Poor old Maid
milton-freddy25 December 2013
John Price was a theater actor, but he had a lucky hand with this drama, where Ellen Gottschalch, a laundry shopkeeper put in a lonely hearts add, and Gunnar Lauring responds. He has masculine appeal making Ellen fall for him, however he is not quite responsible, which she lives to regret. Her trustfulness is thoroughly misused by the cunning Gunnar, and we are filled with sympathy for this unhappy old maid, who just wants to experience a bit of warmth and tenderness before it is too late. Ellen's fate is also hardened by a shrewd employee in the laundry shop, who takes care of his own demands on her account. The film benefits from a lively precise dialog and numerous fine details underway. Petrine Sonne as usual steals the picture when she comes around as Ellens loving old working companion. The drama is carried solely by Ellen Gottschalck delivering a performance of dignity and pride.
