- College student Mala has dreams of becoming a Bollywood movie actress; her dreams began materializing into reality when she is approached by Mr. Sharma and his assistant Mr. Verma who promises to take her to the way of stardom. Unfortunately when her parents learn about this they oppose to this and decide to arrange her marriage so that she will be restricted to go above her limits forcing her to approach Sharma for advice who asks her to run-away with huge sums of cash. Greed over comes the duo resulting in Sharma killing Verma; Mala who witness this is on the run for her life; she then board a bus that run between Bombay to Goa without realizing where this journey will end. But her life remains threaten as Sharma has not given up his searches for her.

When Vicky's dad, Damodar, has a heart attack and is advised to take bed-rest for two months, Vicky fills in his father's shoes, has a confrontation with a senior employee and union leader, Bipinlal Pandey, which results in a strike. His father intervenes, asks Vicky to apologize to Bipinlal, which Vicky does, and everything returns to normal. Vicky confides about his humiliation with Somu, and both conspire to teach Bipinlal a lesson. As a result, Somu accompanies Vicky to Calcutta, gets a job as a laborer in his mill, befriends his fellow-workers, gets some monetary relief to injured workers, amongst other benefits, is elected as the union leader replacing Bipinlal. With Somu as the union leader and Vicky as the boss there is no stopping these two - until Damodar finds out and decides to put a stop to Vicky being influenced by Somu's middle-class ideas and ideals. Damodar starts a chain of events that get out of control, events that may well see the death of one of the friends at the hands of the other. Will Vicky's and Somu's friendship see them through or will it also be a casualty?

Years later a young man enters the lives of the Singhs claiming to be Chimpoo; while Maharaj and his wife, Rukmini is happy in having Chimpoo back; they are unaware that this young man is actually a convict, Badal who is impersonating Chimpoo with the intention of pocketing their wealth. Situations change Badal and he decides to reveal his true identity to the Singhs who also promises to re-unite the family with their son, Chimpoo.
- A man (Amitabh Bachchan) is found wounded on railway tracks and when he awakens he has no memory of who he is and doesn't remember anything about his life. Six years later he is living with a wealthy couple and is now named Naresh Dutt. One day he begins to regain his memory when he watches a film and realizes that the actress in the film is related to him somehow. It is then that he discovers the actress in the film is none other than his wife Rekha Roy (Rekha). He finds out that she is now a very successful film actress changing her name to Sunita Devi and her manager is none other than Ranjeet Malik (Prem Chopra) who used to be his best friend. In flashbacks he remembers that his real name is Amit Roy and Ranjit was the one who attempted to kill him six years earlier by throwing him off the train he was traveling on with Rekha. Amit also discovers that his young son who is now 10 years old has been sent to a boarding school and sets out a plan to regain custody of his son. First however he plans on taking revenge against Ranjit. Amit comes up with a plan to re-enter Rekha and Ranjit's lives by disguising himself as a film producer. He meets with Rekha and Ranjit and offers Rekha the opportunity to act in his new film titled Do Anjaane. Rekha and Ranjit grow suspicious of Naresh Dutt as they start to realize that he bears a striking resemblance to Rekha's supposedly deceased husband Amit Roy and the storyline of his film eerily mirrors Rekha's past life. Will she discover the true identity of Naresh Dutt? and what revenge has Amit/Naresh got planned for Ranjit?

