Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin credits the franchise’s brain trust of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell for the resounding success of his latest film. The Irish filmmaker recognized that the franchise needed to take another left turn, similar to what Raimi did with the more heightened and fantastical third chapter, Army of Darkness (1992). So instead of another cabin-in-the-woods story, Cronin took Rise to a condemned Los Angeles apartment building, as an artistic single-parent family has to now deal with the Book of the Dead’s wrath.
Raimi and Campbell quickly blessed Cronin’s manner of subversion, and what resulted was the highest-grossing Evil Dead film to date, totaling $146 million on a $19 million spend.
“They gave me the freedom to go and perform, because they’ve been through the ringer over the years,” Cronin tells The Hollywood Reporter. “They started out in the most independent way possible, and they...

Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here), a movie that was once intended to go straight to the HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming service, reached theatres on April 21st, and it looks like it’s going to be receiving a digital release on May 9th. (That’s what Microsoft is promising.) Before we reach that date, the official Evil Dead Twitter account has sent out a tweet celebrating the fact that Evil Dead Rise has now earned over $100 million at the global box office!
That’s a great accomplishment for a movie that cost under $20 million, and it reached that number in just three weeks. The previous Evil Dead movie, released in 2013, didn’t reach $100 million during its theatrical run, falling just short at $99,010,045.

In just three weeks of theatrical release, Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here), a movie that was once intended to go straight to the HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming service, has racked up almost $100 million at the worldwide box office. To celebrate his film’s success, writer/director Lee Cronin has taken to social media to share a look at some Evil Dead Rise concept art. You can take a look at the artwork at the bottom of this article.
Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi handpicked Cronin to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie after seeing his feature directorial debut The Hole in the Ground. The story Cronin crafted for Evil Dead Rise has the following synopsis: A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment.

The following contains major spoilers for Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise (2023).
Of the many horror franchises, few are as creatively violent as The Evil Dead. Sam Raimi’s 1981 original garnered an Nc-17 rating for “substantial horror violence and gore” and Stephen King described the low-budget indie as “the most ferociously original horror film of the year.” The film follows Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), his sister, and three friends as they travel to a cabin in the remote woods and accidentally summon demons with an incantation from the Book of the Dead.
In 2013, Fede Alvarez directed the fourth franchise installation, Evil Dead, a remake/sequel following Mia (Jane Levy), her brother, and three friends in a similarly doomed cabin. Ten years later, the Deadites have returned to the big screen with Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise which tells a stand-alone story about a similar Book of the Dead. Found...

No one in the Evil Dead universe keeps plans like Jessica.
You know, Jessica: the sun hat-clad bookend to Lee Cronin’s splatter-ific “Evil Dead Rise,” played by Anna-Maree Thomas. The character appears possessed in the film’s prologue, kicking off the vicious city-slicking sequel as its first Deadite with a gruesome scalping and decapitation scene set at a remote lake cabin.
“That was key thing from the get-go because I had this idea that I wanted to bring you to a familiar place, but also kind of tease you and show you that I’d subvert your expectations,” Cronin told IndieWire of the film’s opening vignette in a spoiler-heavy conversation via Zoom. “Then we set it in the city, so once I’d made that up I was like, ‘Well, I need a reason to do [the cabin scenes]. I need to be motivated somehow.’ And that’s what gave me the idea.

Ten years ago, the characters in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead were cleverly given first names that allowed the first letters of each of their names to spell out Demon – David, Eric, Mia, Olivia, Natalie – and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise has similarly hidden some Easter Eggs within the characters’ names. Every character in the new movie is named after a past Evil Dead star!
Here’s the full main character roster, and the stars their names pay tribute to…
Actor/Character: Lily Sullivan – Beth
Named After: Embeth Davidtz, Army of Darkness
Actor/Character: Alyssa Sutherland – Ellie

Contains spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise"
The "Evil Dead" franchise is amorphous. Sam Raimi's original "The Evil Dead" was a touchstone genre masterpiece, though its follow-up, "Evil Dead II," is still hotly debated. Is it a remake or a sequel? There are the bonkers yet sensational "Army of Darkness," a television series (gone too soon), and Fede Álvarez's slick 2013 remake. Now, there's Lee Cronin's "Evil Dead Rise," which shifts the action from the woods to a Loa Angeles apartment building. No two "Evil Dead" movies are alike. Each is a gruesome springboard for new filmmakers to try their hand at Deadite mayhem.
They are some of the greatest scary movies ever made and arguably the most consistent franchise in horror history. Unlike several other recent remakes (including David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy or the two new "Scream" entries), "Evil Dead" isn't bound to a strict chronology.

