The finale of Castlevania: Nocturne Season 1 begins, appropriately, in darkness. In the eighth and last episode, “Devourer of Light,” darkness eclipses the sun, with just a ring of light visible around its edges. Will the vampire messiah Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente) be triumphant in her mission to enshroud the world in an endless night? Can Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel) and his friends possibly prevail against her powerful vampire cabal? From creators Clive Bradley and Kevin Kolde and directors Sam and Adam Deats, the eight-episode animated series has reached its cliff-hanger apex, and we’re here to break it down. Read on for an explainer about that surprise Season 1 ending.
What happens in the Episode 8 finale of Castlevania: Nocturne?
First, a quick refresher: When Season 1 begins, we’re in Boston and it’s 1783, 300 years after the first Castlevania series. We meet young Richter, born into the Belmont family...

We’re zapping into science fiction territory and back into “re-adaptation” conversations this month for Revenge of the Remakes. Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman bring vastly different approaches to their Invasion of the Body Snatchers films, uniformly citing Jack Finney’s 1954 novel “The Body Snatchers” as their source. Kaufman isn’t directly remaking Siegel’s film but acknowledges its existence multiple times; there’s a literary influence behind both features, yet Kaufman can’t ignore what already exists. The same conversation arose in my The Fly analysis, and will assuredly surface again down the road. Invasion of the Body Snatchers can’t help itself from being a remake, and with decades apart, Kaufman evolves the product into a contemporary extraterrestrial nightmare (speaking for the late 1970s).

According to a Reddit post from the new show, the first episode will feature special guest Andy Daly.

This Castlevania article contains spoilers.
The vampire killers have essentially lost by the final scene of Castlevania: Nocturne. Richter, Annette, Tera, and Maria’s plan to destroy the Abbot’s Forgemaster machine has failed miserably, Tera is forced to sacrifice herself to Erzsebet Báthory in order to save Maria, and now the remaining heroes are on the run. There’s basically nothing stopping Drolta Tzuentes and her legion of monsters from hunting down their opponents. But just as a bloodthirsty Drolta is about to strike at her prey, a sword pierces her through the heart. And it’s no ordinary blade that finally takes down the vicious vampire but the one belonging to Alucard.
Yes, James Callis returns as the son of Dracula in the final moments of Nocturne, setting up what will likely be a much bigger role for the fan-favorite dhampir in season 2. His surprise cameo makes a lot of sense,...

This Castlevania review contains spoilers.
When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.
Set in 1792, about 300 years after the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the events of Nocturne unfold during the chaos of the French Revolution, a very suitable backdrop for all the gruesome violence that ensues at the crack of a Belmont whip. Returning directors Sam and Adam Deats go for broke with action sequences that extract every last ounce of blood, guts,...

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. You can read my full review of the debut season here.

As an adaptation of one of the most popular action RPG franchises, Netflix’s Castlevania series hit the ball out of the park with refreshing, relatable characterization. The morally gray characters blurred the line between the conventional binary of good and evil, an aspect that made iconic characters like Dracula, Alucard, Trevor, and Sypha not only relatable but also kept their core essence intact, which resulted in a surge in the franchise’s fanbase at the same time. Even side characters like Isaac and Hector from the original series were given distinctive personalities and character arcs, the likes of which can rarely be seen in other adaptations of similar kinds.
Respecting the legacy of the original series, the spin-off Castlevania: Nocturne presents an interesting set of characters in its first season. Being set in the transitional period of the late 18th century, the series draws inspiration from the then-global political...

With Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne looking like it will continue the success of the previous animated series, it’s probably not a coincidence that its inspiration, 1993’s Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Long considered one of the best, if not the best, entry in the series, Rondo of Blood paved the way for greater things for the series after its release. Even today, the game still remains an enjoyable romp, and is far more accessible now than it was back when it was released.
Set in 1792, Dracula has once again been resurrected. With the help of the dark priest Shaft, Dracula kidnaps four women on behalf of Dracula. One of those women is Annette, the beloved of 19-year-old Richter Belmont, a descendent of Simon Belmont. Richter sets out with his family’s Vampire Killer whip to rescue the four women, but also to destroy Dracula once again.

