One of the best Hollywood historical epics takes Technicolor to Mexico for a Production Code version of La conquista: the Inquisition is still bad, but the Church is exonerated. Likewise with the invasion — Cesar Romero embodies a marvelous Hernán Cortés, substantially less murderous than the one we now know from accurate history books. Tyrone Power is the heartthrob hero and newcomer Jean Peters the lowborn girl who loves him. The magnificent scenery is matched by the music score of Alfred Newman.

It’s 007 in the saddle! Sean Connery didn’t become a career cowboy but his one stint as a Louis L’Amour hero is a diverting change of pace. And we couldn’t resist the pairing of two of moviedom’s most attractive actors — Connery and Brigitte Bardot.

This past weekend, the American Society of Cinematographers awarded Greig Fraser for his contribution to Lion as last year’s greatest accomplishment in the field. Of course, his achievement was just a small sampling of the fantastic work from directors of photography, but it did give us a stronger hint at what may be the winner on Oscar night. Ahead of the ceremony, we have a new video compilation that honors all the past winners in the category at the Academy Awards

Will 2017 be the year a superhero movie with fart jokes gets an Oscar nod? Though just about everyone in Hollywood would be surprised to hear “Deadpool” announced as an Academy Award nominee later this month, director Tim Miller’s comic book adaptation has exceeded expectations time and again since its release last February. Few people would have guessed a movie released a week before the 2016 Academy Awards would be part of the Oscar conversation a year later, let alone a long-gestating tale about a superhero obsessed with chimichangas.
Ryan Reynolds’ pet project for nearly a decade, “Deadpool” follows Marvel’s most unconventional anti-hero: Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative given superhuman healing powers after a malicious experiment that almost destroys his life. Made for $50 million, the movie grossed nearly $800 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-earning R-rated movie of all time (and the highest-grossing 20th Century Fox...

We're less than a week from Hollywood's High Holy Night. Are you excited yet?
For today's trivia party we'll look at the only people to win exactly six Oscars. Four men. It's always men (sigh). Only 11 people have won more Oscars than these four men. I did not include confusing cases like Visual FX guru Dennis Murren -- IMDb argues exactly 6 but that depends on how you count them since his prizes are many and a confusing jumble of technical achievements, special Oscars, and regular competitive statues. (Unfortunately I couldn't find photographs of the set decorators)

This producer won more Oscars in the short film categories than anyone other than the legendary Walt Disney and Frederick Quimby (of Tom & Jerry fame) but he won them for live action films. His first Oscar, though, was in the inaguaral year (1933) of a category called "Best Assistant Director" which...

As we launch the Best Cinematography category in our Oscars predictions center, several people have a chance to make history at this year's ceremony. For instance, Emmanuel Lubezki has won the award for the last two years ("Gravity" in 2013, "Birdman" in 2014), and as the cinematographer for "The Revenant" this year he has a chance to go three-for-three, which would make him the first in Oscar history to win in three consecutive years. -Break- Experts' Oscar predictions update: 'Spotlight' pulls further ahead of 'Joy' with 'The Martian' rising fast As it stands, Lubezki is one of only four to have won back-to-back. The others were Leon Shamroy ("Wilson" in 1944, "Leave Her to Heaven" in 1945), Winton Hoch ("Joan of Arc" in 1948, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" in 1949) and John Toll ("Legends of the Fall" in 1994, "Braveheart" in 1995). Today, Aug. 28, '15, TCM is focusing on another Swedish actress, three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, who would have turned 100 years old tomorrow. By winning the Best Cinematography Oscar for a second year in a row, "Birdman" director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki has joined a truly elite club whose ranks haven't been breached in nearly two decades. Only four other cinematographers have won the prize in two consecutive years. The last time it happened was in 1994 and 1995, when John Toll won for Edward Zwick's "Legends of the Fall" and Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" respectively. Before that you have to go all the way back to the late '40s, when Winton Hoch won in 1948 (Victor Fleming's "Joan of Arc" with Ingrid Bergman) and 1949 (John Ford's western "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"). Both victories came in the color category, as the Academy awarded prizes separately for black-and-white and color photography from 1939 to 1956. Leon Shamroy also won back-to-back color cinematography Oscars, for Henry King's 1944 Woodrow Wilson biopic "Wilson" and John M. Stahl...

