The film's in good shape....just not a lot of laughs.

"Ashtray from the Steerage" is an oddly named comedy starring Billy Bevan and Louise Fazenda. Sadly, while the film has recently been restored and looks pretty good, for a comedy it doesn't have a ton of laughs in this Mack Sennett production.

Billy and Louise play immigrants who have come to the United States to start a new life and act as caretakers for a rich woman's child. On the boat is a smuggler who is trying to sneak a single bottle of Scotch into the US, as it is during the Prohibition era and alcohol is forbidden.

The problem with this one is it just isn't all that funny. The finale also makes little sense...as the crook was only trying to sneak in a single bottle of booze.
