First, the facts: there is, at the time of writing, no hard evidence to suggest that actor Rose Ayling-Ellis has joined the cast of Doctor Who. The BBC has made no announcement. Actor and deaf campaigner Ayling-Ellis has not publicly responded to the suggestion that her recent exit from EastEnders will be followed up by a trip in the Tardis, as the new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor.
The rumour emerged on Monday the 22nd of August after Doctor Who fan Owen (@WhovianLife) Tweeted “I wonder if this could be for #DoctorWho?” alongside a quote from Ayling-Ellis saying that she was currently banned from talking about her next job. Speaking to The Mirror about what she had lined up after leaving EastEnders, Ayling-Ellis said “You will find out more at the end of this month. I’m not allowed to say anything!”

No Tim Gunn. No Heidi Klum. And a controversial first elimination that caused a ruckus when fans declared that the wrong designer was sent packing. Yes, according to longtime viewers of “Project Runway,” its return to Bravo for its 17th season had a decidedly bumpy beginning.
It was clear to many that sweet-natured designer Frankie Lewis was out of her league when her curvy model was falling out of her so-called body suit as she walked down the runway. But the two new judges — Elaine Welteroth, former editor of “Teen Vogue” and designer Brandon Maxwell, who has dressed both Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama — joined “Elle” editor-in-chief Nina Garcia, the lone survivor from previous incarnations, in opting to snip snooty Cavanagh Baker for a too-simple but at least wearable outfit.

This week’s challenge on Season 17 of “Project Runway” is to create a fabulous larger-than-life Elton John-style performance piece — presumably tied to the big-screen musical biopic “Rocketman,” due in theaters on May 31. It stars Taron Egerton, who will be singing Sir Elton’s songs himself and directed by Dexter Fletcher, who did “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
That means there will be a flock of semi-dressed male models roaming about in the workroom. No worries about those curvy models this week.

Fashion is fickle, so “Project Runway” always has its ups and downs, but throughout this season the person I feel has gotten the short end of the stick isn’t one of the designers, it’s one of the models. Kate has been subjected to one bad outfit after another, and it’s not because she’s incapable of wearing clothes. It’s because the designers seem incapable of dressing full-figured women.
This season’s models have diverse sizes, shapes, races and even gender identities (Mimi is the show’s first transgender model), but it has been a recurring theme all season: the designers are scared to death of curvy women. In the season premiere Kate was dressed by Frankie Lewis and ended up in an infamous blue body suit that was practically falling apart.

“Project Runway” is down to its final nine contestants … hey, nine is divisible by three, so why not have another team challenge? In “Blame it on Rio,” the designers split up into three teams to design mini-collections for celebrity client Morena Baccarin‘s Rio de Janeiro vacation. So who had a fantastic voyage, and who booked a flight back home? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The last team challenge was back in episode two, “The Future is Here,” when there were still 15 designers in the competition. The results were, shall we say, mixed. Tessa Clark, Sebastian Grey and Afa Ah Loo wowed the judges with their futuristic designs highlighting sci-fi body modifications, but Hester Sunshine drove her team crazy with her fabric madness, and the trio of Renee Hill, Frankie Lewis and Kovid Kapoor couldn’t communicate and ended up at the bottom,...

This week on “Project Runway,” the harshest and most senior judge on the show, “Elle’ magazine’s editor-in-chief Nina Garcia, revealed that she has developed an itch for contestant Hester Sunshine‘s kitsch, and that bodes well for the 34-year-old Santa Fe-based designer. Her unique — dare we say kooky — sensibility was a bit of a liability in the early episodes. Also holding Hester back was her lack of confidence in her own vision, a fall-out from being kicked out of the Parsons School of Design in her junior year there.
On the premiere, Hester seemed to be flailing after she regretted choosing plastic organza as her fabric, especially after she tried to iron it. She was partly responsible for her three-person team’s less-than-successful outfits for episode 2’s futuristic challenge. Mentor Christian Siriano damned the blue ensembles as being too bridesmaid. Still, Hester squeaked by both times as part of the “in” crowd of designers,...

