Best-known for her surreal and digressive stand-up, British comedian and actor Eddie Izzard was born on February 7, 1962, in Aden, Yemen, where her English parents -- Dorothy Ella, a nurse and midwife, and Harold John Izzard, an accountant -- worked for British Petroleum.
Izzard worked as a street performer and in smaller comedy venues throughout the mid-to-late 1980s; her big break came when she appeared in Hysteria III, a 1991 AIDS fundraiser held at the London Palladium, and did her now-famous "Raised by wolves" sketch. After that, she drew bigger and bigger audiences, and in 1993 hired the Ambassadors Theatre in London's West End for the first of many successful solo shows. With Eddie Izzard: Live at the Ambassadors (1993), she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award (outstanding achievement) and won her first British Comedy Award for top stand-up comedian. She returned to the West End the next year with her second solo show, Eddie Izzard: Unrepeatable (1994), and soon thereafter made her West End debut in a drama, as the lead in the world premiere of David Mamet's "The Cryptogram" with Lindsay Duncan; her success led to her second starring role, in "900 Oneonta".
Izzard appeared in 1995 as the title character in Christopher Marlowe's groundbreaking "Edward II". In 1996, she made her big-screen debut alongside Bob Hoskins and Robin Williams in The Secret Agent (1996); she also staged another solo show, Eddie Izzard: Definite Article (1996), for which she received her second British Comedy Award. In 1998, Izzard appeared in another film, Velvet Goldmine (1998), with Ewan McGregor, and also staged her breakthrough solo U.S. show, Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill (1998) which aired on HBO and earned Izzard two Emmy Awards. Izzard next took on the challenge of appearing as Lenny Bruce in Peter Hall's West End production of "Lenny."
Izzard started 2000 touring the world with Eddie Izzard: Circle (2002) and continued to act in films, among them The Criminal (1999); Shadow of the Vampire (2000) with John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe; and Peter Bogdanovich's The Cat's Meow (2001), in which she played Charles Chaplin. She returned to the stage, in London and later in New York (her Broadway debut), with A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (2002), a version of which was televised.

An oddly fascinating bloke with prominent bony cheeks and rawboned figure, Peter William (Pete) Postlethwaite was born on February 16, 1946 and was a distinguished character actor on stage, TV and film. Growing up the youngest of four siblings in a Catholic family in Warrington, Lancashire (near Liverpool) in middle-class surroundings to working-class parents, he attended St Mary's University (London). However, while completing his studies, he developed an interest in theatre, to the chagrin of his father, who wanted his children to find secure positions in life.
A drama teacher initially at a Catholic girls convent school, he decided to follow his acting instincts full-time and gradually built up an impressive array of classical stage credits via repertory, including the Bristol Old Vic Drama School, and in stints with Liverpool Everyman, Manchester Royal Exchange and the Royal Shakespeare Company. By the 1980s he was ready to branch out into film and TV, giving a startling performance as a wife abuser in the Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988).
By 1993 he had crossed over into Hollywood parts and earned his first Oscar nomination for his superb role as Daniel Day-Lewis' father in In the Name of the Father (1993). Other quality roles came his way with The Usual Suspects (1995), Brassed Off (1996), and Amistad (1997). He did fine work on television in Sharpe's Company (1994), Lost for Words (1999), and The Sins (2000). Postlethwaite worked equally both in the UK and abroad, and avoided the public limelight for the most part, except for occasional displays of political activism.
Postlethwaite lived quietly out of the spotlight in England and continued on in films with roles in The Shipping News (2001), The Limit (2004), Dark Water (2005), The Omen (2006), Ghost Son (2007) and Solomon Kane (2009). In 2010, he was seen in Clash of the Titans (2010), Inception (2010) and The Town (2010).
Postlewaite died on January 2, 2011, at age 64, of pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and son, and by his daughter from a prior relationship.- Producer

