- A Free French officer during the Second World War, flying on bomber raids out of West Yorkshire, Roy continued to serve in the French forces until 1953. He then retired (with the rank of colonel) in protest against the French savageries in the Indo-Chinese war. Having already published a prize-winning memoir about his war experiences as well as poetry, he became a journalist and playwright as well. One of his great achievements is a sequence of six novels under the general title of "Les Chevaux du Soleil".
- Romain Rolland was born on 29 January 1866 in Clamecy, Nièvre, France. He was a writer, known for Xiang gui chun qing (1960), Miseraretaru tamasii (1953) and La novela mensual (1972). He was married to Maria Pavlovna Kudachova, Marie Mikhaïlova Cuvillier Koudachev and Clotilde Bréal. He died on 30 December 1944 in Vézelay, Yonne, France.