During this period Shekar starts developing liking for Neela but she is attracted to Avinash,Shekar meets Avinash as he is the only one who can convince Neela for marriage.Avinash convinces Neela by reveling the truth that he is suffering from blood cancer and has very less time to live.A broken heart ed Neela marries Shekar but still has soft corner for Avinash as a friend leaving Shekar suspicious.
- Renukadevi is widowed and the mother of a son named Ram. Her husband had indulged in all possible vices, and passed away unexpectedly. Her father-in-law, Rai, does not want Ram to repeat his father's mistakes, and teaches him all the positive values of the Hindu religion, in particular the contents of the Holy Book "Geeta". As a result, Ram refrains from all known vices, is an expert in yogic exercises, decides to live the life of a celibate, and refuses to marry anyone. When Rai passes away, Renuka asks Ram to fulfill his grandfather's last wishes, one of which was to get married. She even arranges his introduction to Aarti, an attractive young woman. But Ram is convinced that marriage is not for him. Renuka is overjoyed when her estranged brother, Gopinath, and his son, Rakesh, return from abroad. With their help she hopes to get Ram marries with Aarti. Then things get complicated when Rakesh falls in love with Aarti. Ram leaves town to attend to business, and circumstances propel Renuka to will her entire estate to Rakesh and change his name to Bharat, with the blessings of a renowned saint named Ishwar Baba. After this ceremony, the people around Renuka start showing their true colors, and after an open-palmed stinging slap from Aarti, Renuka realizes that her place in this house is now worse than that of a lowly servant. Renuka now finds out that Aarti, Gopinath, and Rakesh are not who they claim to be, but will this realization be enough to reverse the order of events, or does fate have something even worse in store for Renuka?
- Tells the story of newly weds Hamid and Salma. They move into a rental flat next door to the local red light district. The flat had been the former home of a well known mujra and qawali singer, Shamshad. Men still come to the door in the hope of seeing Shamshad and do not seem too put out by seeing Salma despite her protestations. The couple struggle to live within the bounds of their own moral code while the earnings of prostitution seem to be flaunted around them. Hamid gets more and more angry and seemingly unable to reconcile his morality with the immorality of the world and at one point beats his wife and then rapes her making her into a 'whore' of his fantasy. The story here bears resemblance to the later 'Ek Chadar Maili Si' by the same director and seems to explore the complex world of women and sexuality as viewed by Indian men: mother, goddess, whore. This film also explores the ethos of prostitution in its reality and as a metaphor for the outside world.

Abdullah overcomes his fears of bringing up a Hindu boy, and looks after Krishna as his own. Then Khaleel's Magician informs him that he is going to die at the hands of Krishna, just as Bhagwan Shri Krishna was known to have slain Kans, his maternal uncle, so also will Khaleel's life end at this Krishna's hands. Angered at this, Khaleel sets out to kill Krishna. He attacks Abdullah, abducts Krishna and readies him for a sacrifice, that will get rid of any threat against him. Will fate intervene to save Krishna, or will Khaleel succeed in sacrificing him?

Unfortunately, Harnam's child is killed, and his wife, devastated, curses Bhavani and his family. Subsequently, Bhavani is separated from his family due to heavy rains and floods, and decides to turn himself in to the police, and is sent to prison. His wife has been unable to locate any of their children. Ram and Laxman are taken in by two bandits, and turn to a life of crime, and ironically Ganga is adopted by Harnam Singh. Years later, Bhavani is released from prison, and comes to meet his wife, and is devastated to know that he may never get to see his children again. Bhavani starts living a honest life, not knowing that his estranged sons are leading a life of crime, and that his daughter is now living with the family, whose son he killed.
- In order to save her grandfather's mansion, Rama agrees to marry a much older male, Madanlal, who decides to sell some artifacts to prospective wealthy buyers, including Mr. and Mrs. Rai. The sale is hampered by heavy rains and the entry of a traveling painter-singer, Awara, as well as four bandits, including Baldev Singh, who is wanted by the police for the brutal murder of his wife.

- A family drama with a special focus on two generations of the Chopra family. Dinanath Chopra lives in a small tenement with his wife, and two sons Baldev, and Chandramohan. Dinanath re-finances his house in order to get Baldev to study further and be a doctor, and also gets him married with Rekha who comes from a very wealthy family. Chandramohan studies in college, and has a sweetheart in the form of the gorgeous Asha. Asha lives with her mom, and dad, a sort of quack. Differences in the Baldev emerge and multiply. Baldev and Rekha move to their palatial house. The birth of a baby boy to Rekha does lighten things up a bit, but not for long. Dinanath loses his eyesight in an accident and becomes blind. Chandramohan goes out of town to look for employment, leaving his sick mother and blind father at the mercy of an uncaring daughter-in-law, and eventually the older couple are forced to leave Baldev's house. Chandramohan returns and is unable to locate them. What will be the fate of his parents in an unfriendly, cold, and heartless city?

