A new live-action film adaptation of author Tomi Adeyemi’s fantasy novel trilogy “Children of Blood and Bone” will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard”) for Paramount Pictures:
“…’Zélie Adebola’ remembers when the soil of ‘Orïsha’ hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s ‘Reaper’ mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, ‘maji’ were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
“Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good. Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers...

There is movement for Paramount's plan to turn Tomi Adeyemi‘s novel Children Of Blood And Bone into film. According to Deadline, :a[The Old Guard]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-old-guard/' } and :a[The Woman King]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-woman-king/' } director Gina Prince-Bythewood is jumping aboard to direct.
Adeyemi‘s book is set in a fantasy realm where, 11 years ago, Zelie and Tzain lost their mother, and all of Orisha lost magic. The maji were rounded up and slaughtered by King Saran’s orders, and the diviners became second-class citizens, oppressed so they would never rise up again.
But all of that changes when a scroll turns up that has the ability to grant magic to the diviners, changing them into maji. The answer becomes clear to Zelie: they must bring magic back.
For Amari, the princess, the path is less clear. Though...

The novel takes place in a fictional land called Orïsha, where people are divided into two classes: divîners, magically sensitive, white-haired people who can hone their skills to become maji, and kosidán, the nonmagical citizens. Eleven years before the book begins, the king, a kosidán named Saran, discovered a way to turn off magic in the land, then ordered the massacre of the divîners. When HBO’s marketing teams began crafting the influencer marketing campaign for their sci-fi thriller “Lovecraft Country,” they made sure to keep the blerd community in mind.
“It is cool to be a blerd now,” WarnerMedia’s senior VP of multicultural marketing Jackie Gagne tells Variety. “It is a very passionate group and we knew that there would be a lot of love for ‘Lovecraft Country’ and that those would be voices that would really help us drive awareness for the series.”
Over the last few years, the slang term for “Black nerd” has grown in both popular awareness and esteem, with more events and marketing created for and catering to the members of that community.
“We sort of picked up on this when we were first promoting ‘Westworld,’” Gagne says. “We knew the blerd community would really be interested in the subject matter, so we started to form and identify relationships a while ago.

Exclusive: Kay Oyegun, who currently serves as a producer and writer on NBC’s hit drama series, This Is Us, has been tapped to write the screenplay for the film adaptation of On the Come Up, the young adult novel by The Hate U Give author Angie Thomas.
The project, originally set at Fox 2000 who released 2018’s The Hate U Give film starring Amandla Stenberg, moved to Paramount Players earlier this year after the Fox division was shuttered when Disney took over.
Set in the same universe as its predecessor, On the Come Up focuses on Bri, a young rapper and the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died just before making it big. Her father’s legend makes him a hard act to follow, but between Bri being bullied and watching her mother struggle after losing her job, she pours out her frustration into songs that become big viral hits.
The project, originally set at Fox 2000 who released 2018’s The Hate U Give film starring Amandla Stenberg, moved to Paramount Players earlier this year after the Fox division was shuttered when Disney took over.

Netflix continues its push into the African continent — a still relatively untapped source of talent and content — with its latest originals order, which is also its first original African animated series, “Mama K’s Team 4,” produced by Cape Town, South Africa-based Triggerfish Animation Studios and London-based kids’ entertainment house Cake.
Bringing a fresh perspective to a classic cartoon genre, the series tells the story of four teen girls living in a neo-futuristic Lusaka, Zambia, who are recruited by a retired secret agent still committed to saving the world.
The news comes four months after Netflix announced its first African original, “Queen Sono,” starring veteran South African actress Pearl Thusi (“Quantico”) as a secret agent fighting crime while dealing with her messy personal life. It followed that up in February with a series order for the South African teen drama “Blood & Water,” which is directed by Nosipho Dumisa, the helmer behind...

The acclaimed African-inspired fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone, is getting a movie adaptation with Rick Famuyiwa set to direct.
Children of Blood and Bone arrived in 2018 as a refreshing Ya fantasy offering that eschews the genre’s obligatory array of sexy monsters and post-apocalypstic scenarios, centering itself in the arena of African mysticism, focused exclusively on African characters. With the novel’s 25-year-old Nigerian-American author, Tomi Adeyemi, already set to release a sequel novel this December [aggressive glances at George R.R. Martin], the inevitable call from Hollywood has been made, and a film adaptation is coming!
Deadline just reported that the project, which had previously been moving forward as a Fox 2000 property, post-merger is now poised to be spearheaded by Lucasfilm. If there's something all avid readers can agree on, it's that the book is always better than the movie. Don't fight us on this. There are intricacies and internal monologues that can only be conveyed on the written page, and plot points that aren't feasible due to budget, time constraints, or a combination of the two. However, there are those rare anomalies where the adaptation can hold its own, and dare we say it . . . might be better? Don't take it from us, but from the bestselling authors who have been there, done that.
