First Brazilian film to win the award for Best Adventure Film and to receive a special mention for musical composition at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival.
It is the first film to mix 'cangaço' with Western, starting a Brazilian cinema subgenre called "Nordestern" -an amalgam of the words "Nordeste" (Northeast) and "Western".
The movie earned about US$50 million and was distributed in over 80 countries. However, most of the profits did not return to its production company, 'Cinematográfica Vera Cruz', since the film was distributed by Columbia Pictures, which bought it at a low price, compared to the international market.
The very first Brazilian film to compete at the Cannes Film Festival.
