If you want evidence that Dazn is a disruptor, you need only look at two big plays it has made in recent months. In March, the global sports streaming platform unseated Comcast-owned Sky as the home of Serie A soccer in Italy. A couple of months later, Dazn repeated the trick, outpunching Sky again to land a “game-changing” five-year pact with Eddie Hearn’s boxing juggernaut Matchroom for “at least” 16 fights a year in the UK and Ireland.
They are deals ripped straight from the Sky playbook, given the pay-tv operator used major events like the Premier League as a battering ram to establish itself as a market leader. Then owned by Rupert Murdoch, Sky was itself a disruptor. Dazn’s Serie A and Matchroom agreements also highlight shifting sands in an industry that is rapidly lurching towards streaming. The WWE, whose lucrative live events business was neutralized for more than a year by the coronavirus pandemic, has set a 25-city schedule as it gets set to resume touring on July 16.
Texas, which has been one of the most aggressive states in loosening Covid-19 safety restrictions, will be the first state to host wrestling events. SmackDown will be held in Houston on July 16, followed by Money In The Bank in Fort Worth on July 18 and Monday Night Raw on July 19 in Dallas.
Additional tour stops and on-sale dates will be revealed in the coming weeks, the company said.
The official announcement of the tour plans did not mention any specifics in terms of Covid safety protocols. The Texas Rangers have drawn capacity crowds at their stadium in Arlington, which seats more than 38,000. A boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders attracted 73,000 fans. Mask recommendations and other measures have been put in place,...

Global streaming sports platform Dazn and Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo have closed a multi-project development deal kicking off with “El Presidente,” a docu-series chronicling the former striker’s tenure as part owner of Spanish club Valladolid Fc, which will launch globally on May 20.
Best known for its live sports streams and the headaches it initially caused pay TV broadcasters when it crashed in on the scene in 2015, Dazn is now establishing itself as a platform for high-end sports-based entertainment programming and a service worth keeping during the off-season.
“What this shows you is a commitment to going beyond live sports and making Dazn a designer destination that keeps fans coming back,” senior VP of creative studios and publishing Hugh Sleight explained to Variety in an exclusive interview accompanying Wednesday’s announcement.
Produced by Zoom Sport and Dazn, “El Presidente” is the first of three series the streamer will commission featuring Ronaldo.