- Deep Sharma lives a very poor lifestyle with his widowed mom, Radha, and a younger brother, Ashok, who he would like to become a Judge. Then he is asked to write stories about an imaginary bandit, Sangram Singh, which he agrees to do so under the pen name of his friend, Jani Babu. Shortly thereafter he gets very popular, so much so that his girlfriend, Lajwanti's dad, the former King Maheshwari Prasad, consents to let him marry his daughter. Then things get complicated when a bandit who calls himself Sangram Singh goes on a crime-spree throughout the region. The Police launch a man-hunt and their investigations take them to Jani Babu, and after questioning him, they find out that the writer is Deep. Before they could arrest Deep, Maheshwari is killed in his home, and the Police are notified that Deep is the killer - and the witness identifying Deep as the killer is none other than Lajwanti herself. The questions that come to mind are did Deep really kill Maheshwari; and has he been living a double life?

- Rajesh Narain lives a poor lifestyle in a small town in British India along with his brother, Brijesh, Bhabi, and a niece, Munni. He even spurns Kamini, who ends up getting married to a man of her dad's choice. While on the run from the law, assisted by a Pathan truck-driver, Sher Khan, Rajesh finds shelter in the house of his childhood friend, newly-wed Superintendent of Police, Dheeraj Kumar - not knowing that he will soon be confronted by an embittered Kamini, who is the bride of Dheeraj; Sher Khan, who has been arrested and is being tortured may soon reveal Rajesh's hiding place, and from Dheeraj himself when he finds out that his best friend loves his bride.
- Rohit, Whiskey, and Kumar (Rajendra Kumar, Rajendra Nath, and Prem Chopra respectively) are childhood friends. While travelling to his estate in the company of Whiskey, Rohit meets with beautiful Neena (Sadhana), and falls in love with her. Subsequently, he meets with her father (Raj Mehra) where they are properly introduced, and she too falls in love with him. Unknowingly, Kumar also sends his proposal for marriage to Neena, but Neena rejects it. Kumar is offended and shortly before the marriage of Neena and Rohit, molests Neena. Rohit and Kumar become enemies, have a fight and Kumar loses sight in his left eye. Feeling that she is not worthly of Rohit anymore, Neena refuses to marry Rohit. Will Rohit and Neena ever get together again? Will they continue to be haunted by Kumar?

- While studying in medical college Arun Kumar Mathur (Shashi Kapoor) has a misunderstanding over a love letter with Kavita Kapoor (Sadhana), and must leave the college, much to his dismay. Kavita later finds out that it was not Arun's fault, but Arun has already left town. Arun's marriage is arranged with Saroj Chowdhary (Seema Deo), who also happens to be a distant relative of Kavita. When Arun loses his vision in an accident, Saroj is unable to go to take care of him, and Kavita takes her place. Unwilling to reveal her identity, Kavita let's him think it is Saroj, not her. She learns that he still hates and despises her. Soon it will be time to take bandages off his eyes, and he will be able to see again, much to the dread of Kavita.
- Arun takes on the responsibility for the care of his step-mother (Sujatha) and step-sisters on the death of his father. Losses in business result in the sale of their palatial home, and Arun together with his wife (Neema - Shabana Azmi) move to a smaller house. Tensions escalate between Neema and Sujatha, even as Arun struggles financially to meet the needs of his family. Things come to a head when she sees her husband eating sweets from the hand of a beautiful woman doctor in a restaurant. Neema leaves her matrimonial home together with her son Abhinandan. Neema sells her jewelry to support her brother's education, without any return on her investment. She and Abhinandan live a life of genteel poverty on the charity of another brother. Divorce court judgment leaves Arun dissatisfied and resentful and he does not meet his son for years. Meanwhile, Neema feeling wronged and cheated by Arun thinks he has remarried and has a new child. The thread of the story begins to unravel when Abhinandan comes to Bombay for higher education. Does Abhinandan hate his father? Does he ride his Rajdoot-Bobby motorcycle from Bombay to Nasik? What happens when Neema and Arun come face to face, after many years in common grief, worry and concern for the well being of a loved one is to be watched.
- Manish, a college professor, takes in Chaitali, a thief, and offers to support her in living an honest life. Chaitali lies that she is a widow when she isn't even married since she is the daughter of a fugitive and is brought up as a courtesan by her protective stepmother. She lies to hide her background, which leads to more lies. Manish's brother Avinash is a lawyer practicing from home, and his bedridden wife Prabha accuses Chaitali of stealing a valuable necklace to which Chaitali quickly confesses. Before that, Chaitali, Manish, and his mother had visited their family Guru for his guidance where Chaitali had revealed her life story to Manish. Out on the streets, she takes up dancing, which Manish misinterprets as her slap on his generosity. She decides to return money for the stolen necklace with earnings from her dancing but this is interpreted as arrogance and she is thrown out of the house. Soon, Avinash tells the truth to Manish as to why Chaitali confessed to stealing the jewelry.

