- When rich civil engineer Robert Penfield goes to a small Quaker town in Pennsylvania to supervise a job, he meets Patience, who soon falls in love with him, but Robert is engaged to Edith, who plans to marry him for his money only. To remain close to Robert, Patience returns with him to the city to take a job as his mother's secretary. After Robert and Edith's wedding, and following the birth of their child, Patience takes care of the baby much more enthusiastically than Edith does; in fact, Edith is preoccupied with Paul Dunstan, a former suitor who wasn't rich enough to marry her, but who has since inherited a fortune. Finally, the couple elope, but they both die when Paul's yacht sinks. After the accident, Robert realizes that he loves Patience, and marries her.—Pamela Short
- Friend Patience is a sweet little girl who has spent all her days in a delightfully secluded Quaker village but felt the impulse of greater things and in her modest way she yearns for a broader life. Her father, Samuel Larabee, has chosen a gentle soul as a fitting husband for her: Friend John, whose complete negativity wears upon her nerves. In his feeble way John tries to make love to Patience, but she cannot respond, and they are not actually betrothed. Meanwhile, bridge builder Robert Penfield has allowed himself to become engaged to New York society girl Edith, largely because their mothers so willed it and he was too busy to think much about it. Penfield is commissioned to build a bridge at Amity Corner, Patience's home. As her father is the town's financial councilman, Penfield calls at the house to discuss matters with him and meets Patience, in whom he takes only a passing interest, but her charm soon captivates him. Before Edith became engaged to Penfield she had been pursued by Paul Dunstan, who takes advantage of Penfield's absence to resume his pursuit of Edith. Patience's father's sudden death leaves her penniless and Penfield induces his mother to take her as her social secretary. Patience is terribly shocked when she learns that Penfield is engaged, for she is in love with him although he has never actually made love to her. She lives through infinite torture on his wedding day, but when he and Edith become parents, Patience becomes the baby boy's almost-constant companion; Edith neglects him in favor of stepping out with Paul, and Penfield is too busy to notice her gradual hardening. Penfield accidentally stumbles upon the truth, but not until Edith has become jealous of the Quaker girl and discharged her. Returning unexpectedly, Penfield discovers his wife's whole miserable conduct and orders her out of the house, together with Paul. The two culprits depart upon a yacht which is wrecked. Patience has returned to Amity Corners to find John married and the heartbroken girl is only saved from giving way to her anguish by the arrival of Penfield, whose thoughts have constantly refused to turn from her since the day he discovered that he was a free man.—Moving Picture World synopsis
