Review by Roger Carpenter
After cutting his teeth on a couple of spaghetti westerns (Django Defies Sartana; Death’s Dealer), director Pasquale Squitieri moved into the popular gangster genre with Gang War in Naples and Blood Brothers, this last film including the all-star cast of Claudia Cardinale, Franco Nero, and Fabio Testi. He then directed The Climber (1975) , a story about a young, cocky hood who climbs his way up the mafia ladder.
Cult actor Joe Dallesandro stars as the cocky hoodlum, Aldo. Dallesandro had just completed Warhol’s Dracula and Frankenstein films and had decided to stay in Europe. He was riding a crest of popularity and had no trouble finding work. Squitieri was happy to pick him up for this film, alongside co-star Stefania Casini (Warhol’s Dracula, Bertolucci’s 1900, as well as Suspiria).
The film opens with Aldo making off with a load of stolen cigarettes from the docks of Naples.

The Climber (1976) is now available Blu-ray From Arrow Video
After shooting cult favorites Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula in Europe, Joe Dallesandro spent much of the seventies making movies on the continent. In France he worked with auteurs like Louis Malle and Walerian Borowczyk, and in Italy he starred in all manner of genre fare from poliziotteschi (Savage Three, Season for Assassins) to nunsploitation (Killer Nun).
The Climber follows in the tradition of gangster classics such as The Public Enemy and Scarface as it charts the rise and inevitable fall of small-time smuggler Aldo (Dallesandro). Beaten and abandoned by the local gang boss after he tries to skim off some profits for himself, Aldo forms his own group of misfits in order to exact revenge…

A little over a decade ago, Mario Cantone performed a one-man show on Broadway in which he reminisced, among other things, about his first acting gig in New York City when he was cast as a rustic in a Shakespearean comedy performing in Central Park. Night after night, the audience never laughed, and he wanted to scream out at them, “You try to making f-king 400-year-old jokes work!” I thought of Cantone’s comment while I watched the new musical “These Paper Bullets!,” which opened Tuesday at the Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater. It’s based on the...

Whether you will like These Paper Bullets! — the new Bard–on–Carnaby Street confection at the Atlantic — will probably depend on how much you like Much Ado About Nothing. Depend inversely, I mean. If that most deeply human of Shakespeare’s comedies means little to you, its adaptation as a play with music (not really a musical) may amuse. Otherwise you are likely to find it, as I did, leaden, juvenile, chaotic, and nearly intolerable, except when it sings. Then, it’s nice. For that, give credit to Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day fame, whose nine songs, with titles like “Give It All to You” and “Regretfully Yours,” efficiently recall the pleasures of the Beatles circa 1964. For the rest, well, even the playwright, Rolin Jones, seems conflicted. The credit for his text variously states that it is by him, adapted by him, or stolen by him. (Was “diminished by...

Phyllis Schuringa, artistic associate and casting director at the Geffen Playhouse, took a step back in time to cast the season opener “These Paper Bullets,” a fun throwback to the ‘60s take-off of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The show originally opened at the Yale Repertory and will continue on to the Atlantic Theater Company after its Geffen run. The show was initially intended to as a complete package, but some actors became unavailable, giving Schuringa the chance to be involved in casting a couple roles in addition to all the understudies. “It was kind of an all hands on deck process,” she says. Working with Telsey + Company in New York, Schuringa and team cast Nicole Parker to play the lead character Beatrice (echoing Beatrice in “Much Ado About Nothing”). The role of Leo Messina had been cast, but there was a last minute drop-out, so Schuringa suggested Nick Ullet.

Remembered primarily for several giallo titles (and some more exploitative sub-genre cannibal thrillers), illustrious director Umberto Lenzi also helmed several Euro-crime police thrillers (polizieschi). Raro Video brings his first foray into the crime world, 1973’s Gang War in Milan, to Blu-ray with a new, digitally restored transfer. While it’s about as straightforward as its title promises, it’s filled with amusing instances.
Antonio Sobato (father of soap star Antonio Sobato Jr.) is a produce vendor who moonlights as Milan’s most influential pimp, Toto Cangemi. A staunchly proud Sicilian, Toto doesn’t take too kindly to French gangster and drug lord Roger Daverty, aka La Capitaine (Philippe Leroy), who makes an aggressive offer to unite their crime fronts. If Toto’s girls also sell La Capitaine’s goods, they’ll be rolling in the dough. But nobody couches on Toto’s turf, and the rival powers are soon going head to head.

Most of you haven't even seen The Raid 2: Berandal yet, but that didn't stop the studio from releasing a deleted scene from the film that you won't see in theaters. The clip is called "Gang War" and it's an insanely violent and bloody shootout that gives you a little taste of how crazy this movie actually is. Also, If this got cut… just imagine what they kept in the movie. Just a little food for thought.
Having seen the film, I'm not even sure where this scene would fit in, but it must have been a little subplot that didn't work for the final cut. The movie comes out this weekend on March 28th.