When 2013's "Evil Dead" debuted, critics and horror fans weren't on the same page of "The Necronomicon." Some revolted against its addiction recovery storyline, offended that Fede Alvarez's film remade the zany Bruce Campbell-starring horror comedy franchise into something grisly and somber. Others thought the film's dark themes and its fresh blood unlocked a thrilling new dimension for the Deadites (and viewers) to explore. Of course, these opposing views revived the debate that has always haunted the franchise: What counts as an Evil Dead movie?
However, most failed to realize Alvarez wasn't rewriting anything within the world of Sam Raimi's demons. Given the era his film came out, when the aughts flooded the horror scene with remake after remake, it's understandable why many assumed "Evil Dead" fell into this bloated category. However, In 2018, Alvarez confirmed his film is a sequel,...

Sometimes, dead is better, especially at the box office. The latest chapter of the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, rose to $2.5M in Thursday preview screenings at the domestic box office. While it’s a groovy start for a horror film, it’s important to remember the weekend is just beginning, and theatergoers love a good scare. Friday crowds will likely fill seats for the Lee Cronin-directed horror film, with young adults and mature audiences making up most of the ticket sales.
As promising as Evil Dead Rise looks, The Super Mario Bros. Movie could level up again at the box office with $45 million to $50 million in its third weekend. The Super-Mushroom-powered animated film has already made $724 million worldwide and is well on its way to making $1 billion in gold coins. In addition to making money at the box office, Illumination’s Super Mario movie has a knock-on effect regarding video game sales.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise."As much as we humans love to champion our capacity for free will, life is inevitably made up of events that occur without our intent, and beyond our control. We can all attempt to make a plan for how our lives will go, but in the end, living is as much reacting as it is acting.
These seismic events that change the course of one's life don't necessarily have to be traumatic. For those in the "Evil Dead" universe, however, trauma is an unfortunately perennial thing. The latest installment of the franchise, "Evil Dead Rise," sees writer/director Lee Cronin soft-reboot the series yet again after 2013's "Evil Dead" and the 2015-18 TV series "Ash vs Evil Dead." This too is par for the course: one could argue that, despite numerous bits of connective tissue, every "Evil Dead" film contains a little continuity rebooting.

Chicago – Watching “Evil Dead Rise,” i was reminded of Roger Ebert’s one and only review of “Friday the 13th Part 2.” In that review Ebert found little to stir him on the screen and instead lamented the audience that would willingly go to see the latest in a string of dead teenager movies.
I’m reminded that my parents took me to the original “Evil Dead” at the tender young age of seven, so i was used to gore, but this claustrophobic exercise offered nothing to grab onto or to entertain.
Rating: 0.5/5.0
After a brief prologue at a rural cabin by the lake, we flash back to a decrepit Los Angeles apartment building. Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) is a single mom of three kids who finds her estranged sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) showing up on her doorstep. She sends her kids out to pick up pizza while the two sisters get caught up.

Evil Dead is a rarity. It’s one of the very few franchise frights that is routinely good. From the very first film way back in 1981 to the bloody good sequels and spin offs. And even an impressive remake/reboot courtesy of Fede Alvarez. That brings us to the latest in the series, Evil Dead Rise. While the most recent entry into the world of Deadites has nothing to do with Bruce Campbell’s Ash, it manages to be incredibly creepy, intense, and very gruesome. Directed by Lee Cronin, the new flick stars Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas, Lily Sullivan, and Alyssa Sutherland.
Recently, we sat down with Mr. Cronin, as well as the film’s stars, Sutherland and Sullivan. First up, we spoke with Lee about his take on Evil Dead, and bringing the red stuff. And yes, there is a lot of it. The filmmaker opened up about his vision,...

‘Evil Dead Rise’ Review: Deadites Cause High-Rise Havoc In Lee Cronin’s Latest Horror Venture – SXSW
Deadites are everywhere in Lee Cronin’s newest film Evil Dead Rise. Taking place in cosmopolitan Los Angeles, these wacky demons still cause high-rise havoc in the modern era. Also written by Cronin, a true fan of the franchise, the movie stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lilly Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Gabriele Echols and Nell Fisher. It is interesting seeing these stories shift from a male to female perspective, showing that women can also be heroes of the supernatural as well.
