Updated, 12:30 Pm: Donald Trump wrapped up his testimony in his New York civil fraud trial after a contentious day that, absent camera coverage, played into his campaign message that he’s the one under attack.
“In one respect, Trump’s strategy is successful,” Neal Katyal, the legal commentator and former acting solicitor general, wrote on X/Twitter. “Everyone is talking about his temper tantrums, instead of talking about his commissions of fraud and that he is a cheat. He’s already lost the merits of the case, so this is his best play.”
Trump has denied allegations that he fraudulently inflated the value of his assets for the purposes of securing more favorable loan terms.
But throughout the day, Trump went on several rants against the prosecution and the judge, calling the whole trial “fraudulent.”
In his afternoon testimony, Trump insisted that he was “worth billions of dollars more than the financial statements,...

Paula Reid, has been named CNN’s chief legal affairs correspondent, a vote of confidence in the reporter who joined the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet in 2021.
Reid has been highly visible on CNN in recent months, covering federal and state investigations into former President Trump as well as a Special Counsel probe into President Biden’s handling of classified documents during his time as vice president. Reid was part of a team that broke the news that Trump had been captured on audio tape discussing a classified document he kept after leaving the White House. Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial started Monday in New York, with the former president trying to fill the void left by a prohibition on cameras in the proceedings.
Before heading into the court this morning, he spoke to the media outside the courtroom, attacking New York state Attorney General Letitia James and bashing the judge, Arthur Engoron. After a lunchtime break, Trump gave another angry statement just after he exited. And he did so again while heading back in. “I want to watch this witch hunt myself,” he said.
Fox News carried portions of his remarks live, while CNN and MSNBC used them sparingly, often with correspondents talking over visuals of Trump speaking to reporters. CNN did do a fact check, while MSNBC ran a box in the bottom right-hand screen of the courtroom door.
The coverage gave a glimpse of how the networks might treat Trump’s criminal trials,...

Congressman Matt Gaetz tried his hand at a brand of comedy that doesn’t go over well with most audiences in 2023 but is apparently fine on Fox News, pointing out Chris Christie’s weight to the delight of the in-studio audience.
Gaetz, the U.S. representative for Florida who was previously under investigation by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking and obstruction of justice, shot back at criticism Christie leveled at the House Judiciary Committee for which Gaetz is a part of as he appeared on “Hannity.”
“I’m more likely to take Chris Christie’s exercise plan than his fundraising strategy,” Gaetz quipped to the delight of a laughing studio audience.

Right up until the day Donald Trump’s federal indictment was unsealed, the legal team tasked with defending him was engaged in petty internal feuds — including fights over TV appearances, accusations of disloyalty, and even a so-called “coup,” three people familiar with the situation, as well as others on or close to Trump’s legal defense, tell Rolling Stone.
The clashes were dramatic enough that Friday, hours before Trump’s federal indictment in the Mar-a-Lago documents probe was unsealed, top lawyers John Rowley and Jim Trusty abruptly resigned. The resignations...

Paula Reid, a CBS News White House correspondent who gained broader traction covering the Trump administration, is moving to CNN, where she will work as senior legal affairs correspondent.
She is expected to work on all major legal stories and work closely with other members of CNN’s justice team, according to a spokesperson for the WarnerMedia-owned cable-news outlet. Reid, who earned a law degree from Villanova University and passed the bar exam in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, will be based in Washington, D.C.
Speculation about Reid’s position at CBS News ramped up earlier this year after the network took her off the White House beat under a reorganization of its Washington bureau, but didn’t assign her a defined new role. She was offered a beat covering Congress, according to a person familiar with the matter, but declined in order to pursue outside opportunities.

Paula Reid has, for the moment, moved from the White House to her house.
The CBS News White House correspondent is still working her job full-time. But for the last few days, she hasn’t been doing it at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
“I’m still making calls all day long, talking to sources, but sometimes, I’m doing it in my pajamas,” says Reid, who has been with CBS News for a decade.
Reid is quarantining for two weeks after sitting in the front row during a recent White House press briefing with Kayleigh McEnany, the White House Press Secretary who recently disclosed she had tested positive for coronavirus – part of a string of officials at the White House who have also done so, including President Trump. “She was not wearing a mask. She also brought three young press assistants who sat very close to me,” says Reid. “None of them were wearing a mask.

Trump was talking to reporters and supporters in the ballroom of the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey when he touched on the US coronavirus response.
He was challenged by CBS News journalist Paula Reid when he repeated his claim that his administration signed into law the measure expanding health care options for eligible veterans. The law was passed in 2014.

Vice President Mike Pence put a rosier picture on the U.S. response to the coronavirus than that of a number of health officials, saying that states are “opening up safely and responsibly,” even as health officials reported a single-day record of 39,327 new infections on Thursday.
Pence made the remarks as the White House coronavirus task force held its first briefing in two months, an acknowledgement of the alarming rise in new outbreaks in a number of states, including Texas and Florida.
He insisted that the shutdowns of the economy and social distancing measures, followed by states gradually reopening public places, had worked.
“We slowed the spread, we flattened the curve, we saved lives,” he said. But the renewed concern in some states was apparent as Florida, which reported nearly 9,000 positive cases on Thursday, and Texas, which also has seen a spike, placed new restrictions on bars.

