A farce from Broadway, many good scenes but not sustained
psteier16 May 2000
Norma Martin (Clara Bow) is an American movie star in France trying to avoid the attention of men. Going to visit a friend in Southern France, she finds herself "married" to a playboy song writer Ralph Forbes (Larry Charters) she hadn't yet met. Some of his lady friends then show up.

Some very good sequences, but also some flat spots. Her "husband's" house is very Hollywood deco and some of the costumes are very good.

Ridiculous Story, Fantastic Cast
Maliejandra1 September 2021
Clara Bow was a tremendous personality who Paramount relied upon to make money with their bad scripts. This is another example of that trend. Luckily the rest of the cast is very good too, so the film is fun, but if you begin to examine the plot, it all crumbles.

Clara is a movie star who misses her train at a stop, along with Skeets Gallagher, who is masquerading as his friend, a famous composer (Ralph Forbes). The two wind up married because they don't speak the language, and rather than immediately remedy the situation, Clara goes with it, and her new husband does too, even though he has only just met her, and has a harem of women waiting in the wings. Charlie Ruggles is a friend who wants to take a nap. The grand finale is a well-timed bedroom farce with slamming doors and hidden guests.

I saw this very rare film screened at Capitolfest in 2021.

Average Comedy, 30s Style - Her Wedding Night
arthur_tafero6 October 2022
Made in an era where you had to be married to have sex, or you were considered a loose woman, Her Wedding Night is a farce comedy that highlights an American movie star (not a big stretch for the IT girl) visiting France to escape from her fans in America. Larry Charters, a B actor from the 30s then complicates matters by getting her involved in a fictional marriage. He is a playboy songwriter (great occupation if you can find the work). There are, of course, even more complications from some of Larry's current lady friends. Some decent scenes, but not long enough to keep our interest. Only fans of Clara Bow will want to see this one.

Warning: Spoilers
Uneven comedy that doesn't get really funny until the end of the picture. Beforehand there's some funny sequences and a lot of tedious business. It stars Clara Bow and Charlie Ruggles (they're funny) and Ralph Forbes (he's not). It takes place in France and the gist of the plot is trafficky and convoluted; Bow is trying to avoid fans and Forbes is a bon vivant song writer. He has lots of old flames who come to his flat to pester him and Bow somehow ends up there, along with Ruggles and another woman.

Towards the end the picture becomes a bedroom farce and is pretty funny, with people dashing in and out of each others bedrooms. We've seen it before, with doors opening and closing just as one leaves and another enters, but it's done very well here. Otherwise it's a long wait for the payoff. This played at Capitolfest, Rome NY, 8/14/21.

******6/10 - Website no longer prints my star rating.
