Whoopi Goldberg's cameo appearance in the new musical version of 'The Color Purple' was kept top secret until the film's release. The 68-year-old actress made her big screen debut in the original 1985 movie - based on the novel by Alice Walker - and won an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and it's now been revealed she returned to make an appearance in Blitz Bazawule's new musical take on the story, but the director went to great lengths to keep the cameo quiet. He told Variety: "We had to be stealthy about her involvement from the beginning. Only key crew were aware that Whoopi was playing the role."We also never mentioned her in any press and she remained uncredited for the role."The actress played the lead role of Celie in the first film, and the character is played by Fantasia Barrino and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi in...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Color Purple,” now playing in theaters.
As “The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule and his star-studded cast made their press rounds ahead of the musical movie’s Christmas Day release, they paid a special trip to visit “The View” and Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the 1985 movie adaptation of Alice Walker’s classic novel.
It’d been nearly 40 years since Goldberg played Celie, an abused and uneducated Southern Black woman whose journey to liberation is at the center of Walker’s tale. Bazawule and stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson wanted to give her her flowers.
“’The Color Purple’ is sacred ground. You don’t just show up to it with nothing to offer or nothing to contribute,” Bazawule said, when Goldberg asked why he decided to sign on for the film. “It’s been a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize-winning book.

Nestled amid a tale of hardship and torment, “Keep It Movin'” is a bright spot in the newly released adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Just as sisters Nettie and Celie (Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) are about to be torn from one another, they find a brief moment of respite and optimism as they sing to one another on the beach. “Nothing’s gonna take you down, oh / Just let it go / Life can never break your soul,” sings Nettie, instilling a feeling of hope that flickers and wanes in Celie as the film endures.
As one of the few original songs included in director Blitz Bazawule’s revival of “The Color Purple,” “Keep It Movin'” has already emerged as a focal point for the movie, which earned the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in history following its release on Dec. 25. Warning: This story includes spoilers from the 2023 musical remake of The Color Purple.
With The Color Purple being a musical remake of the 1985 film, there are certainly many scenes that hearken back to the original. But in one scene, there’s a face that brings it all full circle.
Early on in the film, Whoopi Goldberg, Oscar-nominated for her role as Celie in the original, is cast as a midwife who helps young Celie, played by Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, give birth to her second child. The role is brief but has delighted audiences in previews.
Oprah Winfrey, who starred alongside Goldberg in the original and is a producer on the new film, told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview that Goldberg was cast in part for fan reaction.

Blitz Bazawule could care less about The Color Purple’s recent award nominations. The film’s director isn’t worried about the movie-musical’s Best Picture snub at the Golden Globe or wowed by the musical’s five Critics Choice nominations and three mentions on the Oscars’ shortlist for its music. He understands the significance of such accolades, but says he prefers to focus on how viewers will receive the Broadway musical adaptation.
“I honestly do not pay attention to any of it,” Bazawule tells Rolling Stone, the day the Critics Choice nominations were announced.

Introducing Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, ‘The Color Purple’s’ Young Celie: ‘This Is Work I Was Meant to Do’
Turning 30 is always a memorable moment, but “The Color Purple” actor Phylicia Pearl Mpasi rang in her third decade with a birthday serenade from Oprah Winfrey.
Coincidentally, Mpasi’s birthday (November 16) fell on another special occasion: the first screening of the musical reimagining of “The Color Purple.” The atmosphere was charged with anticipation since this was the debut of the film before critics and press, but the mood backstage was particularly jovial since it was the first time the cast — Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and Mpasi, as well as Winfrey, producer Scott Sanders and director Blitz Bazawule — had assembled since wrapping production in 2022. But there was an extra element of emotion for Mpasi, since “The Color Purple” marks her feature film debut.

Where do you stand on the 1985 film version of “The Color Purple,” which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but won none? Some feel it wasn’t Steven Spielberg’s story to tell. Others marvel at how a director of the upbringing depicted in “The Fabelmans” managed to recognize and reflect so many aspects of Black culture: the music, the spirituality, the multiple catharses to which it builds. Looking back, Spielberg did justice to Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel, but he also left room to expand and improve.
Now, nearly four decades later, a rousing new version arrives from director Blitz Bazawule, who collaborated with Beyoncé on her 2020 visual album “Black Is King.” Instead of rejecting what came before, the Ghanian filmmaker embraces and builds upon it, collaborating with Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey to update the material for the next generation (all three serve as producers). The main change,...

Blitz Bazawule’s big-screen adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple and its 2005 musical theater production is basically echo-chamber karaoke. The film knows the words and tunes but, with rare exception, lacks the passion and the perspective to make them truly resonate.
Walker’s book charted the emotional, sexual, and implicitly political coming of age of an African-American girl named Celie, whose life in rural, early-20th-century Georgia is several tiers below hell. She’s borne two children by a man, Alphonso, who beats and rapes her, and whom she knows as her father. And then a barbaric farmer known as Mister comes calling. He has eyes for Celie’s sister, Nettie, but Alphonso pawns off Celie instead, women being, in the eyes of these men, chattel-like property with inarguable coital benefits.
The book is written in epistolary style, with Celie addressing an unseen God throughout.