Over the course of his presidency, President Donald Trump has hurled invective at any number of TV journalists, whether it be Don Lemon, Arthel Neville, Neil Cavuto, Nicolle Wallace, Brian Williams, Chris Cuomo, Leland Vittert, Peter Alexander, Yamiche Alcindor, Weija Jiang, Jon Karl or Paula Reid. But he seems to launch his worst material at Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.
Trump’s continued efforts to stir up debunked conspiracy theories about a former staffer in Scarborough’s Florida congressional office represent just his latest attempt to smear the news hosts. In 2018, some people may recall – it’s hard to do given the sheer volume of White House name-calling – Trump prompted shock when he made remarks about Brzezinski’s appearance. “Crazy Mika” and “Psycho Joe” are phrases he has tried to make common, even though the hosts have with Willie Geist maintained one of the longest-running anchor teams on a national morning-news program?...

President Donald Trump had a lengthy Q&a with reporters at the White House on Tuesday, but he was irritated by one journalist, CBS News’ Paula Reid, for her query or the way it was asked.
Reid asked: “Mr. President, why haven’t you announced a plan to get 36 million unemployed Americans back to work? You are overseeing historic economic despair. What is the delay? Where is the plan?”
Trump responded, “Oh, I think we have announced a plan. We are opening up our country — just a rude person, you are. We are opening up our country, and we’re opening it up very fast. The plan is each state is opening and it is opening up very effectively, and when you see the numbers I think even you will be impressed, which is pretty hard to impress you.”

President Donald Trump complained about the way that two CBS News correspondents asked questions during the nightly coronavirus press briefings, telling the New York Post, “It wasn’t Donna Reed, I can tell you that.”
The correspondents — Paula Reid and Weijia Jiang — were targets of the president at various points during the briefings, which the White House recently scaled back.
In the interview, Trump said, “Paula Reid, she’s sitting there and I say, ‘How angry. I mean, What’s the purpose?’ They’re not even tough questions, but you see the attitude of these people, it’s like incredible.”

CNN and MSNBC cut away from Donald Trump’s coronavirus press briefing on Monday, with anchors protesting that the White House was using the time to air a campaign-style “propaganda” video to defend and praise the president’s response to the crisis.
“We are going to avoid airing any more of this White House briefing until it returns to what it was supposed to be, which was the Coronavirus Task Force briefing providing medical information,” said Ari Melber on MSNBC, who called the video “some kind of backward looking edited video propaganda.”

The White House Correspondents’ Association voted to remove conservative outlet One America News Network from the pool rotation at President Donald Trump’s coronavirus briefings, after its correspondent violated social distancing guidelines.
In a letter to members, the Whca board wrote that they voted to remove the outlet, known for its pro-Trump coverage. They cited a policy, put in place because of concerns over the spread of the coronavirus, that limits the briefing room to just 14 seated correspondents. No reporters are allowed to stand on the sidelines, as they routinely did in the past.

President Donald Trump again attacked the media at his latest coronavirus press briefing, but the trigger was a question about a tweet he sent earlier on Wednesday afternoon, claiming that the media wants the economy to falter to hurt his chances at reelection.
Trump tweeted, “The LameStream Media is the dominant force in trying to get me to keep our Country closed as long as possible in the hope that it will be detrimental to my election success. The real people want to get back to work Asap. We will be stronger than ever before!”

Updated with schedules for Week 2 hearings: The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will continue public hearings in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump for a second week beginning Tuesday. Last week’s three witnesses marked the first such hearings to take place since President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and only the fourth time against a sitting president in U.S. history.
The House of Representatives is probing charges that Trump attempted to coerce Ukraine, a foreign government, to launch an investigation of political rival Joe Biden and his son. The hearings could wrap before the end of the year.
Like last week, cable networks are planning full-court coverage for scheduled hearings this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (see the breakdown below). Most broadcast networks plan to break in to regularly scheduled programming, while offering uninterrupted coverage via their digital outlets.
Deadline will also live-stream all the hearings this week.

From firing FBI Director James Comey to his endless attempts to undermine federal law enforcement on Twitter, President Trump has obstructed justice in plan sight for most of his time in office. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s also been doing this behavior behind the scenes. On Tuesday afternoon, the New York Times published an extensive report detailing the “intimidation, pressure and humiliation” the president has exerted in an effort to stymie the multiple investigations into his campaign and businesses. The report contains a number of damning allegations,...

There are many Bryan Stevenson quotes to live by, but there is one that I keep at my desk. The civil rights attorney who founded the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, published a book in 2014 called Just Mercy. The quote reminds me not merely of the people I often write about, but it helps me maintain a degree of faith that humanity can,...