After 10 years of following other people’s stories, Elaine Welteroth is finally telling her own.
Since leaving her post as the editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Welteroth has written a memoir, “More Than Enough,” that hits shelves this summer and has a new on-air job as one of three judges on the revamped “Project Runway” — along with Karlie Kloss and Christian Siriano, who replaced Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn.
Welteroth is used to breaking ground. At Teen Vogue, she served as the first black beauty editor before being promoted to the top of the masthead, making waves as the youngest and only the second black person to hold the title in Conde Nast history. Welteroth changed the tone of Teen Vogue. She is largely responsible for the publication’s pivot to politics, most notably during the 2016 presidential election. Those longtime devotees of “Project Runway” know that more women than men have won the fashion-forward reality competition show since it first aired in 2004 – 9 vs. 7.
But after three episodes of the show’s much-touted return to Bravo, it feels as if the male contestants have the edge over the female seamstresses. Consider this: The three eliminated players so far – Cavanagh Baker, Frankie Lewis and Nadine Ralliford — were all women. That is only partly mitigated by the fact that female designers were declared the winners on episodes 1 and 3, Tessa Clark and Hester Sunshine, while Sebastian Grey (above) won the futuristic challenge on episode 2.
Also consider, however, that six women have been ranked among the least favorite looks while three men have been in the bottom. The fate of contestants can shift from week to week depending on the challenge and whether it plays to their strengths. Hester struggled in Week 2 with...

The remodeled 17th season of “Project Runway” that is back on Bravo had a rough start according to Gold Derby readers. Long-time fans griped about how host Karlie Kloss and mentor Christian Siriano were no Heidi Klum or Tim Gunn. And that Frankie Lewis should have been cut on the first episode instead of designer Cavanaugh Baker. Their feelings were vindicated after Frankie failed to deliver on episode 2 and was told to vamoose.
Senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna were therefore happy to discuss the much-improved third episode of the season, “All the Rage.” The challenge of making a complete design, including accessories, from a single print fabric was far less ephemeral than the previous two tests.
As Daniel noted, “Sounds easy enough when you go to Mood and you have to find one fabric and you’re done. It turned out to be a much more dramatic challenge than I expected.

Nothing says drama like more than a dozen designers in a tight workroom. “Project Runway” season 17 has been full of conflict and controversy, and that’s just after two weeks. Were there any more fireworks in episode three, “All the Rage”? From that episode title, how could there not be? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
“All the Rage” tasked designers with creating complete head-to-toe looks with one pattern. Easy, right? All you need to find is one fabric when shopping at Mood. Then again, that increases the pressure to find just the right fabric. Choose poorly and your challenge could be over before it begins.

Hester Sunshine certainly stands out from the crowd after the first two episodes of “Project Runway,” but not always in a good way. Her exuberant attitude clashed with her teammates Garo Sparo and Nadine Ralliford last week in “The Future is Here,” and she has a tendency to pick fabrics she regrets. Despite the drama, she was safe in both previous challenges, but our readers suspect her time is up. Is the sun about to set on Sunshine?
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Sunshine is the likeliest to be eliminated tonight in episode three. She gets leading odds of 39/20 as of this writing. But since the team challenge is behind her, if anything does her in it might be another fabric mishap. When shopping for fabrics at Mood in the season premiere she foolishly chose plastic organza that she had never even worked with before. And...

Some people just don’t work well with others. Hester Sunshine has made a quick impression in the first two weeks of “Project Runway” season 17 with her exuberant personality, eccentric style and blue hair. But as she admitted last week in “The Future is Here,” teamwork isn’t her strong suit. She almost did her team in by forcing them to work around her obsession with tulle fabric. Her teammate Nadine Ralliford was fit to be tied, and the “Runway” fans we polled were decidedly on Team Nadine. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
When Sunshine was assigned to work with Garo Sparo and Ralliford to create looks inspired by futuristic sci-fi body augmentations, even Garo Sparo was worried about the group dynamic given Sunshine’s high-strung personality, and his fear was well founded. Sunshine spent a large portion of their design budget on tulle. Then halfway through...

