Filmmaker Rob Savage says his horror film "Host" only had had a 17-page outline script. "I don't know how much these guys have gone over, but yeah. We had, I think it was a 17-page outline, so every day I'd kind of turn up on Zoom with the actors, and we'd have a short paragraph to describe the scene. The actors and I would basically have to rehearse it and do take after take, and try to find what was working and what wasn't," Savage said.
He added, "We'd kind of shape it over the course of two or three takes, and get it down to what you see in the movie. We shot it chronologically, apart from some of the scare scenes, which we shot earlier on. So, it was really helpful to basically be able to see the movie happening in front of us day by day."

If you’re one of the many who contributed to Host‘s perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, you’ll be pleased (terrified?) to hear that the crew behind the pandemic horror smash are releasing a real-time, live-action horror gamed called Ghosts.
Although Host director Rob Savage is not involved, the game was written and directed by one of the film’s writers, Jed Shepard, and stars Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, and Caroline Ward. The actresses appeared in a new teaser for the game, which also...

Well, well, well… I guess we knew it was only a matter of time before we started to get a plethora of lockdown movies coming out the woodwork and it would seem that horror based streaming platform Shudder are going to be the first to dip their toe into, what I assume, to soon be very crowded waters… I can’t say these are times I have been looking forward to knowing how fairly uncreative things can get when we are essentially just following a trend but like any reviewer or just all round movie lover It is my duty to at least watch the movies and give them a fair shot.

When lockdown began, British director Rob Savage intended to make the best of his isolation — digging out classics by the likes of Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, and all the rest. Ten minutes into the latter’s 1972 epic Solaris, though, Savage gave up and turned on Halloween 4.
“I wanted something that was a bit removed [from reality],” he tells Rolling Stone. “A fun roller-coaster that you can watch and forget about what’s going on for a bit.”

Video calls have become a daily reality for countless masses in 2020, so it should come as no surprise that the first Zoom horror movie has arrived. What is unexpected, though, is that it's really good. Host was released via Shudder at the end of July, and it's been gaining steady buzz from audiences and critics. Need proof? Look no further than its 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. A perfect score is impressive for movies of any genre - it's even more elusive when it comes to horror movies.
Set in the midst of (and filmed entirely during) the coronavirus pandemic, Host revolves around a group of friends who employ a medium to conduct a seance with them via Zoom. No spoilers here, but things go poorly. A horror movie composed entirely of a Zoom call - literally, it's a grid view - could easily fall into cheesy territory, but with a runtime of 56 minutes,...

As someone who is extremely into online horror and found footage storytelling techniques, Rob Savage’s Host (which premiered this week on Shudder) was totally and completely up my horror-loving alley. With its lean and mean 56-minute running time, Host wastes no time whatsoever unleashing pure terror on both its cast and viewers, and I was wholly riveted and rattled as all hell broke loose on the screen. Make no mistake, Host is the real deal, folks, and co-writer/director Rob Sheridan (along with his entire team of collaborators) have pulled off something very special with their tech-infused nightmare.
Host follows a group of young women –Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova and Caroline Ward (all playing characters that share their own names) – who come together via Zoom during lockdown to hold a séance with the assistance of a medium named Seylan (Seylan Baxter). Their friend Alan...

Time moves differently during lockdown. But that’s actually worked to the advantage of director Rob Savage who has managed to create an incredibly timely, sincerely scary and wonderfully shot horror movie in 12 weeks. That’s 12 weeks from conception to its appearance on streaming service Shudder.
The result is Host, a horror set over a Zoom call that couldn’t be more relevant and more zeitgeisty, which will likely secure a place in horror history as a movie that captured a moment which, with any luck, will look like a bizarre blip. Though Host certainly leans into horror movie tropes that existed before it – you can see shades of The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity and Unfriended here – Host is put together with such ingenuity, particularly given the whole lockdown situation, that it’s difficult not to be somewhat in awe of what Savage and his extraordinary cast and crew have achieved.

"Evil will find you... even when you stay home." You've heard about it, but have you seen it yet? Shudder has debuted an official trailer for the crazy new indie horror film Host, the latest feature from acclaimed UK horror filmmaker Rob Savage. We've featured a number of his shorts, including Salt and the creepy attic Zoom short from earlier this year. Savage followed that up with an even more ambitious idea - a 50-minute feature made entirely over Zoom. Starring Haley Bishop, Radina Drandova, Edward Linard, Jemma Moore, Caroline Ward, and Emma Louise Webb, who also operated their own cameras, helped pull off their own practical effects, and lit their own scenes. Due to social distancing precautions, Savage never set foot in the same room as his actors at any point during production and instead directed them remotely. This has been receiving rave reviews all week and is available on Shudder now.
