The failure of 2.0 and Will's resignation left huge problems for Gaffney, and it was anyone's guess where the hospital would go from there.
But Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 1 jumped ahead a few months when things had settled down, the hospital had been sold, and a new doctor was ready for his first day on the job.
It was a creative choice that paid off. By throwing the characters into a new crisis, we learn what life at Gaffney is like now and determine whether Dr. Ripley is made of strong stuff.
The hospital seemed to be running smoothly. Jack Dayton and most of his technology were gone, and Maggie was back to running the Ed floor during a crisis. It felt like the Med viewers have known and loved for eight years!

It’s been a long wait for NBC’s Chicago Med to return with its 9th Season but with the premiere less than a week away (January 17), Deadline has some juicy nuggets to tease about the show’s return.
In the Season 8 finale, the medical drama said goodbye to Day 1-er Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) who handed in his resignation after finding himself more and more unsettled with the new changes implemented at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center following Jack Dayton’s purchase of the hospital. His main concern was Dayton’s insistence on using the O.R. 2.0. even after a machine error caused the death of a patient and could’ve also claimed Dayton’s life.
Dayton’s live surgery for investors cost him nearly all his money after showing the high-tech machine wasn’t ready for showtime. So to stay afloat financially, Dayton sells the hospital.

Will may be gone, but Chicago Med's still going strong!
Fans gasped when Will resigned after sabotaging Or 2.0 and moved to Seattle, where he met Natalie and a still-adorable Owen at the airport. Nick Gehlfuss' surprise exit after eight years turned our expectations upside down; where does Med go from here?
There's still plenty of life left in Med, even without one of its leads, and we have details about Chicago Med Season 9! Be sure to bookmark this page and check back often, as we will update as we get more information.

It might take me all summer to come to terms with this one.
Will Halstead has always been the heart of Chicago Med. Other characters have come and gone, but he was the one constant we could count on.
This isn't the end of the series, but Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 22 certainly felt like the end of an era when Will walked out those doors for the final time -- and ended up in Seattle with Natalie.
Will's last act was to work with Grace to screw up Or 2.0 completely. I'm unhappy about that, though I'm even less pleased to lose Will.
Marcel was right that the tech had been helpful in many ways and that eradicating its credibility wasn't the way to go. Marcel was the one person Jack trusted -- he could have gotten Jack to sideline the project after the IPO and put Grace to work on fixing the glitches.

[This story contains spoilers for “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?,” the season eight finale of Chicago Med.]
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has been chafing under newly profit-centered management of the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center since Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) took control of the hospital. The season eight finale of Chicago Med brought his frustration to a head, when Dayton insisted on going through with a surgery assisted by his Or 2.0 system, under protest by Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains).
The routine hernia surgery goes fine — no thanks to 2.0, which shows a complication that’s not there. Halstead admits to Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he manipulated 2.0 to produce a bad result — and protects Dr. Song (T.V. Carpio), who hacked the system — and hands in his resignation letter. “What are we going to do without you?” Goodwin asks him.
The law of unintended consequences, however, might catch up to the rest of the staff at Med: Dayton tells Goodwin that the botched public demonstration of 2.0 has wrecked him financially,...

Things aren't quite what they seem with Jack Dayton -- or are they?
On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 21, Marcel learned that Jack had deleted data from Or 2.0.
Many viewers assumed from Chicago Med Season.8 Episode 21 spoilers that Jack did it to cover up that he sabotaged 2.0 during Richard's procedure. That still might be true, but it doesn't look like it right now.
Jack claimed that he deleted the data to protect Marcel's reputation, but Marcel and Will soon realized a more selfish motive: Jack didn't want anything to interfere with his IPO launch for 2.0.
The discrepancy Grace found could tank the launch altogether -- If 2.0 is really to blame. Did anyone else think that Jack manipulated the data, adding a fake scan after the fact to make it appear Marcel made an error?