‘Gone with the Wind’ actress Mary Anderson dead at 96; also featured in Alfred Hitchcock thriller ‘Lifeboat’ Mary Anderson, an actress featured in both Gone with the Wind and Alfred Hitchcock’s adventure thriller Lifeboat, died following a series of small strokes on Sunday, April 6, 2014, while under hospice care in Toluca Lake/Burbank, northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Anderson, the widow of multiple Oscar-winning cinematographer Leon Shamroy, had turned 96 on April 3. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1918, Mary Anderson was reportedly discovered by director George Cukor, at the time looking for an actress to play Scarlett O’Hara in David O. Selznick’s film version of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller Gone with the Wind. Instead of Scarlett, eventually played by Vivien Leigh, Anderson was cast in the small role of Maybelle Merriwether — most of which reportedly ended up on the cutting-room floor. Cukor was later fired from the project; his replacement, Victor Fleming,...

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"The Conjuring"
What's It About? James Wan's "The Conjuring" follows the paranormal hauntings of a Rhode Island farmhouse, based on the real life events documented by investigators of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga). When the Perron family moves into a new home they begin experiencing loud pounding noises and eerie occurrences that force them to contact the Warren's to help rid them of their home's evil essence.
Why We're In: "The Conjuring" wasn't just one of the best scary movies in years for its hefty amount of solid jumps and scares, but it also took full advantage of the horror genre. Wan's film paid homage to old-school scary movies by implementing the horror tactics we love, bringing a refreshing creativity to exhausted cliches.

The release of Lincoln could not be better timed. The plan must be to get as much of a boost from the presidential election as possible, yet at the same time avoid being cast as part of the political debate, by opening after November 6th. Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner would rather their film be seen as a portrait of a great American hero above contemporary politics, or at least not see it hijacked by 21st century bickering. They have every right, even though upon closer inspection it might become clear where they stand. However, let’s leave that for later and move on to some Oscar history. Only four men have earned Best Actor nominations for playing Us Presidents, with Daniel Day-Lewis now certain to be the fifth. (For context, the Academy has over the years nominated nine Kings of England.) The list contains one other Lincoln, one Woodrow Wilson, and...

It’s that time again, where we hand out grades to the best and worst performing rookie QBs of the week. Also, keep your eyes peeled for a mid-season report card that I will be putting together some time in the next few days. For now, here’s week eight’s grades:
Russell Wilson, Seattle. Final grade: B
After a poor showing last week, Wilson has bounced back up the charts to be the top graded rookie this week. His Seahawks teams lost a close one to the Lions, but Wilson played well. He completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts for 236 yards. This included two touchdowns and one interception,...

The juicy, filthy memoir of a Hollywood fixer
In his greatly underrated 2006 biography of Nicole Kidman, the film critic David Thomson explained why he had made the surprising decision not to meet the actress in the course of his research. For the magic of cinema to work, he wrote, "the actress and the spectator must remain strangers". While honest about the hopeless desire he felt for Kidman while watching her films, he had no wish to encounter her in real life. Thomson places himself among those cinema-lovers who "would always protect and preserve desire by ensuring that it is never satisfied".
Such scruples don't seem to trouble Scotty Bowers. For decades, Bowers – now 88 – was the "go-to guy" in Hollywood for "whatever people desired". Bowers was a bisexual gas-pump jockey and later a bartender, a handsome ex-marine who made it his mission to satisfy the desires of the stars as well as his own.

Jay-z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne is shaping up to be the most eagerly anticipated album of the year. With that anticipation comes much speculation. Fans, critics and even other rappers themselves are all looking forward to the LP's August 8 release date, trying to predict the impact and outcome of the rap mash-up.
"It should be some big records on there; it's Jay-z and Kanye West," Jadakiss told MTV News.
Relative rap newcomer Wiz Khalifa also had high hopes, considering the solo legacies Hov and Yeezy have already laid out for themselves. "These are two people who have made great music in the past together, but [also] on their own, so coming together is gonna be an awesome thing," he said. "It can only mean well for hip-hop.

...and if you thought that it was only the 'lucky' Freida Pinto who's cashing and bagging in all the big Hollywood films, then you better re-think because here's why! So what's the first thing a journalist would do when he hears the 'Breaking News' coming all the way from Hollywood? We all know, don't we? Well, I happened to text my dear friend Anil Kapoor. Read on! Breaking News has just come in from the other side of the ocean that acclaimed director / writer Roger Donaldson (Hungry Rabbit Jumps, The Bank Job, The Recruit) has locked in his next directorial project titled Cities which will star Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Clive Owen (Duplicity, Inside Man, Children Of Men, Closer) and our very own Anil Kapoor. This is Anil Kapoor's second big Hollywood film that he has bagged after getting famous in the West with his Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

It will come as no surprise to fans of Anderson’s and Schwartzman’s that the latter has joined Anderson’s new movie, Moonrise Kingdom.
Schwartzman’s acting debut saw him take the lead in Anderson’s second film, Rushmore, which, like all of Anderson’s films, is something of a cult favourite. The two have since worked together on The Darjeeling Limited, which Schwartman also helped to write, and on 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, and their pairing over the years has been incredibly successful. The two clearly must have a great connection with each other, having started their careers much at the same time together, and there is every reason to expect that Moonrise Kingdom will be another Anderson success.
Schwartzman was last seen on the big screen in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as the last of Ramona Flowers’ boyfriends, he has since been seen on HBO in Bored To Death,...

