Old Dad- Lost Silent Film
PamelaShort4 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Virginia Bretton ( Myrtle Stedman ) has decided a opera career is more important than her husband and daughter, so she leaves them. Mr. Bretton ( John Sainpolis ) affectionately called "Old Dad" showers his daughter Daphne ( Mildred Harris ) with plenty of material luxuries, but she lacks personal attention. The girl gets into trouble at boarding school when Richard Wiltoner ( George Stewart ) is found in her room, although the circumstances are innocent, they are both expelled. Her father believes they did no wrong and he sends Daphne to the Adirondacks and decides to hire Richard into his business. Daphne soon meets roguish Sheridan Kaire ( Irving Cummings ) and he finally convinces the girl to elope with him. Her father discovers he is a bigamist and orders the marriage annulled. But a happy ending prevails for all, as Mrs. Bretton returns to her family and Daphne and Richard discover they are in love and marry.

Old Dad is a familiar drama story with the routine happy ending. However, in real life for actress Mildred Harris, her marriage to Charlie Chaplin was already on the rocks, when this film was produced by Chaplin-Mayer Pictures Company and released in November 1920. For those familiar with silent film stars, George Stewart was the brother of actresses Anita Stewart and Lucille Lee Stewart. Sadly, Old Dad remains on the list of lost silent films.