Castlevania: Nocturne quickly finds a fast-paced, blood-soaked rhythm in this satisfying sequel to the Netflix animated horror series.
“Warriors in arms. Family in hearts.”
Castlevania: Nocturne becomes another prolonged pursuit between skilled and sullen vampire hunters and the dark creatures that go bump in the night. This basic plot may not be groundbreaking and if anything it leans into the predictable premise of each Castlevania game. That being said, the first scene–an extended cold open that runs for a third of the episode–is really the perfect distillation of why Castlevania: Nocturne is worth watching. A stunning battle between Julia Belmont and Orlox, a 250-year-old vampire, plays out while multiple forms of magic release supernatural spectacles as the two battle to the bitter end. In a single scene, Richter Belmont’s entire purpose gets crystalized and sets him–and the series–off on a strong, confident note. Castlevania: Nocturne...

Death, darkness, decay, and damnation return with the ornate, mystifying and gothic trappings of Netflix’s original animated series Castlevania: Nocturne. Created by Konami, the renowned action/horror RPG game franchise of the same name dominated the game arena for over two decades up to the mid-2010s and got its due revival with Netflix’s original animated series consisting of four seasons. Arguably the strongest entry in Netflix’s original animation content, the series paved the way for a more accurate adaptation of game-oriented narratives, as well as instilling contemporary sensibilities with the creation.
Majorly revolving around the rivalry between the vampire hunter Belmont family legacy and Dracula himself, the Castlevania series has inspired a number of classic narratives dealing with gothic horror and similar themes. The recently released Castlevania: Nocturne acts as a follow-up to the original animated series. The narrative of the animated series has been adapted...

A fresh-faced comedian walks through New York after having woken up and feeding his fish. He's got a nearly beatific smile on his face as he's wished good luck and almost instantly told by those same people (with sarcastic tones) that there's no pressure, because he's been chosen to replace one of the most beloved comedians to ever grace the small screen. He's tall, lanky, with a shock of red hair, and he's just barely reached the age of 30. Everyone from John Tesh to Tom Brokaw to passers-by give him some version of these remarks ("Ya better be as good as Letterman!"), and he takes them all in good stride. He walks into 30 Rockefeller Center, gets ready for his first TV hosting gig, taking over the "Late Night" show on NBC at 12:35 am. He walks into his dressing room, where he proceeds to attempt hanging himself. It's only when...

Tana, the compassionate protagonist of The Unknown Country, is asked about her plans at one point in the movie and answers with a slightly embarrassed smile: “Just kinda floatin.’ ” Cut loose from the day-to-day by the death of her grandmother and far from home, Tana might not have a specific itinerary, but, mile by mile in what will turn out to be a 2,000-mile journey, she’s searching, in her guarded way, and open to possibilities. Lily Gladstone inhabits the role with warmth and deep wells of feeling, striking nuanced notes in Tana’s watchful solitude as well as her interactions. The people Tana meets during her travels include characters played by actors and real-life locals playing themselves, and the quiet but stirring effect is a dreamscape of eye-opening geography, existential longing and the enduring workaday.

Before the SeaWorld Kills movement, we had Free Willy, the 1993 film whose emotional ending taught us that maybe, just maybe, orcas shouldn’t live in tiny pools. Of course, 30 years ago CGI wasn’t what it is now, and in a new interview, director Simon Wincer revealed how, exactly, they made Free Willy possible: a rocket launcher.
“I remember saying to my agent: ‘If I can deliver the finale — where the whale leaps to freedom — we’ve got a movie,'” Wincer told The Guardian. “We had so many meetings about how the hell we were going to do it. It was the early days of CGI so we shot at high tide in a small harbour — and literally built a rocket launcher with an animatronic whale on it. It would fly out of the water and come to a stop then CGI would take over. Like any pivotal movie moment,...

I love Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’ve seen every movie he’s done. Read his book. Follow his newsletter (which I totally recommend if you’re looking for a bit of healthy positivity in your day). Can spell his last name without Googling it. I grew up looking up to him as a father figure and still do to this day. He’s one of those special people you can look to for positivity and motivation when you’re feeling down. An actual positive male role model who just wants you to eat right, lift weights, and be kind. Oh, and he hosted and directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt once and owns a miniature horse named Whiskey that he lets live in the house with him.
What’S Not To Love?!
As you can tell, I am very excited to go through Arnold’s brief but legendary career...

Hollywood can be seen as an industry that's constantly racing after a seemingly impossible goal, a finish line that always remains just out of sight: what is the best way to make a repeatable success? What is the formula that creates a successful franchise? How does one live life a quarter-mile at a time?
It turns out that the "Fast & Furious" franchise may have held the answers this entire time: Family, Love, Respect, and Earnestness are the pillars on which this improbably continuing series is built, and no matter how many criticisms, witticisms, or post-ironic judgments are tossed at it, the sheer open-hearted emotion that's present within the films and the characters seem to win out every time.
That near-assured victory looked dubious for the upcoming latest installment of the series, "Fast X,' when original director Justin Lin stepped down at the beginning of shooting, leaving Louis Leterrier to take his place.

