Thelma and Patsy Try an Insurance Scam Warning: Spoilers
In an open convertible, Thelma Todd and Patsy Kelly are speeding along on a crowded city street and accidentally bump into the rear end of a stake bed truck loaded with cardboard boxes. The boxes tumble down into the convertible covering up Thelma and Patsy. Eddie Foy, Jr. is a shyster attorney who sees the accident and he rushes forward and propositions the girls with an offer of a settlement of $50,000 if they will allow him to take their case. He has the ambulance driver take a screaming Patsy back to his apartment. Patsy insists that she has not been hurt in the accident, but scheming Thelma persuades her to go along with the plan because of the tempting $50,000 payout. At the apartment, Eddie Foy, Jr. shows the girls a collection of fake limbs and decides Patsy has a broken leg. He puts Patsy in a bed which has been rigged with a hole for her real leg and the fake leg is arranged on top of the mattress so that it can be inspected by the insurance adjuster. Eddie Foy, Jr. hopes to pass the inspection by having the fake leg covered by a blanket during the inspection because he knows that the inspector will simply rap on it with a hammer. A visitor arrives, and Thelma, Patsy, and Eddie think it is the adjuster, but it turns out that he is simply a telephone repairman. Patsy is in the bed practicing her moans and screams of pain while Thelma weaves a story about the accident. The telephone repairman proceeds to bring out a variety of tools including hammers, saws, and a soldering flame, all of which Thelma and Patsy think he intends to use as torture devices on her leg. Meanwhile, the real insurance adjusters arrive and Eddie Foy, Jr. delays them at the door while he sees what Thelma and Patsy are doing with the telephone repairman. Eddie hustles the repairman out the door with his black satchel, and explains to the insurance adjusters that he was a doctor examining Patsy. Eddie gets a couple of chairs for the insurance adjusters. The first offer to the girls is a flat payment of $500. Eddie Foy Jr., in his role as their attorney scoffs at this offer and demands more. The adjuster's next offer is $1000 payment in full. Meanwhile, a pet dog has discovered Patsy's real leg sticking down through the hole in the mattress, and has begun pulling her stocking off and licking her toes. Patsy becomes extremely agitated by the dog, the blanket is pulled away from her legs accidentally, and the adjusters discover that she has three legs. They pick up the artificial limb, and say "It was a lovely morning in spring". This is a reference to the tale that Thelma spun when she first began telling them about the details of the accident. And so, the comedy ends.

I'll Be Suing You (1934)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Thelma Todd and Patsy Kelly are in their car speeding when they accidentally bump into the back of a parked truck. A no-good lawyer arrives on the scene and talks the girls into pretending that they're hurt so they can get some quick cash. This short features some of the most annoying attempts at comedy that you're likely to see. Kelly was obviously a talented lady and could be funny but at the same time she also had the ability to go so over-the-top that you'd want to blow your own brains out and that's the case here. She was always loud and in your face but nothing quite like what she does here. There are several scenes where she just screams at the top of her lungs and this here was nearly enough to make one want to turn the film off. The loudness of her character was just downright annoying and especially during some of the early scenes where she's fighting with the lawyer after the wreck. Todd, on the other hand, manages to be pretty good but for some reason the screenplay doesn't offer her too much to do and for the most part she just gets to sit around and watch Kelly go wild. There are a few funny sequences in the film including one where a telephone repairman enters the room and the girls mistake him for the insurance man. What follows is certainly the best laughs in the film.
