Welcome to Streamers on the Rise, where we find streamers who are growing their channels, content, and audiences in extraordinary ways. Each week we’ll talk with a creator about what goes into livestreaming–both on and off camera.
Frogan had to quit streaming.
She was on the cusp of getting her master’s degree in public health, and her thesis was looming.
“[M]y advisor was basically like, ‘If you don’t give me a draft by next week, you’re not graduating on time,'” she tells Tubefilter. So, “I quit streaming. I was like, ‘I’m just going to focus on my thesis so I can graduate.'”
Frogan wasn’t a full-time streamer at that point, but it was something she enjoyed. She’d grown up a self-described “girlypop” gamer, who played things like Nintendogs and Animal Crossing. As she got older and continued to game, she...

Principal photography has begun on “The Captive,” a historical epic from “The Others’” Alejandro Amenábar, starring Julio Peña (“Berlin”) as “Don Quixote” author Miguel de Cervantes, a prisoner of Ottoman corsairs, seen in a very first still from the film, alongside Alessandro Borghi (“Suburra”), playing his captor, which has been shared in exclusivity with Variety.
Paris and London-based production, finance and sales house Film Constellation handles worldwide sales. Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture is on board to release the film in Spain in 2025.

Almost ten years after the incident, Tarek Albaba's “36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime” unearths a fatal night on February 2015 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 36 seconds, the lives of three Muslim American students – newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat and Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, and Yusor's sister Razan – were swiftly taken by their neighbor, allegedly because of a parking dispute. Peppered with interviews with the heartbroken family, various recreations, and even a Hasan Minhaj cameo, the documentary insists that the incident was a hate crime, not a simple squabble over a parking space.
We had the privilege to speak with Tarek Albaba over Zoom on the occasion of CAAMFest 2024. Albaba has worked in the industry for over 20 years, but this film marks his directorial debut. As we navigated his first feature, we discussed the delicate balance between memorializing the victims, maintaining a call-to-action, and Palestinian solidarity in these fraught times.

Hasan Minhaj turned a career downturn into a comic bit last night a the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles, saying that his lost opportunity to host The Daily Show actually saved the long-running institution.
“We’ve all failed in our lives,” Minhaj said, “but have you ever failed so bad, you bring back Jon Stewart?” I saved a dying institution. You’re welcome.”
The reference came during a joking exchange between Minhaj, who was serving as emcee of a festival showcase, and current Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng, who had just taken the stage.
“I’m surprised that Hasan’s able to do this show,” Chieng cracked, according to Deadline’s sister publication Variety. “I guess canceling is not what it used to be.”

“I’ve lost track of all time, hours, days,” says Mehdi Hasan, explaining it has been “a manic six weeks.”
The former MSNBC host launched his own media company, Zeteo, on April 15, and things are hectic — in a good way. After Hasan raised $4 million in seed money, Zeteo generated more than 20,000 paid subscribers in its first two weeks. While a standard subscription costs $8 per month, or $72 per year, many subscribers have paid a whole lot more.
“I’m not going to tell you how many founding members we have, who paid $500,” Hasan says,...

Hasan Minhaj joked about losing the opportunity to host The Daily Show following a scandal involving fabricated stand-up stories Thursday at an appearance at the Netflix Is a Joke festival.
According to Variety, Minhaj served as the emcee of one of the fest’s stand-up showcases, with current Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng also on the bill. Hasan Minhaj is ready to laugh about it all.
At the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival on Thursday, Minhaj hosted a showcase highlighting various comedians. At the end of the lineup was Ronny Chieng, who joked, “I’m surprised that Hasan’s able to do this show. I guess ‘cancelling’ is not what it used to be.”
He was referring to a controversy sparked by a September story in the New Yorker that aimed to fact-check Minhaj’s stand-up comedy. The month before, Variety had exclusively reported that he was the frontrunner to replace Trevor Noah as host of “The Daily Show,” but he lost the job after the scandal arose. Instead, famed host Jon Stewart returned for Monday night episodes, while other correspondents anchor for the rest of the week.
On Thursday, Minhaj pretended to heckle Chieng from the crowd, calling out, “You planted that story about me!

Washington — “You look beautiful in your blood-stained gown,” a protester shouted at a finely dressed woman, opulent in heels and done up to perfection as she made her way to the Washington Hilton, the site of this year’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, April 27.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is Washington, D.C.’s hallmark event — a night where top Beltway journalists mingle with politicians and White House staff, and the president makes jokes. This year’s event was the target of a protest aimed at...

Rachel Maddow has landed a big scoop: E. Jean Carroll, who just won an $83.3 million judgment against former president Donald Trump for defamation, will join Maddow for her first TV interview since the trial ended.
Carroll will appear on Monday’s edition of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show (9/8c), the network announced on Friday. Earlier on Friday, a Manhattan federal jury found that Trump should pay Carroll $83.3 million in damages for disparaging her and denying her allegations of rape. The total includes $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. Last year, a separate jury found that Trump...

Stand-up comedian Hasan Minhaj was close to being the new host for “The Daily Show” if only his scandal didn’t reemerge.
After it’s announced that Jon Stewart will make a surprising return to the talk show, a new report suggested that Minhaj lost out on the hosting gig due to a controversy, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Citing multiple sources, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Minhaj’s deal to take over as Trevor Noah’s replacement was all but done by late summer.
Around the same time, The New Yorker published a damning article claiming that the show’s former correspondent fabricated autobiographical details of his comedy.
In 2022, in a stand up Minhaj claimed that he once opened a letter filled with white powder that fell on his daughter. Fearing that it was anthrax, he and his wife Beena Patel took their daughter to the hospital before they learned hours...

Medhi Hasan is exiting MSNBC. The anchor, whose final show on the news cabler aired on Sunday, announced his exit at the end of the telecast. The news came after MSNBC late last year that it had canceled the outspoken Hasan’s show.
“Some personal news: I’ve decided to leave Msbnc. New year, new plans, new challenges,” he wrote on the X/Twitter platform.
“It’s been an absolute blast doing this live show on MSNBC for the past three years,” Hasan said. “But as we begin 2024 with an election coming, a war still ongoing and too many Trump trials honestly to even keep track of, and with this show going away, I’ve decided it’s time for me to look for a new challenge. Tonight is not just my final episode of ‘The Mehdi Hasan Show.’ It’s my last day with MSNBC. Yes, I’ve decided to leave.

The rise of quality in the entries of this list becomes evident every year, with movies from countries such as Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan finding a number of way outs through festivals and streamers, winning awards all over. Of course, Iran still heads the region, as its biggest movie industry, but the biggest surprise this year came from Sri Lanka, which produced three films of true quality.
Without further ado, here are the best West-Central Asian (rest of Asia one could say) films of 2023, in random order. Some films may have premiered in 2022, but since they mostly circulated in 2023, we decided to include them.