I was saddened to learn this morning that Betty Garrett, the great star of stage, screen, and TV, passed away yesterday at the age of 94 after suffering an aortic aneurysm.
Garrett was one of those rare people — like, say, Jack Valenti — who happened to be a witness to and/or participant in a remarkably high number of historic events of the 20th century. She was a member of Orson Welles’s famed Mercury Theatre company, and was with him on the night that he shook up America with his infamous radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” (1938); she was Frank Sinatra’s leading lady in two of the earliest great M-g-m musical-comedies, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” (1949) and “On the Town” (1949); her career was greatly hurt by the Hollywood Red Scare after her husband, the Oscar nominated actor Larry Parks, refused to name names before the House Committee...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

Tim Burton tampers with the children's classic to his cost in this lifeless reimagining of Lewis Carroll's book
Tim Burton is in love with the Victorian age. His childhood idol was Vincent Price, who started out playing Prince Albert on stage, specialised in Victorian morbidity and made one of his final screen appearances in Burton's Edward Scissorhands. Burton's last film, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, was a bracing excursion into Victorian melodrama, and it was inevitable that his interest in mythology and the adolescent imagination would eventually attract him to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Appropriately his London office was once the home of Arthur Rackham, who succeeded Sir John Tenniel as Alice's illustrator.
The characters, language, puzzles and predicaments of Carroll's 1865 novel and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, became and remain part of the texture of our lives, as embedded as ancient mythology and more endearing.

Apart from Henry King’s “Wilson” and Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” and “W.”, it’s hard to recall very many notable films based on presidents, both living and former. It’s difficult to see why. As English Bob might have said in “Unforgiven”, no one is traumatized by the sight of a president, much less one seen on screen (Helen Mirren’s portrayal in “The Queen”, however, might have been apocryphal in retrospect had it not been so good). Now, in the spirit of “Tombstone” and “Wyatt Earp”, Variety reports that Steven Spielberg and Robert Redford are set to direct dueling Lincoln films. It seems strange to release both of them now, so close together, but Redford’s vision should prove to be quite different: “Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible,” as Spielberg said. “The Conspirator”, as Redford’s version is called, will star James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn...

Actress and model Ruth Ford has died at her home in New York at the age of 98.
A former member of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre troupe, Ford was a regular leading light on Broadway throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
She won rave reviews for role in plays like No Exit, Dinner at Eight and Requiem for a Nun, in which she co-starred with her husband, Zachary Scott.
Her longtime home in the Dakota building was a gathering spot for her many artist and writer friends, including Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Edward Albee, according to the New York Times.
Born in Mississippi, she arrived in New York in the 1930s and found work as a model for photographers Cecil Beaton and Man Ray.
In 1938, Ford joined Welles’ Mercury Theatre group and made her Broadway debut the same year in Shoemaker’s Holiday.
She moved to Hollywood in 1941 and went on to appear in films like Wilson, The Woman Who Came Back and Murder on the Waterfront.

The last time Dennis Quaid and Julianne Moore worked together he played her unfaithful husband in "Far From Heaven." Now they are to reunite as two sides of the most famous triangle in political history — President Bill Clinton and now Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in the upcoming film "A Special Relationship."
The biopic will mark the directorial debut of Peter Morgan who will be working from his own script. While the focus of the film will be on the relationship between the Clintons and their UK counterparts — Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Booth — in the late 1990s, it will address the president's indiscretion with Monica Lewinsky.
For Morgan, this is the third and final chapter in a trilogy that began with "The Deal" in 2003. That telefilm detailed discussions between one-time friends and political rivals Tony Blair and Gordon Brown that resulted in the former assuming the leadership...

Monroeville, Pa, is no stranger to zombies, especially at their fabled mall where, in 1978, the original (and still best) Dawn of the Dead was filmed. Now, thirty years later, the shambling dead once again invaded for a three-day event which culminated in a good charitable cause. More on that later. ZombieFest, the annual event, was one hell of a good time, and if you missed it, you should promptly go and kick yourself wherever is most tender.
Friday night the fest kicked off at the Churchill Valley Country Club with the Zombie Ball. Costumes were optional, but well received, as the evening included a costume contest, a silent auction (the proceeds from which went to breast cancer research), and a fifty-fifty drawing in which the lucky ticket holder got half the money taken to purchase the tickets; the rest also went to breast cancer research. Amid all the fine surroundings,...
