Andy Kaufman alive? Or Andy Kaufman hoax? New York City-born comedian Andy Kaufman, little known outside the United States but well-remembered in the U.S. by those who watched the late ’70s / early ’80s television series Taxi, is alive, married, and has a (previously unknown) grown daughter who goes by the name of McCoy. Well, if — and that’s a big if (or perhaps a small one, considering people’s willful gullibility and/or downright stupidity) — you believe the story reported in numerous outlets in the last couple of days: Andy Kaufman may have faked his own death of lung cancer at age 35 in 1984 so he could escape the limelight. (Photo: Andy Kaufman) At the New York-based Andy Kaufman Awards last Monday night, November 11, 2013, a woman claiming to be Kaufman’s daughter — calling herself "McCoy" (reportedly the name Kaufman used when checking himself into hospitals) — appeared on stage with Michael Kaufman,...

Several shorts directed by film pioneer Georges Méliès, played by Ben Kingsley in Martin Scorsese's well-received Hugo, will be featured throughout January 2012 at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum's Edison Theater in Fremont, Calif. The Méliès screenings will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 21, and 28. On Jan. 7, the Edison Theater will show Méliès' 1910 short The Doctor's Secret prior to the main feature, the William S. Hart 1916 classic Western Hell's Hinges, which also features Clara Williams (excellent in the highly recommended The Italian) and Louise Glaum, a film vamp who four years later would star in Sex. Musical accompaniment by Frederick Hodges. On Jan. 21, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum will celebrate "seven years of showing great films" with a screening of future two-time Oscar winner Lewis Milestone's 1928 The Garden of Eden. The romantic comedy stars one of the great beauties of the silent era, Corinne Griffith,...

Some new casting has been underway for Alex Proyas‘ Paradise Lost, which already stars Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, Benjamin Walker as Michael, and Djimon Hounsou as Abdiel. First, Variety reports on Casey Affleck joining the project in the role of Gabriel.
The original poem by John Milton put the angel on God’s side (as did that book, The Bible), pitting him against Lucifer and his various cronies of evil. Variety points out that this is one of his few protagonist roles in some time, with much of his recent work casting him as a villain. I, personally, don’t see it in those terms, since he’s a good enough actor to let me accept him in any role. All the leads that have signed on so far could be considered respected, and Affleck is no different; no matter how this turns out, at least one thing should work.

"The Book of Mormon," the religion-lampooning musical from "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, dominated the 2011 Tony Award nominations and awards. And when time came for the crass, controversial but universally-celebrated show, we wondered what tune they would choose to highlight.
And the winner? "I Believe." An earnest ditty song by star Andrew Rannells, "Believe" sums up "Mormon" quite nicely -- while explaining a few interesting particulars about the Mormon faith.
Here are our five biggest revelations about Mormon beliefs, as sung to us by Rannells:
1. Ancient Jews built boats and sailed to America
2. God has a plan for all of us -- and that plan involves Mormons getting their own planet
3. The current President of The Church, Thomas Monson, speaks directly to god
4. In 1978 God changed his mind about black people
5. The Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri
... That's more than we learned in five seasons' worth of "Big Love.