She goes to Jwalaprasad for help and finds his wife at home who gives her money but on a condition. Manju should accept unmarried Lata's illicit child as her own and should never disclose the truth to anyone. Helpless Manju agrees. But that money could not save her father who succumbs to his illness. Manju leaves the vicinity. Rajesh finds her after a couple of years with the kid and accuses her of deceiving him. He turns alcoholic. Jwalaprasad finds Manju and brings her at his home to serve Mrs.Jwalaprasad, who is a dumb handicap now because of an accident. Jwalaprasad asks Manju to convince Rajesh to marry Lata. Upon Manju's insistence, Rajesh agrees. During marriage rituals, Lata's house catches fire and Lata & her kid are trapped in. Rajesh saves them but Lata dies of an injury when she tries to stop Rajesh. Shocked Mrs.Jwalaprasad regains her voice and tells all about her atrocities on Manju, to everyone. Rajesh and Manju are united again.
- Anjana lives a wealthy lifestyle with her dad, Dwarka Nath, in a hilly region in India. When she returns home after several years, she finds that her dad has become more strict and a disciplinarian, and even has his erring employees and villagers flogged. Then she meets with local villager, Jhumroo, and both fall in love with each other. Jhumroo takes her home to introduce her to his mom, Kamla, who approves of her instantly. When Dwarka comes to know about this, he is enraged, and quickly announces her marriage with his Manager, Ramesh. Jhumroo is heart-broken and goes to meet with Anjana, who does tell him that she loves him, but must obey her father. What Jhumroo and Anjana do not know is that she is not Dwarka's daughter, but is the daughter of Kamla, and abducted at a very young age. The question remains what impact will this have on their lives when they find that they are brother and sister, and who actually did abduct Anjana?
- Bharat Prasad Sharma lives a middle-class lifestyle along with his brother in a small town in India. His brother falls in love with Saraswati and both get intimate. Then Saraswati gets pregnant and both get married. Bharat does not approve of Saraswati and breaks off all relations, even dividing the house into two. Now Bharat is the Deputy Superintendent of Police and is assigned to take charge of a Police Station in a small town that is being ruled by a criminal don and soon-to-be Member of the Legislative Assembly, Dharam Kohli. Immediately upon his arrival he dramatically suspends Inspector Thakur, and arrests Dharam - only to release him due to medical reasons. A frustrated Bharat volunteers to go under cover and expose Dharam. He rents a room with John Fernandes, falls in love with co-tenant, Prabha, and marries her. With Prabha and John's help he gathers enough evidence to arrest Dharam little knowing that Prabha has a secret she kept from him - namely that she was in love with Dharam's goon, Mahesh, who is secretly blackmailing her and now wants her to hand over all evidence to him.