“Project Runway” enters its third week of competition following two episodes of tears, tension and team turmoil that had multiple designers at their wits’ end. But a couple of contestants who were at the center of the drama weathered the storm and have actually risen in our predictions for who will win the entire competition: Garo Sparo and Renee Hill.
Garo Sparo was assigned to a wholly incompatible team last week with the excitable Hester Sunshine and the no-nonsense Nadine Ralliford. It seemed like they were destined for the bottom of the judges’ scores, but they made it through safely. However, only one of them got a bump in our predictions. According to the combined forecasts of Gold Derby users, Garo Sparo is now the front-runner to win the season with leading odds of 12/5 as of this writing. He knocks Ralliford down to second place; perhaps our readers think his...

Longtime fans of “Project Runway” know that more designing women than men have won the reality competition show since it premiered in 2004 – 9 vs. 7.
But while only two episodes have aired during the show’s much-touted return to Bravo, I am getting a premonition that the guys might have the edge this season. It’s true that Tessa Clark, the first week’s winner and the most out-spoken of the strongest team of three from last week’s weird futuristic challenge, seems to be the woman to beat right now. However, her male mates, Afa Ah Loo and Sebastian Grey – who took the prize this week – outdid themselves with the construction of their white outfits. Sebastian even sewed a cool handbag for Tessa’s model to carry.
But what to say about the team of Kovid Kapoor, Frankie Lewis (see both above) and Renee Hill? Frankie – who barely escaped elimination on...

“Project Runway” launched its 17th season with a controversial call when the judges eliminated Cavanagh Baker‘s competent look instead of Frankie Lewis‘s misshapen mess. Most of our readers thought the judges were hopelessly out of fashion when they made that decision. But Lewis faltered again in episode two, “The Future is Here,” and the judges weren’t about to give her a third chance after two fails in a row. And this time our readers overwhelmingly supported that choice. Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
“The Future is Here” was a team challenge that required the designers to create looks to showcase sci-fi body modifications. Lewis’s team had models augmented with chest feathers, but Lewis half covered her model’s feathers with a weird backwards jacket, and underneath was a basic black dress that made the judges even madder after...

There was plenty of excitement in the season 17 premiere of “Project Runway” with the show’s return to Bravo, a new host and mentor, new judges and a new crop of 16 designers vying for a prize package worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. So did things settle down as the 15 remaining contestants settled into the workroom in episode two, “The Future is Here,” or did the drama intensify? Find out below in our minute-by-minute blog with all the developments as they happen.
The season premiere had a controversial ending when Cavanagh Baker was eliminated for a bland black look instead of Frankie Lewis, whose bodysuit made of blue straps was practically falling off her model. New host Karlie Kloss and new judges Brandon Maxwell and Elaine Welteroth made a bad “First Impression” on some fans by eliminating the more competently constructed look. For these judges, apparently an epic fail is...

We’re not two weeks into “Project Runway’s” 17th season, and already the show has made lots of people angry. Specifically, many of our readers were mad that the judges eliminated Cavanagh Baker for a bland but competent design in the season premiere instead of Frankie Lewis for an ambitious but disastrously constructed bodysuit. Will Lewis survive for a second week? Our readers aren’t so sure.
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Lewis is the front-runner to be eliminated in tonight’s second episode with leading odds of 23/10. Maybe we’re wrong. Maybe Lewis just had extraordinarily bad luck in the first challenge and she’ll bounce back with consistently flawless designs from here on out. But it’s concerning that Lewis needed so much help just to get any kind of finished garment on her model.

Thursday’s 17th-season premiere of Bravo’s revived and remodeled “Project Runway” probably drew its share of curious fans wanting to know how the fashion competition might fare without its twin pillars of taste and discretion, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum. But based on our poll as well as online comments, many are vowing to make like former host Klum and say, “auf wiedersehen.”
The reason? The way they pitted the designers who ended up in the bottom two: Cavanagh Baker (left in photo) and Frankie Lewis (right). Cavanagh got the entitled “rhymes with itch” edit while Frankie was portrayed as sweetheart overcoming adversity. All you need to know is that when the designers learned they had $250 to spend at Mood, Cavanagh pooh-poohed the amount while Frankie was ecstatic about that much cash.
They did have commonalities between them, mostly on the negative side. They each had plus-size models (something...