Top International execs from Zdf Studios, Fremantle, All3Media and Banijay have said the potential U.S. writers strike and changing market economics can create opportunities to strike new business.
As Banijay Rights CEO Cathy Payne put it, likening the challenging of leaving previous market conditions behind to bouncing back after being dumped: “When one door closes, another one opens.” She was talking during a Series Mania panel on windowing and content financing this afternoon in France.
International distribution companies are already wrestling with myriad content financing issues as the U.S. market corrects after streamers’ spending momentum slows. All eyes are now turning to the discussions between the WGA and AMPTP, and one potential upshot if a strike kicks off will likely be more international business for U.S. networks.
All3Media International CEO Louise Pedersen said U.S. execs at the London TV Screenings at the start of the month had begun considering contingency plans.
As Banijay Rights CEO Cathy Payne put it, likening the challenging of leaving previous market conditions behind to bouncing back after being dumped: “When one door closes, another one opens.” She was talking during a Series Mania panel on windowing and content financing this afternoon in France.

When Cph:dox shifted from a fall festival to a spring-based fest in 2017, it got out of IDFA’s shadow and grew into one of the most influential documentary events of the year.
“It made a big jump in prominence when it moved to March because it fit into the calendar in a more exciting way for a lot of documentary stakeholders,” Thom Powers, lead documentary programmer for Toronto Film Festival, says. “It became a great place for films coming out of Sundance to have a European launch. It’s also become a very significant place for films to make world premieres near the beginning of the year, which can then send them on a circuit, traveling to other festivals like Hot Docs or Doc NYC.”
Now in its 20th year, Cph:dox is among the largest documentary film festivals in the world. This year’s lineup includes 200 docus, more than half...

I’m going to come clean and admit that Dead Cells missed my radar entirely when it first released back in 2018. The “MetroidVania” style roguelike challenges players with zipping through an ever changing environment while progressively growing stronger with each run, facing challenging bosses along the way. Where Dead Cells stands out from the crowd in my experience is the speed element of it all. Sure, I first approached the game like I do most roguelikes in taking caution at every turn, plotting out every single move, and trying to die as little as possible.
Yeah, Dead Cells kicked my ass pretty fast when using this approach. The game instead has a great emphasis on speed and dodging. The player character moves insanely fast through the environment and has tools in his arsenal designed to deliver out brutal punishment using three core concepts: Brutality, Tactics, and Survival. Brutality is how...

Montreal-based Rezolution Pictures, behind Sundance winner “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World,” and Winnipeg-based Op Little Bird have partnered with Fremantle International on Jennifer Podemski and Hannah Moscovitch’s original drama series “Little Bird,” which is set to premiere on Crave and Aptn in Canada.
The series, which stars Darla Contois and Lisa Edelstein, follows the life of Bezhig Little Bird, a victim of the Sixties Scoop in Saskatchewan wherein First Nations children were abducted and placed in foster homes before being put up for adoption by white families.
Told in parallel timelines, “Little Bird” quickly contrasts Bezhig’s childhood with her engagement party – only this time as Esther Rosenblum, a woman in her 20s on the cusp of life, and suddenly wracked with repressed memories. As a showrunner, Podemski, who is herself both Indigenous and Jewish, is perfectly positioned to give authenticity and meaning to the matter. She...

After being announced during The Game Awards last month, Motion Twin and Evil Empire have dropped a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Castlevania crossover Dlc for Dead Cells. Rather than a slick animated trailer as before, this time around, we get some “blink and you’ll miss it” gameplay footage of the Dlc in action. Yeah, it’s not much, but it definitely gets the job done with a nice throwback to the intro to the original Castlevania.
Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania will see the arrival of two new biomes for you to explore, including Dracula’s castle. You’ll also be able to unlock 14 iconic Castlevania weapons including the Vampire Killer, Throwing Axe & Holy Water. Best of all (at least for some), the Dlc includes 51 of the original Castlevania music tracks, as well as 12 tracks reimagined in the style of Dead Cells.