Foxx was honored with the Vanguard Award for his acclaimed performance in “The Burial,” from Amazon’s Prime Video. The Oscar and Grammy winner also starred in Netflix’s “They Cloned Tyrone,” which earned him a Gotham Award nomination last month.
Jurnee Smollett presented the award to her “Burial” co-star, saying he’s a “true vanguard, a pioneer who has broken down barriers and inspired generations of artists like myself to be bold, audacious dreamers.”

This story about “The Color Purple” composers Nova Wav first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap magazine.
As far back as Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation of Alice Walker’s game-changing novel, “The Color Purple” has always had a musical legacy. In addition to being scored by none other than Quincy Jones, the film boasted an earworm of an original song, “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” that was co-penned by Lionel Richie. So it wasn’t shocking that “Purple” would spring to life in Broadway musical form, first in 2005 and then in a multi-Tony-winning revival 10 years later, which would launch the career of an exciting upstart named Cynthia Erivo.
When the prospect of an adaptation of the musical into an all-singing, all-dancing major film bloomed into reality, it was clear the team would need some new tunes to goose the already-rousing ones in the two-act musical. Enter Nova Wav,...

They held a world premiere screening of the new film adaptation of the stage musical of “The Color Purple” Thursday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the kind of electric event that makes you feel special to have been invited. There wasn’t an empty seat in the cavernous theater, and there wasn’t an unmoved attendee by the end. Those who were suspecting that the film was being held back from previews because Warner Bros. and the filmmakers had something to hide were proven wrong, as it was rousing, superbly acted, powerfully directed, masterfully choreographed and all-around terrific.

Thursday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, the cast and crew of Warner Bros.’ “The Color Purple” dazzled audiences in its first-ever showing. Lead actress Fantasia Barrino was joined by fellow cast members Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Gabriella “H.E.R.” Wilson, Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, plus director Blitz Bazawule and producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey.
After a screening of this film adaptation of the stage musical, which in turn was based on Alice Walker‘s 1982 novel of the same name, Variety’s Angelique Jackson moderated a nearly hour-long panel in which the tears flowed openly. It was a long time getting to this point, from the movie’s initial announcement in November 2018, to casting and filming, and then the 118-day actors’ strike.
“This is why I said it’s gonna bring healing,” Barrino told the packed theater at the end of the panel.

Oprah Winfrey is a media mogul but before achieving all of that she starred in The Color Purple back in 1985. Her performance as Sofia in the Steven Spielberg-directed film went on to earn her a nomination at the Oscars.
Ahead of the film adaptation of The Color Purple musical, which Winfrey produces, she is looking back and remembering the amount of money she got for her role as Sofia. Although the paycheck wasn’t huge, Winfrey says the experience was life-changing.
“I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in The Color Purple,” Winfrey told Essence magazine in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me,” Oprah said. “They were only offering $35,000 to be in this film, and it is the best $35,000 I ever earned.

Alice Walker's acclaimed novel "The Color Purple" is being adapted once more. Decades after Steven Spielberg's 1985 adaptation received accolades, a film inspired by the similarly lauded stage musical - which originally ran from 2005 to 2008, then again from 2015 to 2017 - is finally hitting theaters this December with an A-list cast for the ages.
On Feb. 3, 2022, during an "ABC News" special, Oprah Winfrey, who starred in Spielberg's film, unveiled the official lineup of lead actors in the forthcoming adaptation: Fantasia Taylor, Halle Bailey, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo. Others who were later announced to join the star-studded cast include H.E.R., Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, Corey Hawkins, David Alan Grier, and newcomer Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, who plays young Celie.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book and the musical adaptation of her 1982 novel.
The film centers on Celie (the younger version is played by Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and the adult version by American Idol alum Fantasia Barrino), a poor Black woman living in the American South of the early 1900s. The first trailer, released in May, showed Celie being separated from her sister Nettie (played by Halle Bailey and Ciara). Over the course of several years, the film explores Celie’s struggles as she yearns to find herself and her own joy.
The new trailer jumps between Celie and Nettie’s childhood together and Celie missing her later as she’s determined to reunite with her.
“I know my sister’s somewhere in the world,” Celie says via voiceover as viewers see an image of the older Nettie played by Ciara.

“The Color Purple” will compete at the Golden Globes in comedy/musical, Gold Derby can exclusively confirm.
Fantasia Barrino, who plays Celie, will be the sole lead acting contender. The film, scheduled to open Christmas Day, also stars Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., H.E.R., Ciara, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and Halle Bailey.
The categorization, of course, is hardly a surprise, since the movie is an adaptation of the hit 2005 Broadway musical, which was based on Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Steven Spielberg‘s 1985 film adaptation. The original musical received 11 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and won Best Actress in a Musical for Lachanze. The 2015 revival won Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Cynthia Erivo, and earned a Best Featured Actress in a Musical bid for Brooks, who reprises her role as Sofia in the upcoming film.

Halle Bailey just released her debut single “Angel,” a song she describes as near and dear to her heart. “With everything I’ve gone through the past 3-4 years, suddenly finding myself in this bubble of all these eyes and new opinions, it was easy for me to feel doubt in myself and who I was. This song for me was my climb out of those feelings, a mantra and promise to myself that the work I’m doing here on earth matters and that I matter,” explained Bailey.
Bailey added: “I wanted to be able to embrace and be proud of myself and who I am naturally through and through. I hope other brown and black girls and everyone in general feel embraced, respected, and inspired hearing the words of this song.”
Grammy winner Theron “NeffU” Feemster produced the song, and Wendy Morgan directed the track’s gorgeous music video.
