East Indian prince Har Dyal Rutton promises his dying father to lead a revolt against English rule. However, his occidental sympathies prompt him to flee to the U.S. and live in obscurity. While in exile, Har Dyal Rutton meets his American doppelganger, David Amber, whom he persuades to assume his throne in India. The prince is reminded of his oath by a Hindu messenger, but he remains defiant and is mortally wounded. In India, David falls in love with Sophia Farrell, daughter of a British colonel. Anti-British rebels Salig Singh and Princess Nairaini discover David's true identity and plan to usurp the throne. Sophia is abducted and taken to the Temple of the Bronze Bell, where David denounces the rebellion. Just as the fanatics are about to kill Sophia and David, British troops arrive.