With the release of the final season of "Stranger Things" on the distant horizon, viewers are eagerly waiting to see what the show's creators have in store for Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) relationship. Although the characters on the show do have chemistry, the actors themselves remain close friends - even after Brown's viral lie-detector test that revealed she thinks her costar is a "lousy kisser." In fact, both actors are in serious relationships.
Brown and her beau made their red carpet debut in March 2022, while Wolfhard and his alleged girlfriend have decided to keep their relationship offline. Naturally, "Stranger Things" diehards want to know more about Wolfhard's possible partner.
According to E! News, Wolfhard is reportedly dating fellow actress Elsie Richter, who's known for her reoccurring role as April on HBO's "Doll & Em." It's unknown when the "It" actor and Richter first connected or what they've been up to since,...

Hitler goes on trial in Hunters‘ series finale and is found guilty, an unsurprising and welcome outcome to a show that is an elaborate, and understandable, World War II revenge fantasy. But another revelation that takes place in the Prime Video drama’s final hour also offers vindication for Jonah, who has struggled ever since killing Meyer Offerman, aka The Wolf, in the Season 1 finale.
What (even more terrible) truth do we learn about Meyer? And where do the hunters wind up after everything shakes out? Read on for the highlights of “The Trial of Adolf Hitler.”

Screening this evening Jan. 6 as part of the Uruguay’s Arca Festival, “Inside the Uffizi” has already done steady business for boutique Berlin-based documentary shingle Magnetfilm, headed by Georg Gruber.
Rights have been sold to Sky in Italy and Hugo East for China, and an online release planned on streamers via Docodigital scheduled before the end of March on iTunes, Google, Amazon, Rakuten for Tvod and Est in the U.S, Canada, Spain, selected Spanish-language territories in Latin America such as Argentina, and Italy.

Premium documentaries, co-productions and the changing streamer landscape are set to dominate next week’s Mipcom Cannes as thousands of buyers descend on the Croisette after three years off, according to a wealth of senior sales bosses.
In the lead-up to one of the most highly-anticipated markets for years, Deadline has spoken with Fremantle’s Jens Richter, All3Media International’s Louise Pedersen, Banijay Rights’ Cathy Payne, eOne’s Stuart Baxter and A+E Networks’ Steve MacDonald to assess the state of play before the October 17-20 event.
Each was delighted to be returning in person after three years virtual — last year’s Mipcom was hybrid and pared back — and said there is a renewed optimism, negating the ‘market fatigue’ that has crept up in years gone by.
“People need people and this is a people business,” says Fremantle International CEO Richter. “My main priority is to connect with everybody. Being...

Believe it or not, non-Jeopardy! viewers, but Celebrity Jeopardy! is a real thing and not just a classic series of SNL skits.
America’s favorite quiz show has been inviting celebrities on to try their hand at trivia since its ninth season in 1992. And yes, like in the aforementioned SNL skits, the questions are usually a bit “dumbed down” from the usual games. Still, many celebrities over the years have revealed themselves to be secret brainiacs with their surprising performance on the grueling game. Comedians like Cheech Marin, athletes like Aaron Rodgers, and actors like Jane Kaczmarek have all brought home some serious money for their respective charities.
Now, in its 39th season (and it second after the death of iconic original host Alex Trebek), Jeopardy! is going to give Celebrity Jeopardy! another go. This time, however, the stakes and scopes are much greater. Instead of being isolated to only a week within Jeopardy!

The Finnish Film Affair, a showcase for new films from the host country and the Nordics, will for the first time feature TV dramas at this year’s event, which runs parallel to the Helsinki International Film Festival — Love & Anarchy (Hiff).
Alongside the 26 feature film and documentary projects being presented to industry guests during an onstage event on Sept. 22 will be a curated selection of four TV drama series from Finland. “This is something that both the local industry and our international guests have frequently requested from us,” said Maria Pirkkalainen, director of Finnish Film Affair.
“We already piloted highlighting a few selected Finnish TV series in 2019 to great feedback and feel like now is the right time to continue this, especially with a record number of international guests joining us here in Helsinki.”
The four selected projects are in the early development stage, each with the backing of a Finnish broadcaster already secured.

Years after the “Game of Thrones” Starbucks cup goof, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a visual effects mistake in last Sunday’s “House of the Dragon” episode.
In Season 1 Episode 3, titled “Second of His Name,” a scene features King Viserys (Paddy Considine) handing a letter to a soldier. A Twitter user pointed out that the king’s fourth and fifth fingers are green in the episode — apparently a visual effects editor did not edit out the “green screen” effect on the digits.