Are Jack Dayton's days finally numbered?
Nobody was happy when Dayton managed to get the votes to convert Gaffney into a for-profit hospital, and everyone rebelled against the new rules.
And now, on Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 21, Marcel actively investigates whether Dayton deliberately sabotaged Or 2.0, leading to a patient's death. Dayton'll fight back, but does he have a chance of winning?
Television hospital staffs don't take kindly to corporate takeovers, especially if the new CEO interferes with patient care.
Dayton escaped the fate of other fictional CEOs for a while by staying out of the doctors' ways. People weren't always happy with him, but they tolerated him as long as he didn't interfere with patient care.

Not only did Archer pull a six-foot tapeworm out of a man, but somehow he could tell the story over lunch without anyone losing their appetite.
As a doctor, Hannah's probably seen a lot, but still. That wasn't appropriate lunch table conversation!
The tapeworm incident was only one of several odd stories on Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 20, but it left an impression!
The visuals of a tapeworm sticking its head out during surgery were shocking and dramatic. But is this how tapeworms are usually diagnosed and treated?
Maybe the budget cuts at the Ed stopped Archer from being thorough in his testing, but I'd think that if a patient came in with weight loss and stomach pain, the hospital would do blood tests and take stool samples as well as order a Ct scan.

Jack Dayton never struck me as a petty Sob, but it appears he is.
After Sharon refused to let his camera crew invade a patient's privacy on Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 17, Dayton barred the doctors from using Or 2.0 on subsidized patients.
I'm not sure how legal it is to do that, but it certainly is obnoxious.
Dayton's love of technology and the hospital's mandates have often been at odds, but not to this degree. Dayton appeared to genuinely care about patients despite his conflict of interest, but was that all an act?
And what does he mean by paying customers? Few people can pay out of pocket for procedures, and hospitals usually won't schedule them until they get pre-authorization. If Dayton plans only to offer 2.0 services to his rich friends who can afford to pay out of pocket, that will blow up badly in his face.

Archer's my least favorite Chicago Med doctor, but does he deserve to be fired?
Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 12 spoilers suggest Jack Dayton wants to!
Archer's sin this time doesn't have to do with overriding patient wishes or dismissing mental health issues. He doesn't want to follow Dayton's plan for implementing AI throughout the hospital.
Archer's never been a fan of AI or similar technology, and he has valid reasons. He doesn't like the idea of doctors being overly dependent on technology that can break down or yield wrong results. And he has observed firsthand that AI can get things wrong.
He's too eager to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and that'll be a problem now that tech guru Jack Dayton is in charge of the hospital. The spoiler video suggests that Dayton fires Archer (or tries to!) after Archer refuses to use Or 2.0 during a procedure.

Jack Dayton's lack of interference with the hospital was too good to be true. He's always had a conflict of interest because he owns AI tech that can be used in medicine.
Or 2.0 is one thing, but now that Asher and Sharon have declared war on Dayton's AI program for flagging opioid abusers, it's on!
On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 11, Asher's attempt to protect a patient falsely flagged as a drug abuser may have set off a larger-scale conflict than she realized. This is going to be great!
Asher's problem was simple, at least on the surface: the AI program flagged a patient as an opiate abuser when she had a rare type of lung cancer that mimicked the signs of opiate abuse. It was logical to conclude that the program was interfering with patient care and needed to go.
Neither Asher nor Sharon cares that they're about to piss Dayton off.

Hospital dramas love the evil corporate takeover trope, but not Chicago Med.
While Gaffney Medical Center may now belong to Jack Dayton, he's not heartless or evil, and so far, he isn't trying to cut costs in ways that destroy the hospital's ability to provide health care.
On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 10, Will was aggravated, and Archer was skeptical, but Dayton came through for a patient who needed him in the end. There's no telling how long it'll be before he does something problematic. Right now, though, this is a nice departure from the usual.
Like most hospital owners, Jack was more absent than anything else (how often was the previous owner at Med?). Archer's skepticism over Dayton's intentions matched my own.
Halstead: A brand new coffee machine?
Archer: Courtesy of our new pal Jack Dayton.
Halstead: I hope this courtesy extends to patient care.
Archer: Don't hold your breath.

