In 1961, he flew a Schweitzer I-23 H (sail plane) across the United States, making a world record which no one else has ever attempted. He left Puget Sound, Washington on July 30, 1961, and landed 31 flights later in Long Island, New York on Aug. 27, 1961. The flights were all soaring flights and never towed past his last stop.
