“I’d never heard this song before,” confessed “American Idol” singer Ryan Hammond prior to his duet of “Hold On, I’m Comin'” with Cynthia Erivo during Monday’s Top 20 episode (watch above). He continued, “I had just listened to Christian music when I was younger. But I listened to [Cynthia’s] version like crazy and I totally fell in love with this song.” Unfortunately, judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie weren’t impressed with Ryan’s “swagger” on the stage and so this 25-year-old from Modesto, California was eliminated.

“I really don’t want to mess up tonight because eliminations are on the line,” declared “American Idol” heartthrob Logan Johnson prior to his duet of “What a Time” with Julia Michaels during Monday’s Top 20 episode (watch above). “Singing with Julia, I don’t want to embarrass her. I just don’t want to go home. I don’t want to mess this up,” Logan expressed. Unfortunately, judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan put through seven other artists and so this 20-year-old from Boise, Idaho was eliminated.

For the first time in 17 seasons, Ryan Seacrest called in sick to American Idol on Monday, forcing mentor Bobby Bones out of the wings and into the spotlight. (Bones tried to play it cool, but let’s be real — he’s been ready to give Seacrest the Nomi Malone treatment since Day 1.)
Even without Seacrest on hand to incite panic, Monday’s Idol remained a dramatic two-hour experience, which ended with the elimination of three more singers… and the official reveal of Season 17’s Top 14. But before we find out which contestants are proceeding to next week’s first live episode,...

“American Idol” concluded the Top 20 stage of the competition on April 8 when Ryan Seacrest revealed the seven artists from Group 2 who had made the cut. They join the seven acts from Group 1 who were announced on Sunday to form the Top 14 who will sing for America’s votes in the live shows starting April 14.
As with Group 1, the 10 contestants in Group 2 got one more chance to audition for Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. This time, they were paired with well-known musical artists to perform duets, often of the songs which are most associated with these famous faces. The three judges then had to decide which of the 10 contenders deserved to continue in the competition based on these duets and the solos that they sung as well. Spoilers ahead

Sunday’s (three-hour!) American Idol narrowed down the competition considerably, selecting only 20 singers to return to Los Angeles for yet another round of cuts ahead of the season’s first live show. Ok, let’s begin by discussing the the singers who did make it through to the Top 20, a list that includes most of TVLine readers’ 10 favorite contestants:
Alyssa Raghu, 16 | Katy’s “sauce” returned this season more committed than ever, having filled her post-Season 1 calendar with voice lessons,...
