This loosely based adaptation of 'Lady Windermere's Fan' is certainly not for Wildean purists but is a must for fans of Dolores del Rio amongst whom this reviewer definitely counts himself. Director Luis Saslavsky and his adaptors have made Mrs. Erlynne a far more sympathetic figure and have basically created a star vehicle for an actress once referred to by George Bernard Shaw as one of the two most beautiful things in the world, along with the Taj Mahal! The film boasts excellent production values of course and is very easy on the eye. The male characters don't exactly set the screen alight but interesting to see a younger Fernando Lamas as Lord Darlington. The final scenes where she redeems herself by saving the reputation of Lady Windermere, played with gusto by Maria Duval and bids farewell to the reconciled couple and her grandchild(!) are effective and touching but del Rio looks far too young to be Duval's mother. The title of the film is very clever as the full title of Wilde's original is: 'Lady Windermere's Fan. A Play about a Good Woman'!
