- Beverly Calhoun of New Jersey accompanies her cousin Oscar, who is the heir to the throne of the small (fictitious) country of Graustark. On the way, Oscar is waylaid in a skiing accident, and Beverly must go on in his place. After being rescued from an ambush by a goatherd named Dantan, she assigns him to be her bodyguard. There are many awkward complications due to Beverly needing to conceal her gender, while also wanting to court Dantan as a woman, and fend off the villainous men and women of the court. Finally the real Prince Oscar arrives, and things are sorted out.—Rodney