This owl-faced comic actor enjoyed his first featured film role in the RKO production Too Many Girls (1940), in which he reprised the role of "JoJo Jordan" that he had played in the Broadway stage version of that musical. (Into the pantheon of pop-music standards came one that Bracken had introduced in "Too Many Girls", the melancholy "I Didn't Know What Time It Was"). But the then 20-year-old Eddie Bracken was by no means new to show business in general or Hollywood in particular. He had played in vaudeville and performed in nightclubs by the time he was 9, and had just later appeared on screen in four of the Hal Roach "Our Gang" comedy two-reeler film shorts. It was on account of his appearances in musicals and comedies as a shy, giggling, clumsy, stammering, sentimental, self-effacing, would-be hero that Bracken achieved popularity, not to say star status, among movie audiences of the 1940s. The director Preston Sturges served up those attributes of Eddie Bracken particularly well in two of Sturges's more memorable comedies. As "Norval Jones" in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1943) (filmed in 1942; released 1944), Bracken portrays a man whose destiny others have foisted upon him. A certain "Trudy Kockenlocker" (played by Betty Hutton), having attended a party for military servicemen, later finds herself to be pregnant but has no recollection of who the father might be. So she persuades the always-befuddled Norval to take credit for the child and marry her. Somehow, Norval emerges a true hero in the end, but you'll have to see the film to discover why. As Norval Jones was physically unfit for military service, so also was "Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith", with Eddie Bracken in the role, in Preston Sturges's Hail the Conquering Hero (1944). Solely on the basis of his father's reputation as a World War I U.S. Marine hero, a group of saloon-hopping World War II-era U.S. Marines, led by a crusty senior-level sergeant (played to a tee by William Demarest), elevate the physical reject Truesmith into a modern, combat-decorated veteran, and then usher him into an election campaign for Truesmith's hometown mayoralty. The complications, including a love interest (in the person of actress Ella Raines, are by now well under way. As Eddie Bracken's age increased his popularity -- or perhaps that of the genre of film vehicles that was his forte -- decreased, and in 1953 he essentially retired from the screen, moving on to pursue theatrical ventures. But he would return to Hollywood eventually, and we have been fortunate to see him in character roles in theatrical and TV films through the 80's and 90's.- Actress

Buster Crabbe graduated from the University of Southern California. In 1931, while working on That's My Boy (1932) for Columbia Pictures, he was tested by MGM for Tarzan and rejected. Paramount Pictures put him in King of the Jungle (1933) as Kaspa, the Lion Man (after a book of that title but clearly a copy of the Tarzan stories). Publicity for this film emphasized his having won the 1932 Olympic 400-meter freestyle swimming championship and suggested a rivalry with Johnny Weissmuller. Producer Sol Lesser wanted Crabbe for an independent Tarzan the Fearless (1933), though he first had to get James Pierce to waive rights to the part already promised to him by his father-in-law, Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film was released as both a feature and a serial; most houses showed only the first serial episode, which critics panned as a badly organized feature. Just prior to the film's release, Crabbe married his college sweetheart and gave himself one year to either make it as an actor or start law school at USC. Paramount put him in a number of Zane Grey westerns, then Universal Pictures gave him the lead in very successful sci-fi serials (Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers) from 1936 to 1940. In 1940, he began a string of Billy the Kid westerns for low-budget (very low-budget) studio PRC. After World War II, he devoted much of his time to his swimming pool corporation and operation of a boys' camp in New York. In 1950, he made the serials Pirates of the High Seas (1950) and King of the Congo (1952). In addition, he was very active on television in the 1950s. In 1953, he hosted a local show in New York City that featured his serials. He played the title role in the adventure series Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion (1955). During television's "Golden Age", he had several "meaty" lead roles on such weekly anthology series as "Kraft Theater" ("Million Dollar Rookie") and "Philco Television Playhouse" ("Cowboy for Chris") He later returned to western features to play Wyatt Earp in Badman's Country (1958) and gave a stellar performance. Buster Crabbe died at age 75 of a heart attack on April 23, 1983.- Actor

Mahoney is of French and Irish extraction, with some Cherokee. At the University of Iowa, he was outstanding in swimming, basketball and football. When World War II broke out, he enlisted as a Marine fighter pilot and instructor. In Hollywood, he was a noted stunt man, doubling for Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and Gregory Peck. Gene Autry signed him for the lead in his 78-episode The Range Rider (1951) TV series. He tested to replace Johnny Weissmuller, as Tarzan but lost out to Lex Barker. In 1960, he played the heavy in Gordon Scott's Tarzan the Magnificent (1960), and his part there led Sy Weintraub to hire him as Scott's replacement. In his two Tarzan movies, he did all his own stunts. In Tarzan's Three Challenges (1963), he continued working in spite of dysentery, dengue fever and pneumonia. By this time, Weintraub was looking for a younger Tarzan, envisioning a future TV series. By mutual agreement, his contract with Mahoney was dissolved. After a couple of years regaining his strength and weight, Jock returned to making action films.- Actress

