous challenges, including the loss of her identity, Chihiro must...

Audiences have been comparing Josh and Benny Safdie’s “Uncut Gems” to a cocaine rush since it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. I wouldn’t know, but it’s a trip all right: (Adam Sandler), which is not a place most moviegoers would care to spend much time. That’s because most moviegoers are looking for simple escapism, whereas “Uncut Gems” feels like being locked inside the pinwheeling brain of a lunatic for more than two hours — and guess what: It’s a gas!

Ballet, opera, and orchestra companies worldwide have allowed their performances to be screened in cinemas for years (and for the price of a ticket), but for the first time fans of Off-Broadway theater will be able to experience a production from the comfort of their homes. Theater composers seem to have a thing for “beloved” novels about ambitious girls, usually orphaned, making their way in an unwelcoming world. There’s a good reason for it, too: Such novels are typically in the public domain. Certainly it’s not because Jane Eyre (1847) and Little Women (1868) and Anne of Green Gables (1908) and The Secret Garden (1911) have made good musicals; only the last, which opened on Broadway in 1991, is bearable. Something about the very belovedness of these works makes them resistant to adaptation, perhaps because they encourage a worshipful approach to a process that benefits more from benign disrespect. In any case, the authors of that 2000 Jane Eyre musical — Paul Gordon (music and lyrics) and John Caird (book and direction) — are back at it with Daddy Long Legs. They should have known better. Not only does Jean Webster’s 1912 novel (styled Daddy-Long-Legs) cover very...

Choreographer and dancer who created stunning roles for his wife, Zizi Jeanmaire
When Roland Petit's Les Ballets des Champs Elysées opened its first London season in 1946, the company brought to the British dance scene an explosion of chic and excitement which had long been missing. Not only was the standard of male dancing from Petit and his fellow dancer Jean Babilée better than anything for many years, the enthusiasm of the young company was a contrast to the restrained correctness of the Sadler's Wells dancers. Les Forains, a piece about a troupe of strolling entertainers, distinguished by beautiful decors and costumes by Christian Bérard, was the triumph of what the critic Richard Buckle described as "an evening of wonderful surprises".

French dancer and choreographer Roland Petit died in Geneva on Sunday. He was 87. Associated with the Paris Opera Ballet and the Ballet de Marseille for a number of years, Petit was credited for creating more than 100 ballets throughout his career. Additionally, he choreographed dance sequences for a handful of movies, notably Samuel Goldwyn's Hans Christian Andersen (1952), a color extravaganza starring Danny Kaye, Farley Granger, and Petit's future wife Zizi Jeanmaire; two 1955 Leslie Caron vehicles, the Cinderella tale The Glass Slipper and Daddy Long Legs, which paired Caron with Fred Astaire; and Henri Decoin's Folies-Bergère (1956), with Jeanmaire, Eddie Constantine, and Nadia Gray. "With his muse Zizi Jeanmaire," whom Petit married in 1954, "he wrote some of the most beautiful pages of contemporary music hall," French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand eulogized. Roland Petit and Zizi Jeanmaire remained married until his death. Mitterrand quote via the BBC.
