“Emmanuelle,” a new feature from French writer-director Audrey Diwan, will world premiere in competition as the opening film for the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival, which kicks off on September 20.
Inspired by the eponymous erotic novel by Emmanuelle Arsan, the film tells the story of a woman looking for a lost pleasure. During a business trip to Hong Kong, she meets several new people, including a man named Kei, who constantly eludes her. According to the director, the story was conceived as an exploration of pleasure in the post #MeToo era.
Diwan, a Venice Golden Lion winner for her 2021 film “Happening,” co-wrote “Emmanuelle” with fellow filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski, whose 2013 feature “Grand Central” screened in competition at Cannes and won the François Chalais Award.
Chantelouve, Rectangle Productions and Goodfellas (formerly Wild Bunch) produce. “Emmanuelle” will be distributed by Pathé in France, where it will debut on September 25, and Beta Fiction in Spain.

The Discarnates.Taichi Yamada’s novel Ijintachi to no natsu (1987)—the title literally translates as Summer of the Strange People; the book was published in English as Strangers—intertwines a tale of loving human connection with a dense meditation on navigating personal history. A screenwriter, Hideo Harada, feels stalled in his life after a divorce; he lives in a mostly uninhabited high-rise where he works in solitude on TV scripts. When visiting his old hometown, Asakusa, he meets a couple who bear a striking resemblance to his long-dead parents, and very soon he realizes these are their ghosts. While this surreal experience pulls him in one direction, his sole neighbor in the building, Kei, pulls him in another, as they begin a romantic relationship. His parents’ ghosts offer a chance to playact a childhood he never got to experience due to their untimely passing, but the present is where the...

New Switch games that are heavily influenced by the 16-bit era of gaming are something I will always get very very excited about. The 16-bit era and the Super Nintendo in particular is the time I started to really get into gaming and also my love of platformers.
Berserk Boy is a retro, but modern, action-platformer for fans of the Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog games, but it never feels like it is copying either. Berserk Boy is very much its own thing.
As a fan of Mario games, a good story is not something I really need to enjoy a game but Berserk Boy does have a fun one. It goes like this. “In the distant future, a mad scientist and his army of darkness seek to enslave the people of Earth. Hope for all humanity rests with The Resistance, but are they enough? Yoshida Kota was born 1978 in Tokyo and graduated from Waseda University. He studied filmmaking at the Enbu seminar and gained international recognition with “Yuriko's Aroma” (2010) at festivals like “Nippon Connection”. Different from his last film “Sexual Drive” (2021), he now turns to the severe topic of social welfare and presents a gripping social drama.
On the occasion of the world premiere at “Osaka Asian Film Festival” Yoshida Kota reveals his thoughts behind the script and talks about how to combine vulnerability and dignity on screen.
“Snow Drop” is a courageous movie because it does not shy away from a challenging and unadressed topic. Everyone talks about the ageing Japanese society. There are also more and more movies that adress this “problem” in terms of dementia and eldery care. But it seems to me that most of them stay on a superficial and bold level in telling these stories. Your movie is different.

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" wrapped up its first season this week with a surprisingly satisfying finale that wove together disparate threads the show has been untangling all season. The belief that the dead live on in our memories is often the only comfort anyone can think to offer the bereaved, or those in the process of losing a loved one. But for Takashi (Mirai Moriyama), the introspective adult son at the heart of Kei Chika-ura’s quietly tectonic heartbreaker, that comfort is unavailable on multiple levels. Not only has he been long estranged from his father, Yohji (a shattering San Sebastian Best Performance-winning Tatsuya Fuji), but Yohji’s own precipitous descent into the fog of dementia means that whatever Takashi can now learn of him, at this late stage, is jumbled and fragmentary and possibly false. How can we adequately remember someone who cannot remember himself?
Like so much of “Great Absence,” that question is posed as a kind of mystery, made all the eerier by the ordinariness of the clues that tease its solution — an uncanceled meal delivery,...