“Project Runway” came back to Bravo on Thursday night for its 17th season. Gone was host Heidi Klum and mentor Tim Gunn. In their place were model Karlie Kloss and Season 4 winner Christian Siriano. The new workroom is bright, airy and more spacious. The Brother sewing machines were new. And the eager mass of 16 contestants is probably among the most diverse cast of competitors ever. The models come in an array of sizes. And, for the first time ever, there is even an Asian transgender model named MiMi Tao, who was declared “a real goddess” by her delighted designer, Kovid Kapoor.
As for the judges, Nina Garcia, Elle’s editor-in-chief, is the only old-timer to return. Joining her is Elaine Welteroth, the former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, and designer Brandon Maxwell, who did Lady Gaga‘s sleeveless black gown for the recent Oscars and has dressed the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.

“Guys, I’m so excited I could pee!” exclaimed Christian Siriano in the season 17 premiere of “Project Runway.” He was bringing the models in for final fittings with their designers before the runway show when all that pent-up enthusiasm came out, and for good reason. Siriano won season four of “Runway,” and is now bringing it full circle by mentoring the current batch of contestants. He replaces Tim Gunn, who declined to return to the show as it transitioned back to Bravo from Lifetime. But were you as excited to see Siriano as he was to be there? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Siriano is arguably the best known “Runway” champion. He was still making a stir on the fashion scene as recently as February, when his gender-defying tuxedo gown for Billy Porter raised eyebrows — I for one thought it was a defiant showstopper.

“Project Runway” came back to Bravo for its 17th season on Thursday minus long-time host Heidi Klum and beloved mentor Tim Gunn. For the most part, their replacements — model Karlie Kloss and Season 4 winner Christian Siriano — were fine, although he is a bit too low energy for my taste. Kloss, on the other hand, was bubbly but a tad too eager when she finally got to say her predecessor’s catchphrase before the runway show: “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out!”
As for the 16 contestants, they are an eclectic bunch whose ethnic backgrounds include Samoan, Syrian, Haitian-American, Colombian and Indian. They all introduced their style aesthetic early on by showing a sample of their designs, most rather impressive. But then the focus shifted to the task at hand, as they tried to make an outfit that reflected each judge’s photographed moment...

Project Runway returned to Bravo on Thursday with a slightly updated look, an almost entirely new panel of judges and 16 diverse designers hoping to leave a mark on the fashion industry. But die-hard Runway fans — those who watched it on Bravo (2004–2008) and followed it to Lifetime (2009–2017) — were presumably pleased to discover that very little about the competition itself has changed.
For their first challenge, the designers pulled inspiration from photos of their judges — Karlie Kloss, Nina Garcia, Elaine Welteroth and Brandon Maxwell — taken at a moment when each judge felt truly impacted by the power of fashion. Or whatever.

After more than a decade on Lifetime “Project Runway” returned to Bravo on Thursday night, March 14, for a 17th season that once again brings together 16 designers from around the world to compete for fashion supremacy. So who made the best first impressions in “First Impressions”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
“Runway” spent its first five seasons on Bravo before moving to Lifetime. But the fallout from the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein resulted in Lifetime dropping the series, which was produced by the Weinstein Company. Then Bravo picked it back up. But the network switch isn’t the only big change for the show this year.

“Project Runway” fans have been in limbo since season 16 aired in the fall of 2017. The series was produced by the Weinstein Company and thus became a casualty of the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. After years on Lifetime (which is currently airing its final season of “Project Runway All Stars“), the show was picked back up by its original network Bravo, but without its hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. They’re making it work, however: season 17 of the long-running fashion competition premieres Thursday, March 14, at 8:00pm.
Stepping in for Klum as host is Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss. And taking over Gunn’s mentoring duties is a man who understands full well how it feels to be a contestant on the series: season four “Runway” champ Christian Siriano. But they’ve got big shoes to fill. Klum and Gunn were perennial nominees at the Emmys for their hosting duties,...
