Some Bernie Sanders supporters scarfed beans as part of a fart-in protest at the DNC in Philly, Stephen Colbert noted at the top of his final night of DNC live shows. “Some might question this tactic, but it’s part of a long tradition of political activism,” Colbert continued, nothing it was Patrick Henry who said, “Give me liberty or pull my finger.” But Sanders did not have the corner on disappointed delegates. Richard Kind isn’t giving up on his guy, Martin…...

Rrmbllll Kkkkrrakkk goes the lightning as Frank Miller’s Batman hits the streets for the first time in 1986’s seminal The Dark Knight Returns. A faceless, lowlife pimp throws one of his girls into a cab, threatening to cut her. The bearded, downtrodden cabbie accepts a stack of bills from the pimp; he mutters to himself, “dog eat dog world…” Unseen, Batman descends onto the yellow, checkered cab’s roof. The pimp finds himself on the receiving end of some brutality off-panel. The money is shredded. And with another Krakk – end scene.

The independent filmmakers behind the third installment of the Atlas Shrugged trilogy exclusively released a teaser trailer to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, one that uses sand art to illustrate its point that the movie will promote founding principles of limited government. The trailer features artist Joe Castillo, a season-seven alum of America's Got Talent, constructing an image of the Statue of Liberty from sand while famous text from Revolutionary War rebel Patrick Henry invades the screen, ending with, "Give me liberty, or give me death." Paula Deen recently scored a $75 million investment to rebuild her empire after losing all her endorsements after admitting to using the n-word. And she didn’t seem to learn her lesson about keeping her mouth shut. She thinks her comeback is a lot like what Michael Sam is facing in the NFL. “I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out. He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. The first time Lady Gaga appeared on Saturday Night Live in 2009, she showed up for three minutes to have a catfight with Madonna. Now she's the host, the musical guest, and the bigger star. On Saturday night's show, Gaga went full-circle, making fun of her own music's resemblance to Madonna's hits. But the moment was just a blip on the screen, during a night when Gaga rarely left the stage. Turns out that SNL is an ideal showcase for one of Lady Gaga's greatest strengths as a performer: creating characters.

In the nine years since their formation, Denver-based metallers Havok have already turned out three fairly successful albums: in 2009, Burn landed them a deal with major label Candlelight Records, and two years later their sophomore release Time Is Up brought the band worldwide acclaim as one of the metal acts to watch for, landing them a choice slot on tours with metal legends like Anthrax, Sepultura and Testament. Their latest release, Unnatural Selection, cracked the Billboard Top 200 list in its first week and solidified Havok as a solid player, indeed one of the premier names, in the hit-and-miss '80s thrash revival – a movement comprised mainly of up-and-coming 21st century bands seizing the flame first stoked by the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth. From the simple but effective songwriting and tight technical skills to rock-solid production and vintage-style album art, this record comes off like a newly-unearthed time...

Back in 2008, there was talk of bringing comic book/graphic novel legends Dave Gibbons and Frank Miller’s comic book character Martha Washington to the big screen. Could it still happen? Martha Washington first appeared in 1990 in the Dark Horse-published comic book Give Me Liberty, where her story “begins in the squalid corridors of a maximum-security housing project, where a young girl will rise from the war-torn streets of Chicago to battle injustice in a world insane with corruption. She will be called a hero, a traitor, and nearly everything in between, but all along the way, her courage, her integrity, and her unwavering commitment to that most valuable of...

At the Sundance Film Festival's Moving the Masses panel, which considered how the media can best be utilized for progressive change, Naomi Wolf had a message for her fellow activists: Ur Doing It Wrong. Despite the headlines generated by her Occupy Wall Street arrest, Wolf was arguably the panelist with the least amount of hardcore on-the-ground activist experience: Omar Shargawi directed the documentary "1/2 Revolution," which looks at the demonstrations in Tahrir Square, while Lois Gibbs was a Love Canal environmental activist featured in the environmental doc "A Fierce Green Fire" and AIDS activist Peter Staley is a signficant voice in "How to Survive a Plague." But Wolf, who is the bestselling author of "The Beauty Myth" and "Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries," was the panel's agent provacateur (a phrase whose plural form Wolf took the time to pretentiously mispronounce in French). ...

Recent birthday girl and alleged pothead Miley Cyrus is making headlines once again today for her controversial behavior, but this time it’s political. The former Disney star is adding her voice to Occupy Wall Street protests by releasing a music video consisting entirely of footage from the world wide demonstrations. She posted the clip for the 2010 song “Liberty Walk” to her YouTube account, dedicating it to “the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in…” This move has upset her more conservative fans, or more appropriately, the more conservative parents of her fans.”Miley Cyrus is now banned from my house along with 30 other entertainment political wannabes,” one furious father commented on her channel.
Is the clip really so inflammatory? Miley might be promoting revolution, but weren’t people like George Washington considered revolutionary in their day? Do conservatives have a problem with our founding fathers!

Announced back in October, The Secret Service, the brain child of writer Mark Millar, artist Dave Gibbons, and Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn, has been promoted a lot differently than Millar’s previous work. In the past, he has used all sorts of media, such as print and youtube, to promote a book up to a year before it’s release. None of this has been done with The Secret Service, though the names behind the title have done a lot to push the book into the public eye. While Millar still keeps the cards close to his chest in terms of story, he has shared some information on the book’s creation with CliNT, a magazine he is credited with creating, and Comic Book Resources.
One of the main thrust of the books marketing was correspondence, (both letters are reprinted in the magazine) between the writer and the artist in the mid 80′s,...

Dismissed by comic-book fans (those who know of it at all) as the Captain America with the Italian Red Skull, this was a film that I had publicly mused about going to see when I took a look at the Fantasia line-up.
To my surprise, I got the following comment on July 13th from Albert Pyun, director of Captain America, not to mention The Sword and the Sorcerer and Cyborg, “Hey Michael – hope to see you at my screening of Captain America and Tales of an Ancient Empire. Think you will enjoy both. They are sort of throwbacks to the 1980′s cinema and I think a lot of fun and laughs… And I really want to read...

Welcome back to the Fantasy League, Zoners!
It has been an eventful, newsy break, what with the excitement about Stephen’s upcoming performance in Company, followed by the big sail from Charleston to Bermuda. When does the man sleep? What surprise will he spring on us next? I’m blown away, so this week I’m going to take a slight detour and ask a fun question: Since this is the Fantasy League, what is your Professional Stephen fantasy? What artistic challenge would you like to see him take on—something theatrical? Musical? Cinematic? Literary?
I’ll give you mine: I want to see Stephen star in a remake of the film A Face in the Crowd, playing the role of Lonesome Rhodes (a terrific Andy Griffith originally, very far from Mayberry). It’s the dark side of Colbert Nation, an image of what could happen if Stephen were to...

Dark Horse Comics' The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the 21st Century will arrive in stores this summer. The softcover release will compile all six volumes of Frank Miller and Dave Gibbon's acclaimed comic, from Give Me Liberty to Martha Washington Dies. "Over the years, Martha has attained a kind of reality for me. Not all fictional characters you deal with do, but I think I speak for myself and Frank when I say that we really do have a sense of knowing Martha (more)...
