Marta's a charmer
marcslope19 November 2010
Saw a rare print of this German musical at MOMA yesterday, and darned if Marta Eggerth, its then-19-year-old star, wasn't there to enjoy it. She's a spry and vivacious 98, and informed us that 1) she'd never seen it (she was so busy back then) and 2) the kiss from her leading man was her first-ever. It's a slight and charming musical, with only two real songs, endlessly repeated, and a few distinct Billy Wilder witticisms in its unremarkable screenplay. Marta's the bright-eyed working girl, a subway ticket vendor, pursued by a pilot and a workmate, who in turn is loved by a cigarette girl who works above ground. They're all nice company, there are some splendid shots of Weimar Berlin -- the director and DP, not major talents, liked to wield a fluid camera -- and there's a bit of a Rene Clair feel to it, and not a hint of the disaster about to hit the Republic. Marta's soprano is absolutely lovely, as is her personality. I suppose most Americans who know her at all know her from her other-woman role in "For Me and My Gal." She's very different here, and altogether winning.

Charming film with a soaring Eggerth
TheLittleSongbird8 July 2017
Yet another example of Marta Eggerth singing music her voice was perfect for and having a role that played to her strengths. Since seeing more of her, she has really grown on me and to me it is a shame that some of her films are not easy to find when they are much better show-cases of her than when she featured in support in 'For Me and Mu Gal' and 'Presenting Lily Mars'.

Eggerth is just delightful here. She has such a sprightly charm, fiery gusto and heartfelt nuance. While not everybody is going to like her voice, to me it has been very dependent on whether the music suits her or not. Eggerth not only has music that is perfect for her voice (which sounds incredible and remarkably mature for somebody so young) but she sings it beautifully.

She is well supported by the rest of the cast, that performed with charm, grace and like they were enjoying themselves. They all allow her to shine and never upstage her.

The music itself is infectious, full of energy and lovely to listen to. 'The Blue from the Sky' is a very nice-looking film, with some particularly splendid shots, while the direction is very competent and never lets the film lose pace and there are some very funny, bubbly and wistful Billy Wilder witticisms.

Despite having a lot of charm to it the story is very slight and fairly obvious at times, even for an Eggerth film. Of the script, the witticisms shine but the rest of it fails to properly distinguish itself.

In conclusion, charming film and Eggerth soars in it. 8/10 Bethany Cox

one of Marta's Best Roles in Germany

Warning: Spoilers
This was an excellent Wiermarchish musical, made at the time Hitler was being voted on. So this pictures has no propaganda in it. But first That Nazi version of the Murdoch News, back in the early 40' attached to our movie before the film.Isn't that very liberal,Rudolph Hess tells all the Nazi members that big business will not Exploit Them. Now if they were only liberal towards German Jewish citizens.A factory is shown where mislead German citizens collect all the copper, to be Melted for the war effort. Isn't that patriotic? Those sweet Nazi soldiers show ,in front of the camera, How they pretend to treat British war prisoners right. By forcing them to lie in front of the camera how they have given them food and wine and cigarettes and now that the war is over for them, while behind the camera they probably have them all tortured then shot.Another scene where they pretend in ,front of the camera, to treat the french prisoners, the way the french prisoners were treated in Le Grand Illusion. Then torture them and murder them behind the camera On the good News , which was bad for the Nazis, the British bombs a Nazi camp . Hurry for our side!. Then the bad new, you see all the Stukas bombing English factories, while you hear this hate song against the British, Boy! Wachnau news is a bunch of laughs! It reminds you of something,C.n.n. and Fox news. Cause they are no different. Inspite of the fact that Billy wilder did some of the screen play and it was made before Hitler, Due to the fact it was made during the election year. Don't expect any cable station like t.c.m. or A.m.c. or history channel to ever show this. They are some what politically correct against this genre due to Hitler Legacy.Martha plays Annni who just applied for a job as a ticket women ,in the subway.Erno Verbes, who would later escape the Nazis, like Martha did, and do small parts for American films, plays a Ubahn officer Fleet Hugo, is a co worker who introduces her to the job as well as develop an interest in her. He introduces her to another coworker, I think the manager, an older an fat U PaPa,played by Jackob Tiedtke. Cigarette Cecily, which should offend anti smoking political correctness, works above the station selling candy and cigarettes, played by Margarete Schlegel, has the hots for Hugo. Anni takes the place of fellow worker on the shift ,played by Mathilde Sussin as Miss Fisher.Herman Thimig plays Hans Meier an air mail pilot who co worker with fellow worker Tobias played by Frtiz Camper. A young Hans Ritchter, a kid at that time may be 7? plays the son of the mother that Meier rents a room. Well it's when he is in a hurry to get to his plane he gets a ticket from Anni and forgets to give the stub to her and pulls her glove out and takes it with him. It come out of her wallet. It's only when during the annual outdoor Ubahn workers dance,in the woods, that in a rain storm, Meier end s up landing in the park and he and Anni meet ,it's love at first sight.Later on at the ticket office a business man forget his change,General Director O.f.' Pieper. She holler to him about missing his change. He offers it to her but she says no. He flirts with her and give him his card, She tears it up.One scene she and Hans are riding a Taxi looking at the department stores furniture, Babies stuff , cars, as they are Planning their future as he goes to his job. When she goes back to work she worried cause he doesn't make enough. So she takes advantage of the business card. Another politically incorrect offense. The director is a cigarette manufacturer,Tabu. She goes up their thinking she's interest in him. While Hans and his pal just lost their plane job. Because they were late due to to the rain. Anni is trying to convince The director to hire him to advertise his cigarettes through his plane.Inspite of his disappointments he agrees. While Papa tells Hans that She went out with that business man. This gets Hans Jelious. So he spies on her and thinks the worst. Then at home later, with a young Hans Ritchter and his Land lady mother, played by Margarete Kupfer, he gets a letter to come to the cigarette factory for the job. He gets it. Angry at Anni, thinking she's going with this business man, he ignores her and returns her glove, that he kept as a good luck charm. She doesn't know what's going on . Until he does his first job, thats when he finds out that Anni got it for him and she did not have the affair with the old man. This makes him happy. So before he illegally Lands on the city to pick her up and taker her with him on the plane. He Spell in German ,in the sky ,how much he loves her. Ich liebe diech . This was a happy movie. The print is digital but it has a few scratches. But it's clear. Available at warfilms.com 08/26/11. 08/26/11 Made a mistake on the Wachnau news. The British did not blow up a Nazi camp.On their retreat they blew a bridge up.
