Son of Sir John Evans (1823-1908) archaeologist and numismatist, he was
keeper of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford (1884-1909) and professor of archaeology. He is most famous for his researches on the Minoan civilization. He was a founder of the British School at Athens in 1886 and knighted in 1911.