It seems to happen to every TV hospital sooner or later.
Some rich person who has no idea how medicine is supposed to work buys a controlling interest in the hospital, leading to chaos and poor patient outcomes.
With Jack Dayton set to take over Gaffney Medical Center, will Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 10 be any different than the stories on The Good Doctor and New Amsterdam involving a corporate takeover?
While the other takeovers came more or less out of nowhere, Chicago Med has carefully laid the groundwork for whatever Jack Dayton is going to do.
Dayton has done favors for the hospital to show his appreciation for Marcel saving his life and that of one of his employees. He financed the Or 2.0. And now he's bought a controlling interest in the hospital.

T.V. Carpio, the actress who has appeared in shows such as Big Sky and The Client List, has joined the NBC medical drama Chicago Med in a recurring role. As reported by Deadline, Carpio will portray Dr. Grace Song, a new doctor hired by Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz), and is set to shake things up when the show returns in 2023. The casting comes following several cast departures, including Brian Tee, Asjha Cooper, Sarah Rafferty, Kristen Hager, and Guy Lockard. Carpio’s Dr. Song is likely to be one of many changes for the popular medical series. This season’s fall finale saw Roiz’s Jack purchase a controlling interest in Gaffney Medical Group, which suggests he will be setting up his own team as he rebuilds the hospital in his image. Chicago Med, created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, launched in 2015 and premiered its eighth season on September 21, 2022. It...

Exclusive: T.V. Carpio (Big Sky) has joined the cast of NBC’s Chicago Med in a recurring role, Deadline hears. She will portray Dr. Grace Song, a new doctor hired by Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) who will shake things up when the show returns in the spring.
Grace’s hiring comes as no surprise following the news that Jack bought controlling interest in Gaffney Medical Group in the fall finale—building up his own team is par for the course. If Sharon Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) reaction to the news of Jack’s come-up is any indication of what’s to come, however, it’s more than likely the addition of Grace won’t be the only change ahead for the hospital.
Carpio’s casting follows multiple cast exits including Brian Tee, Asjha Cooper, Sarah Rafferty, Kristen Hager, and Guy Lockard.
Chicago Med is executive produced by Dick Wolf,...

April and Choi finally got their happy ending.
Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 9 gave us only a glimpse into their wedding, but they were excited to exchange their vows.
It's been a long time coming, and this was the ending that these two characters deserved.
While Chicago Med is a medical drama, I'd hoped we'd get more of the wedding than we did.
At the very least, I'd like to have heard Ethan and April exchange heartfelt, original vows before they exchanged rings and said the traditional words.
View Slideshow: Midseason 2023 TV Schedule:
The episode didn't need more than we got, but it would have been a nice touch, especially since Ethan and April are heading off-screen.
When they were both regulars, their relationship was overly dramatic and didn't seem like a great match. But this time around, things changed.
Or, more specifically, Ethan changed. He was no longer the hardass...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 9, “This Could Be The Start of Something New.”] Chicago Med said goodbye to Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) — and he left as planned! Through April (Yaya DaCosta) admitted to nerves, the couple did get married and will be opening a mobile clinic. But just after they left the church, the others learned entrepreneur Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) bought a controlling interest in Gaffney Medical Group — after unveiling his tech-filled Or 2.0 — and is now in charge. Elsewhere in the fall finale, Dean (Steven Weber) revealed to Hannah (Jessy Schram) he’s dealing with a kidney disorder, interstitial nephritis. Showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider tease what’s ahead. I was very happy to see that the wedding did happen because things can always go wrong. So speak about writing out Ethan as planned and not having something go wrong. Andrew Schneider: From the moment we knew that...
