The Gotham Awards will be the first awards body on the independent circuit to choose its winners for the year on Monday.
On the film side, two Netflix features lead the tally, both from debut women filmmakers — Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter.” There isn’t always an obvious blueprint to predicting this group. As we saw with last year’s two tied categories, things could get interesting at Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham are just the start of a busy week that has a great influence on the Oscar race. After Monday’s first critics and guild screening of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and Wednesday’s unveiling of Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Thursday brings us the National Board of Review selections before the New York Film Critics Circle weighs in on Friday.

Annapurna Pictures has made several key additions to its film team, including a new executive vice president and head of film in Adam Paulsen.
Paulsen and his colleague Jack Parker are joining the indie prestige shop from Valparaiso Pictures. Parker has been hired as a creative executive. Both will report to Annapurna Chief Creative Officer Sue Naegle and Chief Operating Officer Chris Corabi. They join Annapurna’s director of film development Jess Biddle.
The staffing up signals that Annapurna founder and CEO Megan Ellison is serious about reinvigorating her film division to its former glory. The executive and Oracle heiress herself just returned to Los Angeles from a lengthy quarantine hiatus, as Variety reported in April, and is strategizing anew.

In his new movie “Pig,” Nicolas Cage is on a mission to reclaim something cherished that was taken from him: his prized pet pig that hunts truffles.
“Pig” is a revenge thriller starring Cage and Alex Wolff. Cage plays Rob, a truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness who must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved pig after she’s kidnapped. Early looks at the film have shown Cage bearded, grizzled and bloodied. And the first trailer for the film, released on Thursday, is much darker than you might expect.
Making his directorial debut on “Pig” is Michael Sarnoski, who developed the story with Vanessa Block. Neon will release the film theatrically next month after first teasing footage at last year’s Berlin Film Festival.

I’m sure you all remember who Barney is. As soon as you hear the name, I’m sure that “I love you, you love me” song immediately pops into your head. Well, the big purple dinosaur that a lot of kids grew up with in their lives is getting his very own live-action feature film.
Mattel has announced that a Barney the Dinosaur movie is in the works, and they have partnered up with Daniel Kaluuya and his 59% production banner to help develop the live-action film to audiences around the world. Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films had this to say in a statement:
“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

Daniel Kaluuya is teaming with Mattel Films to produce a new live-action Barney the Dinosaur film.
Barney, the eponymous purple dinosaur of popular 1990s PBS children’s program Barney & Friends, appears to be next in line for a comeback in an era in which comebacks are nigh-obligatory and retro reigns supreme. In this case, the recently-minted toy company studio arm, Mattel Films, is developing a new live-action film project, joined in the endeavor by, intriguingly enough, Oscar-nominated Get Out and Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya. – And no, this won’t be a bizarre, satirically-laced Jordan Peele-directed horror rendition.
It has been announced that the untitled Barney live-action revival movie is in development from producers in the aforementioned Mattel Films along with Kaluuya via his 59% banner, also represented by his partners, Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow. Also onboard to produce are Valparaiso’s David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey.

Part psychological thriller, part horror comedy, “Stranger Things” writer Kate Trefry’s totally clever first film — the short “How to Be Alone,” which just debuted at SXSW in its Midnight Shorts section — takes its eponymous idea and runs with it, straight into some unexpected new avenues.
The film features “It Follows” and “The Guest” star Maika Monroe “as a woman whose deepest fears seem to manifest physically when her husband, played by Joe Keery, leaves for the night shift.” From standard scares like “creepy things in the closet” and “dark corners” to some more, well, specific chills, Trefry’s first film cleverly toes the line between the scary and the silly. Snappily edited, Trefry also knows when to pull back when things are getting too icky (be aware: there’s plenty of fake blood) and lean back into something a touch more humorous.

Sam Bain (“Corporate Animals”) is adapting the script. No director has been set.
Along with McKay and Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions, the film’s producers are Valparaiso Picture’s David Carrico and Adam Paulsen, and Gary Sanchez Productions’ Chris Henchy.
