Quotes

  • Paul Held : Hello, Bill

Bill - a murderer : Hello, Mr. Held

Paul Held : Well, you'll be out of here soon.

Bill - a murderer : I have been out. I broke out. KIlled the wife and her boyfriend, now I'm in for good.

Paul Held : That's too bad.

Bill - a murderer : Too bad, nothing. I'm happy. Wondering where that woman was all the time used to drive me crazy.

Paul Held : Yeah, well you know where she is now.

    Bill - a murderer : I know where I hope she is!

    [he laughs]

  • Paul Held : Schultz?

    Schultz : Yes, sir.

Paul Held : You've been drinking again.

    Schultz : Of *course.*

Paul Held : Aren't you ashamed of yourself?

Schultz : No. If it weren't for the alcohol I'd go to the dogs. Copying these murder papers depresses me, drops me down, and drink lifts me up.

Paul Held : Hmm, your life must be a series of ups and downs.

  • Paul Held : You may take the afternoon off, Hilda.

Paul Held : Ohh, thank you. I'll make the most of it.

Paul Held : Doing what, Hilda - I'm curious to know what a lady lawyer does with her spare time.

Hilda Frey : Probably forgets that she *is* a lawyer... and sometimes forgets that she's a lady.

  • Paul Held : [Hilda enters the room]  Sit down, Hilda. Tell me, how do you think the case looks?

Hilda Frey : Not too good. So many wife murderers have been acquitted on the same defense I fear reaction. The jury is liable to doubt the existence of enough lovers to go around.

Paul Held : No, you're wrong, Hilda. No matter how low a woman may fall, there's always a man waiting for her.

Hilda Frey : Then there's still hope for me.
