Film historians believe that Thomas H. Ince originally planned to film this for Keystone but changed it to Triangle, a company he helped to co-found. The original title was "D'Artagnan" as this version of the story focused on him more than the other Musketeers. When the Film Distributors League reissued this on a 'States Rights' basis in 1920 they changed the name to the better known "The Three Musketeers". This would be a year before the Douglas Fairbanks movie by that same name. It is possible they had knowledge of Fairbanks' production and hoped chase in on the success. Only the re-issue "The Three Musketeers" version survives,
