Here is a truly insane idea for a film...one that defies all logic. Two brothers own a steel company and both have sons that they send off to college. One is a lazy socialite student who doesn't apply himself--just like his father. After all, his family is rich and he's gotten everything he wanted. The other has worked his way through school the hard way. But here is the insane part...the hardworking son was apparently raised by a poor family for the rich man in order to teach the young man character. Heck, the young man doesn't even know that his parents are fostering him and he's the steel mill owner's son!! Now that the young man graduated, his real father STILL hasn't revealed himself and he must work his way up from the bottom in the industry! The old man wants to see his boy rise up through the company...with absolutely no help at all in order for him to be a great guy capable of taking over his portion of the company. Does this make any sense?! Absolutely not! And, it makes you wonder how the story got made in the first place. Didn't anyone read the script and notice how the idea made little sense?! Perhaps tiny Chesterfield Studio couldn't afford anyone on staff to read the scripts they produced!
So how does this nutty plan work out? Well, one unexpected result is the lazy son. Of course he screws up as an executive...but he really envies his poor friend (his cousin) and wants to work in the machine shop. And, after a while it's obvious he's really not so much lazy but working the wrong sort of job. Another unexpected result is that the hardworking but poor guy soon becomes a bit of a socialist and is soon head of a unionization effort and is the bane of the steel mill co-owners when he organizes a strike! Both of these unforeseen results are pretty funny as well as ironic...and make a stupid idea for a film at least interesting despite itself!
Despite the film being confusing and nonsensical, is it any good....or should you just pass on this cheap B-movie? Well, it's a mixed bag. The idea IS nutty and what comes of it isn't bad at all. But it's also very rushed and could have been a lot better. Overall, a film that will entertain but which makes you wonder what the writer was thinking!!
