In 1980 Ian sang in BBC Rising Stars. He also performed with Andre Previn and the LSO at Royal Festival Hall. In October 1985 he was cast several parts in Les Miserables at the Barbican Theatre and features on the cast recording. Les Misérables moved to the Palace Theatre and Ian worked on the show until just a few days before he died in February 1987.