Michael McGreevey began his professional career at the age of seven, appearing in The Girl Most Likely (1957) with Jane Powell, the first of 18 films he would act in over the next 20 years. A successful child actor, Michael also appeared in over 100 television shows, including stints as a series regular on Riverboat (1959) (Burt Reynolds' first show) and guest-star appearances on such acclaimed series as Naked City (1958), Route 66 (1960) and three two-part specials for The Magical World of Disney (1954). At 18 years of age he enrolled in classes at UCLA while continuing his professional acting career, starring opposite Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum and Sally Field in The Way West (1967) (Field's first film), with David Niven in The Impossible Years (1968) and alongside Richard Widmark and Lena Horne in Death of a Gunfighter (1969), as well as guest-starring in numerous television shows (Mod Squad (1968), Love, American Style (1969)) and made-for-TV movies (including If Tomorrow Comes (1971) with Patty Duke).
Graduating from UCLA Film School with honors, he continued to work as an actor, but set his sights on one day moving behind the camera and trying his hand at writing, directing, and producing. While co-starring opposite Kurt Russell in a series of very successful movies for Disney (The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972), Snowball Express (1972) and The Strongest Man in the World (1975)) and making guest-star appearances on acclaimed television series like The Waltons (1972), Michael began writing. He was lucky enough to get his first professional writing assignment collaborating with his father, John McGreevey (Emmy Award; WGA Laurel Award) developing a three-hour movie for television about the Kennedy assassination entitled Ruby and Oswald (1978). A truly monumental television event, "Ruby and Oswald" was a ratings winner as well as a critical success. Michael continued writing on his own, branching out into series television, working on such shows as "The Waltons" with creator Earl Hamner Jr., Palmerstown, U.S.A. (1980) with Alex Haley and Norman Lear, Quincy M.E. (1976) and many others. Michael was nominated for an Emmy award for his teleplay of the ABC Afterschool Special, The Celebrity and the Arcade Kid (1983). What started out as a freelance assignment writing one episode of Fame (1982), the NBC series based on the popular film, turned into three seasons (72 episodes) as writer, story editor and eventually producer. Having written more episodes than anyone else, Michael was the obvious choice to write the last "Fame" show, effectively closing the door on the School of the Arts and bringing the award-winning series to an end. After "Fame", Michael decided he needed a break from the grind of series television, and returned to writing long-form television, developing movies and mini-series for all the networks, including NBC's highest rated movie of the '194 season, Bonanza: The Return (1993). Michael returned to series television as the Supervising Producer of High Tide (1994) for the '95-'96 season and then assumed the same duties on the syndicated series, Tarzan: The Epic Adventures (1996), completing 22 episodes for the '96-'97 season. He realized another life-long dream by directing one of the "Tarzan" episodes. Having been bitten by the directing bug, Michael immediately took on another assignment, helming three episodes of the Fox Network's children series, Mowgli: The New Adventures of the Jungle Book (1998). The producers (Alliance, Kushner-Locke) were so pleased with his work on this demanding action/adventure series that they asked him to direct an independent feature based on the Kipling books, The Jungle Book: Search for the Lost Treasure (1998), starring Gary Collins and Michael Beck. Immediately after completing the film, McGreevey returned to television, executive-producing (as well as writing and directing) 26 one-hour episodes of the syndicated series Born Free (1998) (a continuation of the very popular movie based on Joy Adamson's extraordinary work with the lioness, Elsa, in Africa). Since finishing the series, Michael has co-written an action\thriller television movie and series pilot, "Endangered," and co-wrote the script for a big-budget adaptation of the L. Frank Baum classic, "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus." He is presently developing an original screenplay, "13 Weeks," a romantic comedy about working in series television, and shooting three documentaries entitled "Aging Without Symptoms," "Welcome to Eden," and "The Face of America."- Kylie Fausto Verzosa was born in Baguio City, Philippines.