From “Real Ghost Footage” compilations on YouTube to staged ectoplasmic photographs, our species has been fascinated with attempting to record the supernatural ever since it first became possible to do so. I mean, spirit photography was popularized almost immediately after the first camera was invented, so it makes sense that we’re still chasing spirits from behind the safety of a lens well into the new millennium. Naturally, this obsession with the paranormal would eventually find its way to video games, with one specific survival horror franchise turning haunted cameras into the basis for an interactive J-horror experience.
Often referred to as some of the scariest Survival Horror titles ever released, Fatal Frame I and II are almost universally recognized as classics even by those who’ve never played them. Great Absence, the second feature film from Japanese director Kei Chika-ura, is receiving its world premiere in Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform section.
Inspired by Kei’s real-life experiences, the film tells the story of an actor living in Tokyo who is forced to travel home when the police call to say his father is suffering from dementia and has lost touch with reality. Making matters worse, his father’s second wife appears to be missing.
The actor makes the trip home with his own wife, full of conflicted emotions over a man who left the family when he was still a child, and starts an exploration into the mysteries of his father’s life. Along the way, the film touches on themes including time and memory, familial obligation and the role that women play in male-dominated Japanese society.

The actor makes the trip home with his own wife, full of conflicted emotions over a man who left the family when he was still a child, and starts an exploration into the mysteries of his father’s life. Along the way, the film touches on themes including time and memory, familial obligation and the role that women play in male-dominated Japanese society.

Long prescribed to a stagnating society, the status quo had its own rulebook torn at the onset of the age of coronavirus. Rupturing ordinariness at the seams, the question always remained: why go back? Why not stumble into the extraordinary, an imaginative domain of endless possibilities and supernatural intrigue? These ideals of returning to what had been became rife for their own rebellion, to forge a future suited for all. For the adolescent, such drastic change could never come at a more disruptive time, forced to make sense of a world, of a body, of mind and soul, being turned upside down. Though there may be little actual rebellion unfolding within Shinichi Fujita's ‘Mayhem Girls', there is plenty to rebel against the film itself, a disappointing yet oddly charming flurry of escapism that poses more questions than it can bare to answer.

Jumping Ash (1976) by Leong Po-chih
The realism in the presentation of both the criminal world and the way police worked at the time is also evident, with Leong highlighting the fact that a number of poor people were actually caught between the two. The punishment Callan's girlfriend receives in the hands of two men (despite the fact that one of them gets his share also) and the fate of the blind man, are the most indicatory of that comment. Furthermore, the combination of corruption (even Callan's mother gets a washing machine from a drug dealer at some point) and intense bureaucracy is presented as an obstacle (in Callan's effort) to dispense justice, which was frequently rather hard to overcome. This last aspect is what,...

Some believe in heavens and hells, others in reincarnation, and an increasingly large number of people, in plain unison of decomposing bodies in nature. An intimate portrayal of a relationship reaching the point of exhaustion, “2/Duo” is a film that will resonate with those who have struggled with similar feelings of stagnation. In fact, its minimalistic approach feels semi-perverse in the way the viewer is given a front-row seat into the lives of two individuals at a breaking point. Yet, capturing this level of intimacy marks “2/Duo” as a deeply engaging work that relies on a minimalistic yet intimate approach,...

"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.
The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

It must be great fun to use one own’s family name to create the legend of a famous samurai who fought demons 1000 years ago, with power-bearing descendants to carry on with his heroic deeds in present times. It is equally conspicuous that Yusuke Watanabe had a blast re-creating the world of Yokai which aged well due to Takashi Miike’s previous take on creatures from the Japanese folklore and mythology: “The Great Yokai War (2005)” is still as exciting to watch as it was 15 years ago, and it stands out as one of the best fantasy films ever made.

If there could be any talk of change in quality between the original movie and its sequel, it can be frankly attributed to one technical aspect only (although the great job was also done back in 2005). The special effects...

As we mentioned many times before, Takahisa Zeze has moved as far away from his pinku film past as possible during the last years, with his latest works essentially being mainstream, at least in Japanese movie industry terms. As such, a film about the aftermath of the 2011, which have been releasing aplenty after a “healing” decade has passed, was bound to come from the veteran filmmaker, who, once more, does not disappoint.
“In the Wake” is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival

Prefectural investigator Tomashino, who has lost his family in the tsunami and carries the burden in the most evident way possible, works with young detective Hasuda to investigate the murders,...
