- José López Portillo y Pacheco was born on June 16, 1920 in Distrito Federal. He was the only man born of the marriage between Jose Lopez-Portillo y Weber and Refugio Pacheco. He studied law at UNAM and, for some years, was a professor at that institution. During the government of Luis Echeverría was undersecretary of Patrimonio Nacional, director of the CFE and, since 1973, finance minister. On September 20, 1975 was elected PRI candidate for the presidency of the Republic.
With 17,695,043 votes, he won the elections and in December 1, 1976 he assumes the presidency. His term was marked at international level by establishing relations with the government of King Juan Carlos I of Spain. In January 1979, Pope John Paul II visited Mexico.
Aged 83 years and victim of a cardiac complication caused by pneumonia that had sent him to hospital, José López Portillo died in Mexico City at 20:15 am on Tuesday, February 17, 2004. His remains rest in the Pantheon Military in the Distrito Federal. - Composer
