1987 may be the year of the last great Argento movie.
The horror genre has known few voices greater or more influential than Dario Argento, a master craftsman and revolutionary stylist who, from his debut feature The Bird With the Crystal Plumage in 1970 through the late 1980s, is responsible for some of the best horror movies ever made: Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae, Phenomena. In 1987, he wrote and directed what might be his final masterpiece, the giallo-tinged slasher Opera, arguably his most technically accomplished—and bloodiest—film. While more of a standard whodunit than his abstract supernatural efforts, there is such precision to the photography, such expertly staged choreography both in front of and behind the camera, that the movie deserves to be named among his greatest works if only for the dazzling purity of the filmmaking on display.

The eyes have it: Claude Barras with Courgette - and his box of tricks. Photo: Richard Mowe
From the moment it bowed in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight last year until now, a modest budget animation film by an unknown director has been fêted and acclaimed at Festivals all over the world with, notably, an Oscar nomination and a César win in France. Claude Barras, the director of My Life as a Courgette (or Zucchini in the States) has barely had time to draw breath. He pauses to reflect on a phenomenal few months, his admiration for Nick Park and the Aardman Studios, his collaboration with French director Céline Sciamma, and why simplicity is the key to his work.
Richard Mowe: You have been living with My Life As A Courgette for quite some time - has it been a bit of an endurance test ?

The eyes have it. It's not often we see a dramatic smoky eye on Amy Adams—the Arrival star tends to wear neutral beauty looks on the red carpet. However, the SAG Award-nominated actress turned heads Sunday night in a stunning Brandon Maxwell dress, Tyler Ellis clutch and striking makeup, courtesy of celeb makeup artist Stephen Sollitto. "I'm usually super light-handed. I like a pretty natural look," said the veteran beauty pro. "We have the same aesthetic—[Amy] likes light makeup, too." But for the SAG Awards, Stephen was inspired by the color of Amy's Cartier necklace. Instead of going with a red-lip look, he decided to complement the ice-pool blue of the statement...

To say Poppy Delevingne brought the drama would be an understatement. The model was not only one of the best dressed people on the Met Gala red carpet, but she also killed it in the beauty department (thanks to beauty maven Charlotte Tilbury and her team). "[Poppy's ensemble] called for a look that straddled both the vintage and future beauty worlds," claimed the pro. "My team created a futuristic metallic rock chick eye, paired with an update on the Old Hollywood bombshell lip." Find the tutorial below! The Eyes Have It Step 1: For the vintage rock chick look, the lashes were thickly lined with Charlotte Tilbury Colour...

Elsewhere in the photos, Sarah — who’s on the run — attempts to have the bot removed from her mouth before it kills her. Meanwhile, manic mama-to-be Helena and Alison’s husband Donnie find themselves in quite an interesting position.

Blake Shelton has released his first single following his divorce from Miranda Lambert, and, yes, it's about heartbreak. But it also might be about the beginning of his relationship with Gwen Stefani, too. The new hit, "Came Here to Forget," describes a pair coming together in a bar to drink and get over their exes. In fact, a few of the lyrics read: "Girl getting over him and I'm getting over her / The eyes have it made, ain't gotta say a word / Misery loves company, that's why it's you and me." The chorus continues the theme of the song, "Keep salting the rim, getting even with her / Getting even with him, before the night is over...You better keep on keepin' it...

[CUSTOM_PLAYER_BRIGHTCOVE "4784756533001"] The highly-anticipated new song Blake Shelton called "a direct look into my life" has arrived - and the lyrics are… um… very interesting! "Came Here to Forget" is a "misery loves company" tale of two people who connect while trying to forget their exes. And while Shelton didn't write the song, with lyrics like "Girl getting over him / And I'm getting over her," it draws a definite parallel to the start of his relationship with girlfriend Gwen Stefani, following their divorces last year. Shelton sings: "The eyes have it made, ain't gotta say a word / Misery loves company, that's why...

Having previously plumbed the 17th-century and then the 1940s via Salem and Manhattan, Wgn America’s next period drama, Underground, aims to bring a modern sensibility to the senseless injustice of slavery in the United States circa 1857.

Specifically, as its title suggests, the 10-episode series — created by Misha Green (Sons of Anarchy) and Joe Pokaski (Heroes) and premiering Wednesday, March 9 at 10/9c) — offers an alternately gripping and illuminating look at the Underground Railroad system by which the bravest (and/or most desperate) of slaves sought to escape to the north, with the hope of living free.

The Eyes Have It: Ray’s Unnecessary Remakes Pales Next to Source
Thanks to mainstream America’s huffy dismissal of subtitles when it comes to cinema, we continue with another unnecessary remake of a foreign film, Secret in Their Eyes, an English language, celebrity studded face-lift of Argentinean Juan Jose Campanella’s 2009 title (which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film that year). Screenwriter Billy Ray, after snagging his own Oscar nod in 2014 for penning Captain Philips, makes his third directorial effort here, following 2007’s Breach and 2003’s Shattered Glass. Reworking Campanella’s pulpy subtext into a post 9/11 Los Angeles neo noir, kudos to Ray for revisiting a particularly awkward moment within a provocative framework. But the result is a glossy, Hollywood reworking which never feels better than a subpar rehash of something much greater. To be fair, Campanella’s original has its own set of problems, with...

Ben Shephard went green around the gills as he squared up to some fish eyes in his very own Bushtucker Trial on Good Morning Britain.
The TV presenter was set the challenge by Andi Peters - currently in Australia to report on I'm a Celebrity - which involved placing as many fish eyes as he could manage inside his mouth in 30 seconds. He was then permitted to spit them out to count them up.
Ahead of the challenge, he posted a picture of the unappetising bowl of eyes, along with the caption: "The eyes have it!! @andipeters I owe you Peters!! @susannareid100 can't wait- could you eat one???? 8.20 @gmb"

The eyes have it: Edith Scob stars in Eyes Without a Face.
The 1960 horror film Eyes Without a Face was directed by the highly regarded French filmmaker Georges Franju (Judex).
The movie tells the story of a brilliant, obsessive doctor (Pierre Brasseur, Children of Paradise), who, at his secluded chateau in the French countryside, attempts a radical plastic surgery to restore the beauty of his daughter’s (Edith Scob, Summer Hours) disfigured face. The horrifying price of his mission comes in the form of the faces of other young women, whom he kidnaps so he can use their own features to replace those of his daughter’s.
Eyes Without a Face is rare in horror cinema for its odd mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical, and it has been a major influence on the genre in the decades since its release.
