A Brazilian Classic, Considered by Most of the Professional Critics as the Best Brazilian Movie Ever

In 1933, in Rio de Janeiro, the engineer Marcos (Durval Bellini) kills his wife on his wedding night, after discovering she had had an affair. In his trial, he is considered not-guilt, since he was defending his honor. He decides to move to the country, working in the construction of a factory. Marcos meets Sonia (Dea Selva), a naive young woman who is engaged of Décio (Décio Murilo), and they fall in love with each other. Décio discovers their romance, fights with Marcos and dies. In the end, Marcos and Sonia get married.

This slow film is a Brazilian classic, considered by most of the professional critics as one or maybe the best Brazilian movie ever. The story is very innocent in the present days. A man kills his wife defending his honor because she was unfaithful in the past and is absolved by the jury. The metaphoric use of the machines in the factory to symbolize an intercourse between Marcos and Sonia in the erotic scene in the garden is very creative in a time of sexual repression. The use of a portable camera consisting of a large box is very funny in the present days. This movie was restored and is available on VHS in Brazil. Unfortunately, it seems that different reels were used, alternating the quality of sound and image. A must see film for lovers of cinema as art. My vote is nine.

Maybe the best brazilian film ever

Ganga Bruta is, maybe, the best brazilian film ever made. As, for sure, Humberto Mauro is the greatest brazilian film maker. For its age, the movie continues to brake patterns of narrative line, building modern structures of editing and screenwriting.
